Four years? Yes, four years ago we piled off busses and trains that brought us from all parts of the nation, had our first glance at the sprawling city of At- lanta, whizzed to the corner of Courtland and Forrest to be enthusiastically hailed by Norton and Englett with strong handclasps and emphatically addressed DOCTOR upon every occa- sion possible. Remember how it sent a warm glow over you until- Now, if you havenlt placed your order, I represent-. How helpless you felt when all the equipment arrived. Do you re- member the indulgent upperclassmen who helped you mark it, the round of fraternities, the first effort to make a piece of compound resemble a tooth? Christmascame and passed swiftly with its holidays. Then we settled to the routine of the year. Dentures! Final examinations! YVith sighs of relief we looked up. Spring had passed unnoticedg summer had arrived. From all varieties of jobs, we returned for the sophomore year, bronzed by the summer sun, healthy, expectant, eager. The infinite detail attempted by clumsy, unaccustomed hands, work done over and over and over until we were sick at heart, the stifling heat and hiss of blow torches, the eerie glare of the bluish-yellow gas fiames until one thought of Dante's Inferno, nerves on edge, putting on the pressure to get our technical work completed,-remember? Then in those moments we began to know that one who enters a profession is choosing a life of ordeals. Final examinations! Summer! Dentistry had become transformed from an idea to the para- mount issue in life. Back again. Helping the freshmen get checked, buying clinic coats, staggering up the clinic stairs with weak knees,-the first roll call, that first unsuspecting patient,-trembling hands,- operation completed, success. And then that first root-canal, diagnosis and oral surgery sec- tions, remaking inlays, laboriously packing foil. Christmas! Then came the introduction to children's dentistry and the set pace of the year. ln Rlarch we were shocked by the death of Dr. Hughes Whose useful life was packed with inspiration that touched every one with whom he came in contact. Then in Rlay examination after examination. Exhausted, we faced the summer. And now We are seniors. Did we look as fresh, as enthusiastic four years ago as these fresh- men do this year? Looking about me I see lines in my friends' faces that were not there then. There are the problems of diplomas, selecting locations, buying equipment, passing state boards. Now we are beginning to be in a position to really appreciate those who have made a success in the dental profession. VVe know something of the sacrifice, the excruciating labor, and the temptations that have crossed their paths. No history would be complete without a word of tribute to the faculty to whom we are deeply indebted for their understanding and scholarship. Here our paths diverge, but let us resolve not to let the friendships and associations we have formed here become mere faded memory, but keep them fresh, vibrant, a living force in dentistry. B. C. How much of happiness lies in a glance, Or random word, that like a sudden ember Cleaves through the darkness with its golden lance, Striking old beauty that two hearts remember! NVe were all quite thrilled by a cordial Hello Doctor given us by our live-wire supply salesmen, Englett and Norton, upon our arrival in this great city. VVe were very much impressed at the opening exercises by the greetings and words of encouragement of Dr. Foster and Dr. Byrnes. This Occasion will live in our memories forever because this was the beginning of what we all sincerely hoped would be a happy and profitable career. Then came the schedules which were quite pleasing to the eyes of those students of AU section because there was an absence of Saturday classes: however, this was misleading, because with the advent of Oral Anatomy, we find these students at work in the laboratory on Saturday morning. 4 Our first impression of Dr. Stegall's widely publicized Anatomy course was that it was merely putty in our hands. This was only the first impression, however. be- cause our modeling clay was soon taken away and we were assigned sections of the human body to master by mental photography plus an interesting little book known as Gray's Anatomy. Through the undying patience and help of the amiable Dr. Stegall we finally hurdled this obstacle. VVe all went home to enjoy a much needed vacation. Upon Our return to begin our second year we were very glad to find that only a few of our great throng had fallen by the wayside. VVith this encouragement we began our second lap with much gusto. YVe were quite successful in our first much- dreaded Pathology quiz. VVe knew then that we were a great class. Had we not been subjected to the trials and tribulations of the basement we would probably still be laboring under the impression that we were impregnable. Upon the completion of another year's work we returned home for a very much needed vacation. ln spite of the hardships endured below, everyone appeared in white upon the opening of the clinic for the 1938-39 year. That was when we began enjoying the fruits of our labor. Then came those little inevitable