Darlene Tucker Editor Kerry Kick lighter Business Manager THE 1950 PINE KNOT Published Annually By the Students of 3 I ATLANTIC CHRISTIAN COLLEGE—Wilson, North Carolina ( U r t? WE DEDICATE THE 195« PINE KNOT TO MR. J. M. WATERS It is with the greatest pleasure and deepest apprecia- tion and admiration that we dedicate this issue ol the Pine K noi to Mr. Waters as he leaves Atlantic Christian College after twenty-three years of devoted service. 4 Atlantic Christian College was opened in September of 1902 with only one building, Kinsey, and a small enrollment. In 1911, Caldwell Hall was built. Today, the limited enrollment of 500 is filled, and in the building program the Wilson Gymnasium, the Bert Hardy Dining Hall, a Central Heating Plant, and the Howard Chapel have already been completed. I he girl’s new dormitory is nearing completion and work has begun on the new library. 5 DR. CECIL A. JARMAN Acting President Greetings, May I take this opportunity to express deepest appreciation to all of the students and faculty members for the fine spirit of loyalty, coopera- tion, and support that has been exhibited this school year. W ith the coming of our new President, Dr. D. Ray Lindley, I am sure that the fine spirit that has been shown this year will continue through the years to come. With your continued help and under the leadership of the new president, Atlantic Christian will become an even greater institution than it is today. Let us all have an increased faith in her future welfare and progress. Faithfully yours, Cecil A. Jarman 6 FACULTY “If he is indeed wise he does not you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS Perry Case Registrar J. M. B. Narron 18 THROUGH THE YEARS Septe?? her of 1946 brought a somewhat different freshman class. It was made up largely of men, ex-servicemen—a welcome change to the lonely females who had predominated and led the campus during the war years. As freshmen, we soon became acquainted with Homecoming, Bohunkus, “Tweedie — and classmates, with of these acquaintances leading to matrimony. As sophomores, w the campus and Wilson blanketed in two of the biggest snows of our lives—which led to the cooks being snowbound and Sunday breakfast being supervised by none other than “Chef Dean Ward! Through the years we sang and danced to such tunes as k7 Love You For Sentimental Reasons , “Nature Boy , “It's Magic, and “Some Enchanted Evening. English majors learned the way to Apt. S with coffee served by Dr. “Butch. We saw a complete turnabout in fashions—from short skirts and long hair to long skirts and short hair. Aside from that, the class of '50 has seen many great changes take place on our campus— the girls' dormitory growing from the first brick to a beautiful building—the temporary Science Hall and “White House —the resignation of our president. Dr. Howard S. Hit ley— Dr. Jarman filling the vacant chair as acting president—the resignation of Mr. Waters—the ground broken and the new Hardy library getting well under way. Now that the Howard Chapel graduation is rapidly approaching, we realize that we may be smiling through tears as we enter the Chapel for the last time as students. But, if our footsteps have not been worthless, if any we have made have enriched the life of our school, then we may leave proudly and make room for future processions of Atlantic Christian students who will retrace the footprints of—the class of '50. 19 ERNEST ATKINSON Kcnly SENIORS HAROLD BAIN Dunn President Freshman Class; “A” Club 1, 2, 3, 4, President 2; Phi Kappa Alpha 2, 3, 4, Treasurer 3; football I; Baseball I, 2, 3; B.B. It s been a hard year, full of plans and ideas—some that materialized and some that didn’t but as we glance at this red and w hite eover w e like to think it was worth it.. We overeut our classes, and then cut them again; we worked late at night, then snoozed in class the follow ing mornings; we rushed to beat deadlines, money became scarce, paper gave out, tempers ran short, another pack of cigarettes went up in smoke. But w ith encouragement and ideas from Dr. Hartsock the staff revived and decided that it had all been a lot of fun, friendship, and good, honest work. Maybe it isn’t the best yearbook published, but we think it’s a pretty good Pine Knot—anyway, we hope you like it. Coach Carl Blythe’s Bulldogs finished in first division in the nine team North State Conference. In general the season got off' to a slow' start, but the hard-fighting Blythemen came back in the waning days to finish in the top bracket. League play saw “Boluinkus” take a “round trip,'’ only to remain at E.C.T.C. after a close 3 to 4 classic. The Blythemen recorded triumphs over strong service teams from Norfolk Navy and Naval Air Station. The win that really helped was a sweet 6 to 5 honey over the local Wilson lobs of the Coastal Plain League. The hurling of “Big Gun” J. 1). Thorne, Joby Griffin, and Raymond Suggs was superb, and the nitting of Art Garrett—K)6, Jack Allsbrook—306, and Tom Callahan—301, paid off in the clinches. Afield, “Sparky” McCaskill, Tom Callahan, and Buck Jones were outstanding. 76 BASKETBALL Atlantic Christian Opponent Atlantic Christian Opponent 54 Newport News. . . . 69 40.... E.C.T.C 57 77 FOOTBALL Coach Bill Crutchfield unw rapped his Christian Bulldog football material lor the first time against a strong Catawba aggregation, and went down in defeat under a last quarter avalanche of touchdowns 39 to 0. That was the picture and the preview' of what was to follow in their next eight outings for the undaunted Bulldogs during their ’49 football campaign. Out-numbered, out-weighted, out-scholar- shipped—but not out-fought. For the thousands who saw A.C.C. on the field and off respected their abilities and spirit of fair play. The coaching staff in Coaches Bill Crutchfield and Bob Reynolds accomplished an excellent job—and gained a conference wfide reputation as one of the games better teachers. The best featuring attack of the Crutchficldmcn were against Norfolk Navy and our old friends from E.C.T.C. Either game could have fallen in favor for the Blue and White, but those old Nemeses of too little and too late arose to do their work. Outstanding and yeomen in the forward wall were Little-All-American Ned Eiggon, Joe Leonard!, Buddy Walker, and All-Stater Kerry Kicklightcr. Backfield standouts and leading the attack were “Sparky” McCaskill, Clyde “Smack-over” Sullivan, and Harry “Lefty” Helmer. 78 79 Joe Costi n hit van nival Dim tor BASKETBALL Sigma Alpha “Rebels” Pennant Winners 80 TOUCH FOOTBALL Sigma Alpha “Rebels” Pennant initers Phi Kappa Alpha Pennant f7inners VOLLEY BALL 81 CHEERLEADERS Left to right:Sarah Dillon, Jack Greenwood, Susan Lewis, Jimmy Nichols, Bett Wheeler, Edwin Alston, Joyce Harrell, Steve Gliarmis, and Garol Lou Summerneld. To see that he did an excellent job you need only look on the next page. Raines and Cox, photographers for the yearbook, presented an eleven by fourteen portrait of the winning- picture to the Queen.
