X'-isif1 fig a I ft ft % ■ i HSSS n B iff 1962 Atlantic Christian College WILSON, NORTH CAROLINA DEDICATED IN By her generous service in the fields of drama, creative writing and debate, Mrs. Holsworth has enhanced greatly the cultural opportunities af- forded the students of Atlantic Christian College and the surrounding areas. Through the superior performance of her students in competition in various parts of the country, the college has gained prominence in these fields. Her Shakespeare pro- ductions are treasured experiences. A native New Englander, Mrs. Holsworth was educated at Mt. Holyoke and at Emerson College where she received her master’s degree. She has also studied at the Yale Drama School and at Rad- cliff. Since coming to Atlantic Christian in 1947, she has served the campus through innumerable committees. By her carrying of plays to festivals across the state, her young playwrights and actors have won top honors at the Carolina Drama Festi- val at Chapel Hill and other competition. In appreciation for her tireless and cheerful efforts to bring to the students of Atlantic Chris- tian enrichment and satisfaction of achievement, the staff gratefully dedicates the nineteen sixty-two PINE KNOT to Mrs. Doris Campbell Holsworth. WENGER President Of Atlantic Christian College Atlantic Christian College stands on the threshold of a new and challenging era, having rendered service to more than 10,000 alumni and former students who have lived and learned within its walls since its founding in 1902. The trustees, the faculty and the student body salute those who join the ranks of the College’s alumni who hold positions of leadership and trust in many fields of service both in this country and abroad. Beyond this we express profound appre- ciation to all who give of their means, their time and their services to the end that the College is enabled to fulfill its important role of leadership preparation. The College is irrevocably committed to a program which is centered in those values which do not change with changing times. 7 A college is not only a place, but lan idea. It is the idea of freedom of thought and expression; of relaxed relationships among faculty and students in modern surroundings which makes Atlantic Christian College an institution of unique merit. louaf cni dren 10 forever are we. 1 1 hi rue to thu 6 ue ano white, Aw 14 • • • CflJTfiaif to tlieel 15 ATLANTIC CHRISTIAN COLLEGE IS AN ACCREDITED MEMBER OF Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools Association of American Colleges North Carolina College Conference North Carolina Council of Church- Related Colleges North Carolina Foundation of Church-Related Colleges Board of Higher Education, Disciples of Christ Unified Promotion, Disciples of Christ CONTENTS Administration F acuity Classes Organizations Greeks Features Athletics ADMINISTRATION MILLARD P. The emphasis of the department is in the direction of the fine arts; however, many students take art courses as a result of State Department of Education requirements, and as electives. Other than the need to provide courses to ful- fill state requirements, the department’s Philosophy is directed toward a strictly liberal arts orientation within the frame- work and structure of a college like Atlantic Christian College. RUSSELL W. ARNOLD A.B., Atlantic Christian College; A.M., University of North Carolina; special study, New York Art Students League; special study with Hans Hoffman 24 BUSINESS The Department of Business was or- ganized in response to a demand for courses designed to prepare students for business careers and for teaching busi- ness subjects in the secondary schools. The courses offered cover the general field of business and economics. The main objectives of the Business Department are to prepare students for accounting positions, secretarial service, banking, merchandising, and executive positions in the field of business and in- dustry, and to train teachers of business subjects. The student receives instruc- tion both in sound business principles and in the practical applications of these principles. The curricula include subjects which provide a liberal college education in addition to technical training. GEORGE HARRY SWAIN B.S., Tennessee Polytechnic Institute; A.M., M.Ed., further study, George Peabody College for Teachers 25 LYNN N. WEST ASHTON WIGGS EDUCATION AND PSYCHOLOGY Atlantic Christian College has con- tributed a high percentage of its gradu- ates to the teaching profession. While the high percentage of our students who enter the teaching field is comparable to that of a teacher’s college, our philoso- phy is that of a liberal arts college. We attempt to combine a broad cultural education with professional competence. The Department of Education and Psychology, within the context of a lib- eral arts program, offers a major in elementary education and a minor in psychology. In addition, it cooperates with the various academic departments in securing certification for their majors. DR. JOHN R. SCUDDER, JR. A.B., Vanderbilt University; A.M., University of Alabama; B.D., The College of the Bible; Ed.D., Duke University 26 G. A. PURVIS ENGLISH The Department of English is dedi- cated to the creativeness of students and to a study of the great literature of human history. The accomplishments of young poets, playwrights, and storytell- ers; the publication of the student maga- zine, The Little Review; the production of fine plays by Stage and Script—these are at the heart of the department’s work. The Department offers three types of major: the major taken by those who wish teacher certification; the major for those who do not plan to teach; and the major for those who wish a speech- drama slant. Approximately forty stu- dents are now working for distinction in English as majors. DR. MILDRED E. HARTSOCK A.B., A.M., Ph.D., University of Cincinnati DOROTHY EAGLES DORIS C. HOLSWORTH EDNA JOHNSTON 27 ELIZABETH H. JORDAN