Dedication The ATALANTA STAFF dedicates the 1960 ATA LANTA to the 1958-1959 Redwings basketball team. These Redwings brought more honor to themselves, the students of ACHS, and the people of Atlanta than most small schools and communities dare to dream of. Their brilliant record plus their exceptional cooperation, sportsmanship, and determination will be a luminous legend in the history of ACHS. Under the superb instruction of Coach Eldridge Doc Kinsey, the '58-'59 Redwings achieved a re- cord of 29 consecutive-wins as opposed to one loss and a flawless conference record. With practice, perseverance, and providence, the team sped from victory to victory, capturing first place honors in the Kickapoo'Conference Tournament, the Hartsburg-Emden Invitational Tournament, and the Regional Tournament in Lincoln. As a stupendous climax to this incredible season, the Atlanta Redwings journeyed for the first time in their history to the sectional Tournament in Springfield. There the team first met defeat--defeat only in the sense that the season was terminated. They were victorious in being representative of the Atlanta Student body, for they exhibited to the public the character, scholarship, and industry characteristic of the students at ACHS. To this epitome of talent and teamwork from ACHS, we proudly dedicate the 1960 ATALANTA. 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION. . . FACULTY.. CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS.. ACTIVITIES . . SPORTS. .. INDEX . 5 Mr. Winston L. Harwood, Principal and Superintendent of Atlanta High School. Foreword Co-operation in school work among students, parents, and teachers is the first requisite of a good educational program. The latter part of the word co-operation is operation . In other words, A action must be involved and action which is to produce worth-while results will usually entail a certain number of differences between people. The reconciliation of these differences without loss of principle is vital to co-operation. It is this type of pro- cedure which identifies progressive and constructive action as a means to real co-operation. Board Promoted ohool Welfare Striving for an efficient school on a balanced budget, the school board had a full time job. Many nights found the board members burning the midnight oil while discussing such problems as equipping the chemistry lab and pricing cheerleading uniforms. Not only were the needs for the current year considered, but the board spent a great deal of time in planning for the future of ACHS, namely the building of a new school. Virginia Kindred, school secretary, spent a busy year assisting the administra- tion and the students. L, As The Wheels Turn WINSTON L. HARWOOD Mr. Winston L. Jovial Sponsor of the Senior Class was Mr. Robert Mason, whose interest and guidance were greatly appreciated. eniors Prepared To Face Their Futures What will the future hold for me? This was a question which faced most of the seniors at one time or another during this past year. Will, it be college away from home? Or will it be a steady job? The responsibility of married life? A 2-year hitch in the service? Although each senior will face these particular questions in a different manner, all will cherish mem- ories of ACHS. Especially vivid will be memories of the long-awaited senior year. The joy of a senior was the misery of a freshman, when senior chefs baked a scrumptious cake and served it to the tortured Freshies with oysters and onions, gaining revenge for the ordeals experienced during their own initiation four years ago. Working together, the seniors sponsored an all-conference party, inviting 13 other schools as a tip- off to the '59-'60 basketball season. Another result of senior ingenuity and industry was their first place Homecoming float, Down By The Old Mill Stream, which featured running water. As early as October, thoughts of graduation filled their minds, as the class traveled to the photographer's for senior portraits. Then came the selection of announcements, name cards, and programs for Baccalaureate and Commencement. A gilded page in their history recorded memories of the junior-senior Prom and Banquet when two lucky seniors were crowned king and queen of the year's most festive occasion. The senior trip, although not so glamorous as the prom, also filled a page with happy memories. Baccalaureate and the night of Commencement composed the final chapter in the high school history of the Class of '60, as the soon-to-be-forgotten seniors received their diplomas with mixed emotions and bade farewell to ACHS to face their futures. Hard at work to fete the seniors with a spectacular prom and banquet, the juniors peddled popcorn, candy, and soda pop at the ball games and during the noon hour. Although the junior's candy was usually stale, their party, Winter Wonderland, was as fresh as their popcorn, being one of the most successful all-school parties of the year. Confronted with the difficult and exciting task of selecting their class ring, the juniors finally chose the ring which read 1961 from both top and bottom. Even though the class rings arrived a monthtlate, they proved to delight many of the junior's steadies. , The class of '61 experienced their busiest year as they prepared to fill the senior's shoes. 28 W ,YW H5 M r BEER is Q W K : ,W WWE? iw mg-g .' No school, no work, just fun, was the dream of most sophomores, and nothing could have depicted it more effec tively than the so homore's Homecoming float, Almost Heaven. Their third place creation boasted a closed school with the disappcgi ed scholars loafing in the school yard. M s s Es is BTN X is Bmgss . ss iss mars an mm is 1 H Bm' Us HW .xx was Y . Freshman Conformed To Their New Routine A class of 40 freshmen was welcomed to ACHS with the traditional initiation ceremonies. Attired in the latest styles with burlap bags, sunglasses, and onion necklaces, the initiates arrived on the scene for a day of trying tribulation. While the halls of Atlanta High echoed with the freshie's cry, I love the seniors! and reeked with the odor of onions, the freshies catered to the wishes of the seniors. The lipstick had just begun to wear off their faces when the initiates returned for an encore at the initiation party that night. Blindfolded and escorted by the seniors, the freshies were shocked into the ritual of the ceremony and walked over broken g1ass and earth worms with bare feet. Later that night, the seniors insisted on feeding the initiates clammy oysters, chocolate covered bees, green persimmons, cat eyes, and a cake iced with shaving cream and decorated with tooth paste. Freshman discovered that success in high school would take more than just passing the initiations pranks. They soon realized that co-operation was the key to success. That meant co-operation on the individual basis as well as co-operation on the part of the entire class working together for a purpose. During their first year, members of the class of '63 were active in sports, music, and other organi- zations. They entered a float in the Homecoming Parade and were honored by having the Freshman Qreen Candidate crowned Queen of the Fall Festival. One-fourth of the class made the first semester honor roll. These facts plus their talents and opti- mistic outlook indicate that the freshmen have conformed to their new routine and will be valuable assets to every department and organization in school. 34 K -cf' -, iv Gordon Baldock Hn if Marcia Barnes Dick Bicknell Bunny Brelsford John Combs Anna belle Graham Sandra Hinch fi. fwr-9 'MQW James Beck Charles Begolka Don Bullerman Gary Chaudoin A W Y Q , .4 'J Y Jaclde Compton Robert Dehart Robert Frantz John Hamilton Steve Harwood Guylene Hazelwood Carole Horn Cheryl Horn Larry Howen . f fir!