mistakes which seem humorous to everyone, even the faculty. Buck', Rogers demonstrated dual ex- traction and Ernie Edwards checked a pontic for sensitivity. hlany other similar errors occurred. VVe are very grateful indeed that we have been able, with the help of a truly great faculty. to come through three years of hard work with only two missing from our ranks, numerically. llflay this fine class continue in its entirety! O V57 'QHPV R SOPHGMORE CLASS HISTORY NVE, THE CLASS OF '41, look back on our dental years with sophomoric satisfaction. As freshmen we first entered these famed portals of dental education, and our once im- mature minds have so developed, and grown, that at last we regard ourselves as erudite examples of profound, discerning and enlightened dental knowledge. ln brief, we know all there is to know about dentistry, or just about all. Some of the faculty members and upper classmen have intimated that this is merely a sophomoric state of mind, transient and illusory. But, we know better: for example, we are sure that we know twice as much about casting technique as anyone else in the world, except perhaps Dr. Sturdevant. Our life as freshmen passed quickly, but not so painlessly. After a summer spent at work or play we retu1'ned to the old familiar scene. Wie greeted the freshmen with a degree of condescending pity, but mostly with cordial welcome, even as we ourselves were welcomed. lVe found a few of the old faces missing, but discovered we were re-enriched by three new members: h'Ic,Nees, the modern llorpheus of the lecture hallsg Disillier, of Harvard, and Garibaldi Grimaldi, from Loyola. As sophomores we still maintained the doubtful distinction of being the smallest and only exclusively male class in school. Your historian has often wondered if we miss the uplifting feminine touch that a co-ed or two can give to a class. lVe plunged into our work and soon made the acquaintance of that much touted breaker of men's souls, bodies and minds, Old Demon Sophomore Lab. This place has the reputation of giving one a glimpse of the ultimate abode of all unethical dentists. However, with our class a certain change is noticeable. Under the forceful prompt- ing of Dr. Sturdevant, no trash now litters the corners, no paper disks pile up about the feet of the heedless sophomore. not even one speck of cigarette ash sullies the spot- less, painted, and immaculate floor. Dr. Sturdivant has indeed taught us much. Early in the year we overheard Kfotley asking him where he might purchase a half dozen of those sponge cores. VVe won this year, defeating the freshmen in the annual Plaster Howl touch foot- ball classic. A few of the class intellectuals organized a checker tournament. Those of us who do not belong to that mystic, esoteric group known as Checker Players, cannot entirely appreciate or comprehend the intricate and involved struggles over the checkered board which wasted away the lunch hour. The winner of the tournament was that never-to-be-forgotten genius of the king row and master of the triple jump, One- Punchn CStonewallj Jackson, with President 'XValker as the hard-pushing runner-up. Rusty'l Hoffman, our int1'epid lantern operator, will be remembered for his stereopticon views of Christmas cards. This year it appears that Handsome Noble and Keith have joined the ranks of the ball-and-chain men. XVe wonder who will be next. FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY LORD CHESTERFIELD, in his Letters, once said that history is only a confused heap of facts. From this heap your Hollingsheadn has gleaned some of the traces of the Freshman Class of '-PZ. On September twenty-sixth or thereabout the Atlanta-Southern Dental College received her first glimpse of seventy-eight neophyte dentists-chlorophyllic freshmen to you. Further digging revealed that this horde came forth from seventeen states. North Carolina led with twenty' representatives, nineteen sons, and one daughter. Georgia contributed only thirteen as her share. Twenty-one college degrees are scattered among them. Nine of the fellows came after surviv- ing the ordeal of matrimony. The fraternities, after a round of entertainment, dances to hay- rides, claimed fifty-seven of the frosh. The class death rate has been such that only three have withdrawn-net seventy-five. They produced thick plates and polished holes in them, carved egg-shaped bicuspids and off- center roots, flamed the loop and contaminated the media as those in the past so worthily did. Some have learned how to wield a hot spatula, how to recognize a fool proof question, how to mix plaster, and how to dissect at two and steak at six. lt is reported that some can even open their mail boxes and lockers the first twirl-trial. Though they made squatting porcelain cylinders, rocking dentures, porous plaster, and 'ffloatedu a few teeth, they have done their best. Your historian ran across Carlyle muttering that history is the essence of innumerable biog- raphies -so, do you recall: Higginbotham, the gentleman with the whistle- For the firs-s time in twenty years-ss . . . ' Orchid Brockington, Sweetpea'l Gunter, and 'AGolden Rod I-licks, as if from Esquire - not from