MARY WILSON COLLEGE NURSE It is with a genuine feeling of pride that we dedicate to you this, the 1953 PINE KNOT. We will always remember the friendly warmth of your greeting, the untiring devotion you have shown these past fifteen years, your ability to rais|M| out of a state of depression. With this pride we also feel a sincere humility in offering this small token in return for your years of service to Atlantic Christian. With this com- bination of pride and humility we, the student body, dedicate the 1953 PINE KNOT to you, “MA” Wilson. •wjm i MAYO 5 1983 No one who has ever been affiliated with Atlantic Christian College, whether it be in the capacity of administrator, instructor, or student, has ever left without the feeling that he is a member of the AC. family group. There is on our campus a certain intimacy, of which we are all proud, which encompasses us all in its scope. The faculty-student rela- tionship is one of individual friendship, a rare thing indeed on a college campus. We have tried to capture means of informal pictures and present the 1953 PINE KNOT. this attitude throughout the book layout designs. With this in mind by we Dr. J. J. Harper Why do historians’ minds turn to dates? Is it really history to say that Kinsey Seminary was built in 1898 . . . that it was taken over by the Disciples of Christ as Atlantic Christian College in 1902 . . . that nine years later Caldwell Hall was built as a dormitory for men . . . that during the five years from 1934 to 1939 the gymnasium, dining hall, heating plant, and chapel were completed . . . that a $400,000 women’s dormitory and a $200,000 li- brary were completed in time for the beginning of the fiftieth term of classes in September 1951? Or does history rightly trace changes in the personality of students and teachers—the sober, studious generation; the war-conscious generation; the generation of the Jazz Age; the hard-working, almost starving generation? years In order to get historical perspective we need not say in what order these generations came. Per- haps it is enough for us to be conscious that history plays no favorites. Just as not one in 1902 may have foreseen Harper Hall or Hardy Library, so may those first students have found little on which to base an opinion of the classes of ’53 and ’54. Have any moralists asked you, “Are you justify- ing the faith of your predecessors who struggled to get a broad education in a tiny college’’ Does this make you stop and moralize, “What faith ever en- tered my mind about the ACC students fifty years „ from now’ r5 Or is history going to be its own natural self— a steady record of our own studying in order to sur- vive and “may the best students win!’? i BOARD of TRUSTEES Charles F. The President of ATLANTIC CHRISTIAN COLLEGE a letter from a TEXAN The sharp tenor of the winged bird, the soprano chirp of the cricket, the soft alto rustle of the trees, and the booming bass of the croaking frog all blend to create a vast symphony of nature. In like manner, there is a symphony of the campus. Eager minds capacitated with an apprehension of truth, warm hearts inherently aware of beauty, striving souls after goodness, and strong bodies dedicated to the quest of a cause worth living for har- monize to create a symphony of life. This is the world’s really great unfinished sym- phony, for the truly educated person is one who is insatiable in his hunger for the good, the beautiful, and the true. June Holton........... Billy Tucker......... Suzanne Gill......... Nobody knows the trouble they’ve seen.” But everybody at Atlantic Christian College knows that the democracy of our student-faculty government is distinctive and effec- tive. The six faculty members and eleven students who make up the Executive Board of the Cooperative Association play many parts in many campus dramas. Now, they are financiers, carefully dispensing the funds for student activities; again, they are a sober tribunal, weighing the serious factors in disciplinary matters. They are vigilant to discover any project which may be developed for the benefit of the whole college. Rain or fair weather, they will be found every Monday night deliberating in their meet- ing room in the library. These seventeen people are our Executive Board. But we— a|| of us—are the Cooperative Association. We are not afraid of dictators or inqui- sitions. We govern ourselves in the best traditions of democracy. Vice-President .... Secretary .... This goal is sought after through the undertaking of such projects as vesper services, discussion groups, wholesome recreation, and charitable drives. Under the present plan, upon entering A. C. C.’s popular varsity coach is Jack McComas of Shelbyville, Indiana. He played three years of var- sity ball for the State Wolfpack. This is his second year of coaching. Last summer, McComas was man- ager and third baseman for the Wilson Tobs. He led the Coastal Plain League in home runs with twenty- five to his credit. Starting last year with not much height on his ball club, he has built a good strong team that has shown plenty of ability, speed, and accuracy this year, a tribute to his very able coach- ing and persevering spirit. JACK McCOMAS—VARSITY COACH COACHING STAFF The Junior Varsity has been fortunate this year to have Coach Tom Pritchard to guide them. He graduated from Contentnea High School at Kinston, then had coaching positions there and at Moss Hill High School. Later he signed professional baseball as a pitcher in the Detroit Tiger Chain, hurling for Davenport, Iowa, in fifty-one and for Tarboro in fifty-two. He is a Sophomore at A. C. and besides coaching the J V.’s he serves as pitcher’s coach in baseball. C. campus. After a poor season last year, nobody expected too much of this year's Bulldogs. But we’ve seen some great games and thrilling moments. Ingraham is the only senior on the team. The Juniors are Gilbert Ferrell, and Kelly Byrum, a transfer from Campbell Junior College, who has given the team the spark it needed this year. Jim Hebbe, Jim Peebles, Bill Price, and Eddie Johnson are the sophomores, and three freshmen who have added a great deal to the team are Jerry Williams, Delano Whitley, and Gene Egerton. With not much experience but a lot of spark and hustle, the Bulldogs scored impres- sive victories over High Point, Guilford and Catawba while dropping three close ones, real heart breakers, to Elon, Appalachian, and Lenoir-Rhyne. In every game, win or lose, the Bulldogs have played hard and shown great sports- manship. The success of this year’s team makes us look forward eagerly to next year when A. C. should have more experienced players and perhaps some new height which is the biggest need of the squad this year.
