MODERN LANGUAGE The Modern Language Department of Atlantic Christian College is seeking to provide a foundation in the study of languages that will help the students to understand the people of other cultures and the world. Through this knowledge of the people and their culture we will be able to understand our own culture and become good citizens of today and tomorrow. The goal of the department is to teach the student to speak, understand, and write foreign languages and from this to learn to appreciate the culture and be able to relate it to our own. Through the regular class periods and the labs these goals are achieved. The department offers a major in the areas of French and Spanish and minors in the areas of French, Spanish, and German. The program is designed to help the student use his own language more effectively through the study of a for- eign language. English may actually be better understood through the study of a Modern Language. DR. ESTHER L. LONG A.B., Ellsworth College; A.M., Ph.D., University of Iowa HUGH B. JOHNSTON, JR. 29

MUSIC It has always been difficult to verb- alize about music. Quite often, music is its own best spokesman. Philosophically, the liberal arts tradition as well as the very nature of aesthetics identifies music as an integral part of man’s total experience. Music enters into many phases of life at Atlantic Christian College. Through course offerings, the music department supplements and broadens the work of other departments, religion and educa- tion, to mention two. Through Music Survey, through private instruction, and through activities such as instrumental and vocal groups, the entire school is served. In these ways the department attempts to fulfill the real purpose of music itself, that of making available to man another language, a universal one, one by which he may express himself more completely, and may partake more fully of life itself.
