LET THE WORD GO FORTH FROM THIS TIME AND PLACE, TO FRIEND AND FOE ALIKE, THAT THE TORCH HAS BEEN PASSED TO A NEW GENERATION OF AMERICANS— 1 5 BORN IN THIS CENTURY, TEMPERED BY WAR, DISCIPLINED BY A HARD AND BITTER PEACE, 6 PROUD OF OUR ANCIENT HERITAGE ... John F. Kennedy STUDENT LIFE The 1975-76 school year proved that the students could become a more cohesive body at Atlantic Christian if they tried. Signs of the attempt were flashed from the enthusiasm to decorate the dorms at home- coming, to the tree erected on Hackney at Christmas. A revolt against cafeteria food showed that students wanted action, a sign which could not be ignored. Even though some students worked together, many still tried to brand the college as apathe- tic. Many students found their enjoyment at other places than on campus. Generally weekends were quiet and Atlantic Christian was frozen in motion until stu- dents returned from home or wherever, to rejuvenate and liven a lifeless campus. Another sign of student apathy was revealed in the lack of interest in SGA elections. The SGA had worked all year trying to increase the student’s inter- est in student government and related activities. However, at election time there was only one candidate running in most major offices and the election was somewhat of a joke. Few stu- dents voted and those who did had little choice. Generally student life varied from person to person. Whether life was ideal depended on the individual’s prospective of col- lege life. 8 9 SCHOOL BEGINS ...NEW STUDENTS ARRIVE ... ... As president, Ellen worked for campus unification, and was to a degree successful. The homecoming precedings involved more campus organiza- tions than those of previous years. Many of the organizations had floats in the annual parade, while others helped by decora- ting the center of campus. Even though the organiza- tions varied in their areas of in- terest, each provided an oppor- tunity for students to meet and work together. Along with their participation in homecoming, most of the groups sponsored one or more rewarding activity. These activities included an endless list of fund raising, so- cial and service projects. There were over 20 active or- ganizations at Atlantic Christian in 1976. It became clearly evi- dent that as the year progressed a strong bond existed between club members. 1 I I i 61 j STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION 62 63 MEN’S INTERDORM SPORTS DAY SUCCESS FOR TWO STRAIGHT YEAR! AND THE NATIONAL THEATRE OF THE DEAF 101 SPORTS Interest in the athletic pro- gram at Atlantic Christian in- creased slightly over last year. This increase in interest stemmed mainly from the im- proved performance of several of the teams. In the fall, the soccer team had its most successful year since the team was introduced at the college. The team lost several close games, but most of the team’s players are return- ing next year. ■ The girls also made an impor- tant contribution to the athletic program in 1976. Both the vol- leyball and basketball team grew in popularity. The volleyball games were filled with action, and the basketball team finished the season with a 10-4 record. The Men’s basketball team continued to be inconsistent, however, the freshman mem- bers gained valuable playing time which will strengthen the team next year. In the spring, Coach Thomp- son, District 29 Coach of the Year, led the baseball team to an improved record. Meanwhile, Coach Parham watched his men’s tennis team continue it’s conference and district domi- nance. The golf, track, and women’s tennis team all finished the year with average records. At the spring Athletic Ban- quet, Bill Smiley received the Sportmanship Award, Danny Wilkins was presented with the Edward L. Cloyd Scholarship Award, and Tom Morris was chosen the most valuable ath- lete on campus. COACH SPROLES MOLDS SMALL GROUP INTO COMPETITIVE TEAM 133 INTRAMURALS The Greeks remained an im- portant segment of Atlantic Christian’s student body in 1976. The fraternities and soror- ities once again provided stu- dents with many social activi- ties. The Sigmas sponsored the Mr. Top Hat Dance in the fall. This event’s success encour- aged a later King of Hearts con- test in February sponsored by the DZ’s. Social events were only part of the Greek’s activities. The In- ter-Fraternity Council sponsored the most successful blood drive ever in the college’s history, while the Panhellenic Council kept a nursery for faculty mem- ber’s children during home bas- ketball games. Various charity drives were also sponsored by several of the fraternities and sororities. Always competitive within their own ranks, the Greeks once again displayed some tre- mendous teamwork. For the first time in many years the Greeks did not participate in the home- coming float competition, but they continued the tradition of holding the Greek Sing and Ac- tivity Day. The Sigmas and Sig Eps took Greek Sing honors, while David Wall and Gayle Woodlief were each individual talent winners. The Activity Day champs were the DZ’s and Al- pha Sigs. As last year, rush was very successful and the Greek way of life remained strong for contin- ued activities in 1976-77. 1 1 37 PANHELLENIC COUNCIL Jackie Parker.President Renee Jenkins.Treasurer Nancy Sharp...Secretary Dean Ward.......Advisor JUNIOR PANHELLENIC COUNCIL Phyllis Parish Sheryl Gibbs...... For many, they carry the intangible ability to get along and to com- municate successfully with people. The fact is many stu- dents are not A, B, or even C ac- ademically, but they excell in their ability to meet and under- stand people. An exceptional few students excell in both their studies and ability to associate successfully with others. These students are the leaders of the future. Fortu- nately, in many cases this select group took responsibility for j| planning and supervising many of the campus’ activities during the year. Twenty-three of these students were honored by being selected to Who’s Who in Amer- ican Colleges and Universities in 1976, and many others were awarded at the annual Honors Convocation in the spring. No matter who the student is, he soon finds that his college pals are important. Many times as the year passes these friends become an important part of surviving the college experience. This section is composed of those students and adminis- trators, professors and instruc- tors who made the scene in 1976. For these people this year was like any other at Atlantic Christian. r 163 DAY STUDENTS FIND UNITY Jim Farthing, President ■mr mm y % 164 165 CLASS OF 1979 LaVee Hamer, President Moe Brown, Vice President Debbie McPhail, Secretary .Susan Davis, Treasurer Phyllis Parish, Senator Cynthia Adams, Clayton. For Dr. Hamlin, 1976 marks the last year that he will enter the classroom. At the age of 85, after 52 years of dedicated service, the popu- lar social studies professor has decided to retire. His presence at Atlantic Christian will long be remembered and missed. 222 STAFF DEDICATES HOURS TO PINE KNOT The average student does not realize the work that goes into the culminating of a yearbook. This year’s staff dedicated hours of time to the 1976 publication, and hopes that this Pine Knot will mean as much to the reader as it does to the staff. The 1976 Pine Knot was printed and bound by Herff Jones Yearbooks of Montgom- ery, Ala. Mr. Joe Allegood was the company’s representative. Student portraits were made by Smith Studios of Raleigh, N.C. Mr. Vaughn Gwen was the studio’s photographer. The staff expresses its ex- treme appreciation to the following: Mr. Milton Rogerson, our advi- sor, who gave freely of his time to help the staff by giving sound advice, and providing numerous photographs for the publication. Doug Hackney and Peter Chamness, the staff photogra- phers, who spent many late eve- nings in the darkroom printing pictures. Doug and Peter sup- plied most of the pictures for the Pine Knot. Russell Rawlings for his assis- tance in providing sport group pictures and various sport ac- tion shots. ( i 223 ... MAY WE NOW LOOK TO THE FUTURE AS WE LEARN FROM THE PAST. 224 I
