40: ,Liembers of The ChrisTian Church in Georgia made Three aTTemst 'Veariy in This cenTury To esTablish a church- reIaTed college in This .. sTaTe. The firsT was Lamar College aT ClarksTon, Georgia, open from 4942 To 4945. Josephus Hopwood, founder of Milligan College and Virginia ChrisTian College, served as presidenT of The college, which failed because of insufficienT financial supporT. The second aTTempT was SouTheasTern ChrisTian College aT Auburn, Georgia, open from 4945 To 4924. John H. Wood became presidenT of This insTiTuTion when Dr. Hopwood was unable To assume leadership. Fires ThaT desTroyed The dormiTories and The heavy press of financial problems made iT necessary To close This insiTuTion. The Third insTiTuTion was ATIanTa ChrisTian College, where Judge and Mrs. T. O. HaThcock became The key leaders. Judge HaThcock had been associaTed wiTh The earlier efforTs and had gained considerable experience in This area. DeTermined ThaT no more properTy shouIdAbe IosT because of financial problems, he approached This new venTure in a conservaTive manner. One frame building was erecTed on properTy owned by The HaThoooks and a small faculTy assembled. UnforTunaTely, The school was barely under way when The greaT depression hiT and iT was impossible To raise supporT for The school. In 4930 The college suspended operaTion. The college reopened in 4937 on The HaThoook properTy. The firsT year There were six sTudenTs, and The faculTy consisTed of PresidenT and Mrs. George BonduranT. By The fall semesTer of 4940 There were forTy-one sTudenTs and a few parT-Time professors. In 4947 George BonduranT resigned as presidenT and was replaced by Orvei Crowder, who served unTiI 4955. James C. Redmon acoepTed The posiTion of leadership and held The posT unTiI 4978. Paul K. Carrier assumed The posiTion in 4978. WhaT began as o sTudenTs in one small wooden sTruoTure has grown inTo over 200 sTudenTs housed in many handsome brick buildings. BuT The goals of The pasT - eaucaTion and evangelism - are sTiII The goals of The fuTure. HISTORY