FRANCES P. WOODARD HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION The Health and Physical Education Department of Atlantic Christian is pri- marily concerned with instruction in healthy living, professional education of those wishing to become physical educa- tion teachers or athletic coaches and intramurals sports for both men and women. Through the Health and Physical Education Department many habits are taught which influence good health. Good sportsmanship is also a vital part of this department. The department is made up of eight members. All of these members strive to give Atlantic Christian and its stu- dents a much better understanding and appreciation of physical education. EDWARD L. CLOYD, JR. B.S., Davidson College; A.M., University of North Carolina; further study, Florida State University BULOW W. BOWMAN VIRGINIA CANNON GORDON E. COKER 28 RONALD P. HYATT JAMES E. McCOMAS MODERN LANGUAGE The Modern Language Department of Atlantic Christian College is seeking to provide a foundation in the study of languages that will help the students to understand the people of other cultures and the world. Through this knowledge of the people and their culture we will be able to understand our own culture and become good citizens of today and tomorrow. The goal of the department is to teach the student to speak, understand, and write foreign languages and from this to learn to appreciate the culture and be able to relate it to our own. Through the regular class periods and the labs these goals are achieved. The department offers a major in the areas of French and Spanish and minors in the areas of French, Spanish, and German. The program is designed to help the student use his own language more effectively through the study of a for- eign language. English may actually be better understood through the study of a Modern Language. DR. ESTHER L. LONG A.B., Ellsworth College; A.M., Ph.D., University of Iowa HUGH B. JOHNSTON, JR. 29 MUSIC It has always been difficult to verb- alize about music. Quite often, music is its own best spokesman. Philosophically, the liberal arts tradition as well as the very nature of aesthetics identifies music as an integral part of man’s total experience. Music enters into many phases of life at Atlantic Christian College. Through course offerings, the music department supplements and broadens the work of other departments, religion and educa- tion, to mention two. Through Music Survey, through private instruction, and through activities such as instrumental and vocal groups, the entire school is served. In these ways the department attempts to fulfill the real purpose of music itself, that of making available to man another language, a universal one, one by which he may express himself more completely, and may partake more fully of life itself. JAMES V. COBB, JR. A.B., B.Mus., Southwestern at Memphis; A.M., Boston University; further study, University of North Carolina, University of Illinois GENE A. DONALD G. FEATHERSTONE HENSHAW 30 RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY The cornerstone of Atlantic Christian College as defined in its aims lies in the department of Religion and Philosophy. The purpose of this department is to add strength and grace of the Christian tra- dition to the general cultural education. The development of character through Christian education, the combining of intellectual ability with a growing spir- itual insight, and the inspiration to ac- tive service is indeed a contribution to the world. The many hundreds of former students who are Christian citizens and leaders and now serve in the ministerial and religious educational fields amply attest to the fulfillment of this goal by Atlantic Christian College. DR. WILLIAM E. TUCKER A.B., Atlantic Christian College; B.D., Texas Christian University; A.M., Ph.D., Yale University DANIEL J. EUGENE GEORGE HENSLEY, JR. PURCELL, JR. DR. VERE H. ROGERS 31 DR. J. P. TYNDALL A.B., Atlantic Christian College; A.M., University of North Carolina; Ed.D., University of Florida SCIENCE AND MATH The Department of Science and Math- ematics offers an opportunity for stu- dents to investigate the phenomena of the universe in an intellectual atmos- phere under the direction of trained personnel. In addition to factual infor- mation, scientific ways of working and thinking are stressed in the classrooms and laboratories. That the Department prepares its stu- dents to take a rightful and respected place in a scientific world is illustrated by the fact that its graduates have found employment in many scientific fields. The interests of the students in the Department are varied. Some are pre- paring to become teachers, others are preparing to enter graduate schools, while others are concerned with the pre- medical sciences; some students look forward to careers with the government or with industry. JOHN w. DUNN ROBERT C. ROBERT P. FRAZIER HOLLAR MYRTLE THOMP- WARREN R. DR. DEEMS N. JANET SON SWAIN TAIT WIGGS WINSTEAD 32 SOCIAL STUDIES The courses offered in this depart- ment attempt to give the student a broader understanding of the society in which he lives; and in this way, it is the ultimate objective of the department to produce better citizens. In order to produce better citizens, the department of social studies offers a major in history or a major in political science leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. The department offers minors in history, political science, and soci- ology. Usually this department has about fifty majors. Many will go to graduate school, others will begin teaching, many will use their background gained from this department to climb the political ladder, and still others will become social workers. The heritage of history is precious and unique. Through these instructors we will learn the responsibility of safe- guarding what we hold most dear— “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Hap- piness.” DR. DANIEL M.
