OL. FORTY-NINERS 0 0 0 Hu, 1949 OKI® KKGDIT Published by the Student Body of ATLANTIC CHRISTIAN COLLEGE 11 Wilson, North Carolina. JIM WILDER, Editor MORGAN SUMNER, Bus. Mgr. PAST FUTURE 9 A, 7 ■ 3061 Aerial View of Campus at ATLANTIC CHRISTIAN COLLEGE The aim of the 1949 PINE KNOT staff has been to present a record of the progress and achievements of the past year and to portray the spirit of A.C.C. With long hours of work and fun behind us we offer you a picture of the student life on our campus —our classes—our work—our play. With the hope that this annual will be a possession worth cherish- ing and with deep appreciation for the cooperation we have re- ceived, we present this volume—The 1949 PINE KNOT. 6 JIM AND MORGAN C. H. HAMLIN Professor of Social Science DEDICATED TO ... Only occasionally do we find an individual possessing the rare combination of teacher, scholar, and true friend. All of us who have had the fortune of attending Atlantic Christian since 1925 have known such an uncommon privilege. Dr. Hamlin has endeared himself to countless students, friends of the College, and acguaintances by his generosity, wisdom, and understanding. Realizing the inadeguacy of any tribute we can pay him, we dedicate this volume to Dr. C. H. Hamlin, with deep gratitude tor his wisdom, friendship, and patience. 7 DR. H. S. It was a green band of Freshmen that went to Catawba on Sept. 18, and the vaunted Indians did the expected by knocking over the Blue and White by a 42 to 7 count. The next weekend a surprisingly improved band of Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker to Elon, 13 to 7 when a 90 yard pass play was nullified in the warning minutes of the game—a badly marked field being the cause. In the next game with the Navy Apprentice School, the Bulldogs all but pushed their opposition out of the staduim only to lose again 15 to 6. High Point came next and the Panthers walloped the A.C.C. gridders, 47 to 0. But, on the follow- ing Saturday it was the Bulldogs turn to board the victory wagon for the first time since 1946 by 7 to 0 victory over Norfolk Navy. In the next three successive games it was Guilford, 19-0; Lenoir Rhyne, 19-0; and Appalachian 26-7 over the Bulldogs. With only one precious win, Atlantic Christian ended their season with a sweep- ing 6 to 0 win over their arch rival E.C.T.C. One of A.C's most colorful athletes, Lefty Helmer, terminated his football career by leading his -team to this victory with one of the greatest punting exhibitions ever witnessed in the North State Conference. Now Read This—Please At last our work on this volume is ended—an event that has been eagerly looked forward to, for it has meant enduring many long hours of work; the constant threat of deadlines; and the possibility of delivery being delayed until after Commencement. It seems years ago since we felt free to study or to enjoy a free night, but at last we feel and are free. Free, with the hope that this annual will merit your approval. If it pleases you we are gratified. In later years if it brings a happy moment of recalling some memorable event in your college life we will feel that our time and patience spent have been amply rewarded. Our sincere gratitude is here offered to the students, faculty members, and many friends who have been of invaluable aid to us. We wish to express our special appreciation to the members of the staff—to Darlene, Mr. Murray, Miss Ward, Raines and Cox, Jean and Walt, Mr. Wm. Oliver Smith, Raleigh, Billy Rose and Elenore Holm Rose of New York, our advertisers, and, last but by no means least, to the dear faculty members that were so understanding and generous to us in regards to class cuts—we bow to you in appreciation of these sterling deeds. Get acguainted with all of these wonderful people. They are the ones who have helped make this book all that it is. They are indeed our friends, and yours. What can you do to help solve the serious school-teacher shortage? YOU CAN DO THIS! First: Check up on educational conditions in your local schools. Second: Work with civic groups and school boards seeking to improve teachers’ working and living conditions.
