is published annually by the students of Atlantic Christian College, Wilson, North Caro- lina. College days arrive and pass quickly—while hours of toil spent in achieving success —while hours of play spent in fellowship—are no more than memories. In the Pine Knot we try to recapture these memories, hoping that these pages will constantly bring back to life those pre- cious hours spent during our stay at Atlantic Christian. 1 In memory we live out our past. In hope we anticipate things yet to come: But now, only now, is ever ours. The programs of this organization are developed by the S.C.A. cabinet and are based on the students’ interest. Every denomination has a representative on the cabinet and in this way there is a con- crete example of Christian unity within the school. The S.C.A. has tried this year to function in the background rather than the foreground. Working with the fraternities, sororities, and departmental clubs, the Student Christian Association has tried to make Christianity a real part of the lives of the students and faculty. Under the direction of Mr. James Cobb, the chorus presents both sacred and secular pro- grams. This year, in addition to trips to Charleston, S. C., Williamston and Dunn, N. C., and their annual spring tour (this year in the eastern part of our own state), the chorus fulfilled a long- standing dream when, in co-operation with Stage and Script, they presented a musical, “Down in the Valley.” This folk opera by Kurt Weill was presented in March. Those members of the chorus who participated received a real thrill in being a part of this stage production. The chorus looks forward to increasing op- portunities in the future as their place in campus life develops and as they continue to represent Atlantic Christian College to the outside public. CHORUS 99 BAND Listen to that band! The Atlantic Christian Col- lege Band of 1957-58 directed by Mr. Darrell Har- baum has not only performed in parades but has aroused a great deal of school spirit by providing music for our basketball games. The group has worked very hard this year and should certainly be commended. . % ASSEMBLY AND CONCERT COMMITTEE Left to right: Martha Jones, David Blackwood, Betty Bain, Ralph Messick, and Mr. Bardin. I9S7 GRADUATION 1957 130 I HEAD COACH JACK McCOMAS Jack McComas, Head Coach of the Atlantic Chris- tian College Bulldogs and Director of Physical Edu- cation since 1951, has proved to us that Indiana deserves its wide acclaim as a basketball state. Formerly from Shelbyville, Indiana, McComas played basketball in Germany on the 15th Army corps team along with Paul Horvath and Vic Bubas. After getting out of service, this trio journeyed to North Carolina State College in Raleigh. Here McComas gained his reputation for being one of the most versatile and consistent players in the con- ference playing forward and guard. He was named to the All-Conference Basketball Team his sopho- more year. He also played professional baseball with the Braves Farm System in Denver, Raleigh and Wilson. McComas came to us when the going was a little rough, because Intercollegiate football had just been dropped at A.C. and he had the responsibility of building a basketball team. The hard work and constant struggle that he endured the first few years paid off in 1953, when the Bulldogs fought their way to the tournament finals. The following year Coach McComas led the Bulldogs to the North State Conference Championship and on to become the NAIA District 26 Champions. This year with only one regular back, he has used an outstanding crop of newcomers and a few top reserves and built another contending team of which we can be proud. Raiford Fulghum, former Rock Ridge High School basketball and baseball star, has done a commendable job with the 1958 edition of the Bullpups. Raiford, once a member of the Junior Varsity basketball team and catcher for the baseball team, forfeited his right to participate in Intercollegiate sports when he signed a professional baseball con- tract with the Philadelphia Phillies Farm Club during the summer of 1956. Since he could no longer participate in college athletics, he assumed the duties of Assistant Coach with the responsibility of coaching the Freshman basketball team. Raiford has served well in the capacity of Assistant Coach and plans to teach and coach after he receives his A.B. degree in Physical Education this spring. ASSISTANT COACH RAIFORD FULGHUM Miss Mickey Raynor, a graduate of Atlantic Chris- tian College, returned to our campus last year to fill a vacancy in the Department of Physical Education. Since that time, she has served well in her capacity as Teacher of Physical Educa- tion and Health, Director of Women’s Intramurals, and Advisor of the Women’s Recreation Association. She hails from Wilson where she graduated from Charles L. Coon High School. She received her A.B. degree in English from Atlantic Christian College in 1954 but returned the following year for additional study. She now has an A.B. degree in Physical Education also. During the 1955-56 school year she taught at South Boston, Virginia. She was enrolled this past summer at the University of North Carolina where she began working toward her Master’s degree. Ed Cloyd, Head of the Department of Physical Education, is a native of Ra- leigh. He graduated from Davidson Col- lege where he was a star performer on the tennis team, did graduate work at North Carolina State College, and later received his Masters degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to his present position, he served with the United States Army for two years as a physical training officer at Fort Bragg. He is now Coach of the Atlantic Christian College Tennis Team and is a faculty advisor for the Physical Education Majors and Minors Club which he organized. He has been associated with the Blue Ridge Camp Assembly for the past two or three summers. I Gordon E. Coker, better known as Sam, has certainly been very a valuable asset to the Physical Education Department since he joined the staff last year. A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, he graduated from the Univer- sity of Tennessee in 1951 with a B.S. degree and later returned to receive his Mas- ters degree in 1955. He taught Physical Educa- tion and served as track coach for five years at Knox County High School before coming to our campus. At Atlantic Christian he teaches in the Physical Education Department and is now serv- ing as Coach of the Bulldog Track Team. He is also a faculty advisor for the Physi- cal Education Club. Libby Griffin, who now hails from Wilson, serves as student assistant in the Women’s Physical Education Depart- ment. She will receive her A.B. degree this spring with a major in physical edu- cation and a minor in history. She is a 1954 graduate of Elm City High School where her team zoomed through four undefeated seasons of county play and to four County Basket- ball Championships. She was named to the All-County Team her senior year. She has worked with the Wilson Recrea- tion Department as a playground super- visor for the past two summers. She is now serving her fourth year on the cheering squad and is President of Sigma Tau Chi Sorority. Tommy Willis, who comes to us from Beaufort, is Head Student Assistant of Men’s Intramurals. He will receive his B.S. degree in May with a major in physical education and a minor in his- tory. Tommy, a graduate of Smyrna Con- solidated High School near Beaufort, has been very active in several clubs and in Sigma Rho Phi Fraternity. He is Presi- dent of the Physical Education Club and serves as Statistician for the Atlantic Christian College Bulldogs. WOMEN'S INTRAMURALS C W£ The Women’s Intramural Program of Atlantic Christian College is organized primarily for women who are interested in active participation in sports: The program is directed by the Intramural Council which is composed of the W.R.A. officers and a unit manager from each team. But we hope that our boys will do as good a job as the team did last year. The team is coached by Jack Mc- Comas, who also coaches the basketball team. The lineup will be different due to the loss of some of the players who graduated, but this loss can be made up by spirit and teamwork. 149 MEDITATIONS As we turn the pages of this, the 1958 version of the Pine Knot, we shall recall the endless hours that were spent in preparing it. We hope that it will serve as a constant reminder of what our own A.C.C. stands for. Many thanks go to the staff, who have helped us make this annual possible. We would also like to thank Johnny for his untiring devo- tion and excellent suggestions. Special thanks go to Mr. Arnold and Mr. Swain, our advisors. We must not forget Mr. Fulghum, head of the publications board, when we are saying; “Thank you.” With smiles on our faces we close this book and wish the “Best of Luck” to the staff that shall follow us.
