Fifty years ago Atlantic Christian College was founded. Its half-century of history has seen many changes. There have been world-conflicts; there have been times of depression; there have been peaceful, good times. These years have left memorable imprints upon our Alma Mater. Through her corridors have passed, truly, great men—leaders of yester- day, today, and tomorrow—men of high ideals striving for the better- ment of our civilization. It is in recognition of the Fiftieth Anniversary of Atlantic Christian College that we publish the 1952 Pine Knot. We have recorded here a bit of the drama in the making. That is why we have chosen as our theme ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE. 4 Here 3t Hegan Jftftp JSearsi Ugo ♦ ♦ ♦ o ... lUnb it Btb increase! 6 gfomimstration Jf acuity Every show must have a producer, director and other technicians. All the scenes knit closely together—the mealtime discussions, the social functions after six o'clock, light bell for the girls at eleven o'clock, chapel attendance—all the little things that happen in our daily living go into making this drama worthwhile. 15 Jay Clark President Urtubent Cooperative gtoctatton Since 1936, the government of the college has been committed to the Co-operative Association, which han- dles all major student affairs. This association is com- posed of eleven students and five faculty members, who work together in supervising the finances, entertain- ments, social life, intramurals, and other maters per- taining to the general welfare of the student body. On May 5, 1938, this organization joined with a newly-formed Men s Honor Society in creat- ing a new organization, known as Golden Knot Honor Society. Since Golden Knot came into existence, it has striven to promote high ideals, not only among its own members, but also among the student body as a whole. Perhaps the out- standing project that the organization has undertaken was that of sponsoring a scholar- ship for a foreign student. The organization felt that this gesture was in keeping with promoting the cause of learning on our campus. Golden Knot is more than a service organi- zation, however. Membership is an honor— an award for outstanding achievement in scholarship, service, leadership, and char- acter. In choosing its members, the society looks for people who have made noticeable achieve- ments in learning, exemplified good moral character, served the college and their fellow students, and demonstrated ability to lead. To be eligible for membership, the candidate must have been on the campus for three preceding semesters and must have averaged a 2.0 under the present grading system. Each spring Golden Knot holds its annual “tapping” ceremony, at which time the new members selected on the four qualifications, scholarship, service, leadership, and character, are tapped into membership. Golden Knot is the only honorary society on the campus of Atlantic Christian College. Due to many difficulties, one being that of a necessity of men for Uncle Sam’s Armed Forces, football was suspended from the sports roster. Instead, the sports program was centered around basketball and baseball. The “Bulldogs,” having only three lettermen from last year’s season, saw a great number of freshmen eager to put out a winning team in the North State Conference. Jay Clark, Reid Ingraham, and Gilbert Ferrell were the veterans of the team. Although the team had more height than last year’s team, they were still at a dis- advantage. They were inexperienced at playing college basketball. But that didn’t keep them from playing some of the hardest-fought games ever to be seen in the college gymnasium. In most of the games the team led in the scoring in the first quarter, but it was just too much for our boys who were young. In many a game the “Bulldogs” had the opposing coach sweating it out even after the final whistle had blown. Several games were lost by only two points. When the team met East Carolina on January 18 in the college gymnasium, it was one of the battles of bitterest rivals in the conference. “Bohunkus,” the most prized trophy in any sports history even though it is just an old oaken bucket, left our campus after that game for a visit over at East Carolina. The fighting “Bulldogs,” who never give up, feel that little “Bohunkus” will get mighty homesick and want to come home around baseball season. This Great Drama has been lived—not only this year, but in the past years and in the years of the future. The stars take their final curtain call. The theatre is emptied in murmuring praise. Then the actors pause to recall the toil of the production— and the enjoyment. They pause and remember as we have recorded on these pages. It is now that we pause in remembrance of the hectic times we went through and the patience of those con- cerned in the publication of this book. The Faculty, when the students rushed in and out of classes for pictures; Dr. Hartsock, our adviser; Raines and Cox: Guy, Charlie, Walt, Elsie, Jean, and Dot; and Mr. Smith of Edwards and Broughton, the printers of this book, when we didn't meet our deadlines. It’s all over now and we remember —but “The Moving Hand writes, and, Having Writ, Moves On!” Fred and Nellie Rae. 88 fct)ertis;ement£ RAINES COX PHOTOGRAPHERS for ANNUAL STUDIO Carroll Building WILSON, NORTH CAROLINA Five Points Nursery and Floral Co. 904 Randolph Street Mrs. Charles E.
