DEDICATION “I want to teach! Per- haps no one wants this more and yet does it better than Dr. C. H. Hamlin. He is a man who has contributed 50 years to education ... a man who is a recognized humani- tarian ... a man who has forgotten more history than most can ever remember . . . a man who is a man. To many students Dr. Hamlin has been a salva- tion. He has jokingly replied that good grades indicate a good teacher. Former stu- dents have reflected that they can recall more quotes from his classes than any they have experienced. One such proverbial remark heard this year was: The Constitution is a changing organism, not a static ma- chine. We make this dedication simply because Dr. Hamlin deserves it. Any further tri- bute The Pine Knot could offer here would be inade- quate. A COLLEGE PRESIDENT When President Arthur D. Wenger talks to someone he employs a push-button smile, a smile which often means more than what he says. It is a smile which promotes friend- ships and a smile which destroys unsound arguments. College presidents have a most precarious position. Dr. Wenger has said that he must maintain the tension between student demands and administrative restraints. Often both sides appear unreasonable, and a biased approach by a college president would destroy all hope for a liberal arts education. Dr. Wenger's middle course , though often at- tacked, has yielded a promising future for Atlantic Christian College. BOARD OF TRUSTEES George Adorns Wilson Oil Corp. Wilson, N. C. S. M. Sorry about that Chief. Would you believe it? The Home- coming game featured the Varsity five versus our Potted Alumni. (Gas- tronomically speaking.) It was Homecoming and many were home going. Still some stayed seeing scandalous sights sooner scorned than praised. Yes toil and sweat accompanied each folded napkin inserted in the chicken wire of the Homecoming floats which, in themselves, picturesquely proclaimed that AC Was In Orbit. Some malfunction in the solar mood erupted and two floats were extinguished in a fiery holocaust. Who started it? Well, tears flowed, and the blood pressure rose, but no one knows, because they wouldn't pose. Yet a spiritual reaffirmation of faith on the part of many students seemed to be lacking as most awaited the approach of the Holiday recess in grave anticipation of a Cool Yule and a Fiery First. There was a noticeable absence of students from the two worship serv- ices. Both audiences combined would not have filled the Chapel. When asked, What did Santa Claus bring you? one coed curtly replied, A sack of mud. r i Miss Merry Christmas GLENDA ROBERSON The two weeks prior to the Xmas Vaca- tion were not entirely filled with parties. For scores of students the fourteen days served as a teach-in on the power of posi- tive thinking. An attempt was made to reach 3,000 Alumni by long-distance telephone in an effort to raise $20,000.00 for college development. Students and local alumni served as operators while Mr. Hatten Hodges, ACC Alumni Direc- tor, nervously urged them on - symbolic of Norman Vincent Pealed protege - Successful . . . Yes. Wiv. Hackney grabbed an early lead in the race as they took first place in clock golf behind the scoring of Bill Hackett, Arthur Pappas, Phil Ritter, David Hales, and Rex Wheatley. Hackett was the individual winner with a score of 27. Those ever guzzling (oops! hustling) Delta Sigs captured the Flag Football championship in a single elimination tourna- ment after finishing second to Alpha Sig in the regular season play. The Day Students triumph in volleyball was the first indica- tion of a well-balanced program. Their victory increased the total of champions to three. Their victory did not end the bal- ance however, for with the next event a new champion appear- ed. Alpha Sigma Phi's Mickey Winstead lead his team to first place in the Turkey Day race. This event is one of the more interesting of the year as it reveals which of the campus males are just full of hot air. When the annual went to press no other events had been completed. Therefore, as we are neither prophets nor members of the religion department we will not attempt to make any predictions about further events. Front Row: Gary Melville, Mr. Parham, advisor. Second Row: Bill Bererly, Dennis McCotter, Ramon Boykin Third Row: Ronnie Stevenson, Doug Stalls, Terry Jackson WRA The Women's Recreation Association has become one of the more popular extracurricular activities for women (and men) at Atlantic Christian. WRA offers such sports as softball, volley- ball, volley-tennis, basketball, field hockey, tennis, golf, bad- minton, and many others. Participation in WRA is open to all female students of the college. It has become the female coun- ter-part of Men's Intramurals and the activities are just as ex- citing and well played. One of the more obvious results of WRA is the large following it has attratcted from the males at AC. This reason can easily be seen at any event. This year's season began with a picnic which included both food and softball. The first event of the season was softball and the winner was the Independents who were led by Anna Doug- las's superb hitting and pitching. In golf the championship flight was won by Lois Price. The Day Students took the title in Volleyball. As this annual was going to Press basketball was in progress and from all indications its championship looked as if it would be as aggressively pursued as in all the other events that have taken place. Social Life, Service, Scholarship, So- cial Life, Brotherhood, Athletics, Social Life, Rush, Pledge Training, and Social Life all constitute the basis for frater- nities on a college campus. Four such organizations manifest these ideals at Atlantic Christian College. They are Al- pha Sigma Phi, Delta Sigma Phi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Sigma Phi. Serving as the coordinating institu- tion for brotherhood at ACC is the popularly-elected Interfraternity Coun- cil. Officers this year were Don Emery, president; Al Langley, vice president; David Culbreth, treasurer; Marshall Smith, secretary; and Robert J. Washer, advisor. The oldest existing male counterpart to sororities here is Delta Sigma Phi in- stalled on March 16, 1958. Following in order are Sigma Phi Epsilon, Arpil 26, 1958; Alpha Sigma Phi, May, 1958; and Sigma Pi, April 25, 