Petty's page either. Roll Calll' Fox and his hat-one could actually see his ears. The Zymosf' group of gentlemen cast adrift in the dead of the night with a chair or two and a handful of silverware fKressD to land in an apartment with a cook. Qlncidentally they are always late to class, though living at the extreme distance of a couple hundred yards from the school.j Hull and Irwin taken suddenly ill on November hfteenth-confidentially, not from smoking cigars. VVhen summer was flushed with desire and hirth, This wild grain rejoiced in the crimson morn, And the seedlings took wing at each stray of the wind. But now that winter has come like a flood Of white scourge from the north, there is no friend XVith warmth to comfort. no flute-like song from the wood To solace the withered despair of the stalk. And so it mourns and lisps all through the day Like a disheveled mourner wailing at the gray Shrines of the dead. The Student Council is made up of two members of the Freshman Class, three members of the Sophomore Class, four members of the Junior Class, and five members of the Senior Class. All class presidents are members, and the President of the Student Body acts as President of the Student Council. Urdinarily, the Council meets once a month, although the President may call a meeting at any time. The principal functions of the Council are to take charge of student elections, stunt night, athletic tournaments, and to deal with infractions of the honor system. The Council also acts in the nature of an intermediary between faculty and students. Several improvements in the school are directly due to action by the Council. F. KI. Tooui. SFl'l't'f1II'j'. T reasurer 'THE P.XN-HELLENIC COUNCIL was organized in the Atlanta-Southern Dental College to regulate rush- ing of the Freshmen and for the purpose of handling all business that is of common interest to the fraternities. The sole purpose in doing this was to bring about closer harmony and friendship between the fraternities in the college. The Council is composed of two members from each fraternity, the fraternities being Delta Sigma Delta, Xi Psi Phi, Psi Omega and Alpha Omega. The annual Pan-Hellenic Formal Dance was given in honor of the Pledges at the Shrine Mosque. The affair was very successful and was enjoyed by all. This year the Council has drawn up some rules which have gone on record at the College office so that the council members of the future will have some definite regulations to be governed by. The Council has spent much time and thought on these rules, and we hope that they will be of some value to all fraternities in the future. The Council of 1939 hopes that the succeeding councils will maintain the friendship and harmony which has been established among the fraternities. JAMES A. McINTosH, Secretary. ,,,-V v V., Y . . A yellow trace Of light sifts across the pinewood lawn, And the forest windows light up like lamps That Come out in valley cottages at twilight. The hill and lake that have lain like lovers by night Under a summer moon awaken, and the camps Of marshland birds shake off the cold spell Of da1'k solitude, arising lightly into the pale Yellow splendor of the sun. The swampls black prayers fail To hring back the cool shadows of the nightg it is well For the sun comes over the east in festive pride, As a bride-groom in joy at the sight of the bride. GROVER C. HUNTER, JR wsmgeiisisl vt -f.: - GLAMOUR BOY FROM MUSEUM Y LAST LINES Go LITTLE Boox-we send you to the printer to be borng thence to the world that awaits you: for you were conceived in folly and nourished at the expense of deeper hopes .... The idle reader sees only that which lies on the surface,-what you seem to be. He disregards what lies beneath, under what circumstances you came to be, what you aspire to, and the handicaps you represent ..,. But, withal, you are a well-intentioned project, your many faults. and the abuse that will result there- from cannot alter the good intentions that went into your making, your only real virtue .... VVe, the staff, like to think of you as being what the class would want, and of ourselves as being the instruments of production of the record of the year. VVe gratefully acknowledge the invaluable aid from the following men and thank them sincerely: Dr. Scruggs for his helpful criticisms and suggestions: Dr. Coleman for his sound business advice: Dr. Harpole and Jimmy Jennings for their splendid art work? Klr, R. E. Norton of Norton's Studio. Bliss Clarissa Poteat and N112 Norman VVrigley of VVrigley's, and lair. Charlie Young of Foote and Davies Co., for their competent work, but most of all for the pleasant and gracious way in which they rendered their services. I have three personal ideals: One to do the dayls work well and not to bother about tomorrowg the second to act the Golden Rule as far as in me lies, toward my professional brethren and toward the patients committed to my care: and third, to cultivate such a measure of equanimity as will enable me to bear success with humility, the affection of my friends without pride, and to be ready, when the day of sorrow and grief comes, to meet it with the courage befitting a man. -SIR NVILLIAM Osman.