1959. PAN-HELLINIC COUNCIL The Pan-Hellinic Council formulates the laws for sisterhood at Atlantic Christian College. ACC's three sororities, Delta Zeta, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Sigma Tau Chi, elect ten representatives to the Council which in turn elects three officers. Heading the council this year were Martha Sue Mewborn, president; Pam Larmar, secretary; and Linda Driver, treasurer. Competition between Delta Zeta and Tri-Sigma has been keen recently. Delta Zeta became the first national sorority at Atlantic Christian College on October 2, 1965. Yet Tri-Sig was the first national pledge group. Sigma Tau Chi was founded by Rev- erend Joh Barclay in 1925. Two or three apparently succumbed to the pressure and resigned near the end of the first semester. Enter Student Government Association! Crisis after crisis confronted the Executive Board. There was the ever-worsening war in Vietnam, the advent of the Ku Klux Klan as a force in Tarheelia, and the innovation of a popular fad called 7draft- card burning 7 The Executive Board was not without initiative, however, and answered the call to arms most effectively even though some of their attempts were in vain such as the pro- posed 1965 Blotter Act (Ultimately vetoed by that anarchist body known as the Administrative Council). The noble nineteen, hardly disheartened, simultaneously responded with the Student Government Association Amend- ment to the Constitution squelching the name Cooperative Association and harpooning the faculty member and the Dean by obliterating their voting privileges and establishing once and for all campus movies, a radio station, and student government 7 Everything appeared to be going smoothly. Then all at once an omnipresent messianic consciousness permeated the politi- cal scene and the Executive Board threw a party for the Deaf School children. All in all the Executive Board this year has manifested the principles upon which good student government functions. Board members have actively engaged in blistering debates on vital campus issues such as: the possibility that required chapel, the law of the land, criminally violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964; the virtues of affiliation with the blue, white, and Red National Student Association; Collegiate editorials; and even faulty ring-a-dings. The most promising aspect of Intercollegiate Athletics at At- lantic Christian College this year was the school's cheerlead- ers. (An apology is in order here: this article was written follow- ing the basketball game between ACC and ECTC.) But then it is not the fact that you won that counts; it is how you played the game. Bull. Potentially the Bulldogs pos- sessed talents in basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, and track difficult to find on most small college campuses. As a result of publication deadlines comment on ACC sports other than bas- ketball can be nothing but prog- nostication. Now . . . concerning . . . basketball. Some called it the monster of the Black La- goon, others said it was a maca- bre manifestation of Satan, but the Authority labeled it a vicious snake. Whatever it was it pinch- ed, gnawed, and swallowed whole the Bulldog squad until Freshmen became the court stars and Upperclassmen became in- jured benchmen. Consistency best describes last year's track season as the ACC team only tied one match and placed sec- ond in a Tri-Meet. We lost everything else. Track at ACC is a sport which has had to take a back seat to some of the more important ones such as Baseball and Basketball. The last two years ACC lacked a coach who knew the least bit about track before coming here. Perhaps our Administration has its reasons for the lack of emphasis on track. Maybe the heir- archy wants to give some coach the chance to use the track team as a training ground or maybe those in po- sitions of trust figure that the lagging tongues on the track team are not worth as much time and mon- ey as the super-stars of other sports. Whatever the reason for the back-seat position the track team has had to take we feel they are hardly conducive to a balanced athletic program. The track team had a difficult season last year. But do not let the record deceive you. The record was pa- thetic, yet, as often is the case, the scores failed to tell the whole story. The team possessed considerable tal- ent. In almost every meet the runners outscored their opponents, but the field men failed to meet their quota — the difference between victory and defeat. This year's season looked much brighter. Returning lettermen were Charles Hooks, Jack Tobin, Chuck Whittington, Charles Wolfe, and Alton Hill. GOLF The three players pictured here were expected to be the nucleus of this year s golf team. Bill Doyle, Gordon Fulp, and John Alford were the only returning let- termen from last year and the outcome of the season depended on how well they parred. Gordon Fulp was elected team leader. Last year's team had strong similarities to the track team. Of course five wins and five losses was a little above par for ACC sports. 64-65 INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC RECORDS Base Ball Opponent ACC St. Andrews 6 2 St. Andrews 6 5 St. Andrews 7 1 Guilford 2 8 Guilford 3 4 Elon 4 5 Elon 1 2 Appalachian 1 0 Appalachian .... 1 3 Catawba 8 1 Catawba 1 7 W. (If this is true, and you can see it, then you have a unique perception.) Admittedly we have presented a limited view of college life. We make no apology. An honest effort has been made to be different, not simply for the sake of origi- nality, nor even to be controversial. More- over this annual is different because we were suffering from a neurotic boredom brought about by a never-ending change in past annuals. Evidence of different should be noted in the use of the horizontal format and the length of the annual. We feel the pho- tography and copy are expressions of real- ism, while the art works tend to convey ideas. The blending of seemingly unre- lated materials (montages, etc.) with the photographs and the copy was done for the purpose of relating atmosphere with reality in the year 65-66. Contrary to what may appear there has been no organized attempt to propagan- dize any religious doctrine, social philoso- phy, or political heresy in this annual. Perhaps it was unorganized.
