Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1976 volume:

There was a time When once upon a time seemed timevand-a-half away when the future danced before us illusive mistress and dangled promises of intrigue before our eyes . . . when the years ahead promised de- lightful fantasies adven- tures into the marvelous world of grown up . . talking in big words and driving real cars and wearing high-heeled shoes - not just for make- believe, either. V 1 A -Ei'iQEEEEVHEEEEFIEIE- Then suddenly, we payed full admission to the movies. The school books got bigger while the print got smaller, and we were telling our younger brothers and sister about Santa Claus, while we yearned to be able to believe in him again. Fm thirteen, mother e I'm a teen-ager now! Time outs e Half-times, Times for a change e time to go home. But one day, home is' not there. And time changes everything, Everything except ourselves. We can fulfill our hopes by working and serving through the various organizations we have on campus. There are clubs for every interest, but the main thrust of each is service. Through the giving ofoux time, we serve our school as examples and witnesses. We serve others by helping and sharing with them; we serve ourselves by learning and growing to be better and more confident workers for Christ. 61 Mr. Sweamgin e Sponsor, Faith Mims, Kay Rice, Renee Payne, Sharon Bradley, Patti Ramlow, Amelia Thompson, Candy Banks, Sammy Warren, Dwight Haymon, Joey Westbrook, Benny Smith, Ron'hie Voss, Diana Brettschneider; Not pictured: Cheryl Wylds, Eddie Peterson One of the fundamental laws of nature is that man must have someone on whom to blame his problems a a scapegoat which seems legitimate enough to satisfy both himself and those who listen. For somewhat obvious reasons, the ACC Student Council has often become just such a scapegoat for the student body. Perhaps this comes often from a misunderstanding of the council's function. It is not a student government, but rather a committee in charge of the oversight of the spiri- tual life of the campus. In this area, no one can doubt the council's endeavors to fulfill its task. The council plans and oversees practically all campus student activities, as well as distributing the money for the annual, basketball teams, and other clubs which request funds. This past year the council has aimed for activities Which would provide more in- dividual involvement, feeling that getting to know one another is a major key to developing the spiri- tual awarness on campus. The results of this conn cem have been seen in such activities as the C05- tume Carnival and Fall Flop. These activities were geared to promoting group involvement and indi- vidual participation. Comprised of two repre- sentatives from each class, plus five officers and the advisor, Mr. Swearngin, the council is always open to suggestions from the student body as to needed changes in school functions or helpful additions to campus life. Considering the fact that this organiza- tion exists as a service to the student body, and that it is always willing to listen and consider sugges- tions in light of the good of the entire student body, the practice of using the coucil as a scapegoat a while obvious - seems hardly legitimate. Faith Mims, President Diana Brettschneider, Vice-President Kay Rice, Treasurer 63 may The Annual Staff is composed of a variety of individuals from different backgrounds and interests who come together to produce a book i not just any book, but a remembrance and reminder of a year gone by. The book must meet certain standards and guidelines, and must take the responsibility of blending together a year's worth of activities into a unified whole. Through a lot of hard work, late nights with some hassle includedi and a. little bit of dedication, the Harvester is produced. Associate Editor ' ' . .turgill ' Phou 'mphcr '- Photographer 65 Some things just have to be done. The dishes have to be washed, the grass has to be mowed e and order must be kept in the dorms. So, to fulfill this awesome task, a group of students have shunned all hopes of popularity among their peers and accepted the call to ACC Dorm Council. These unselfish souls have dedicated themselves to the enforcement of the rules concerning dorm life, even though it means trying to convince the students to obey those rules lhow gauchel and taking streams of abuse from certain parties who, for some reason or another, seem above having to obey. But all is not door- locking and spying for curfew-breakers. Dorm Council also works diligently in preparing periodical dorm and interdorm devotions, and attempts to instill in the minds of students the spiritual obligations we have in keeping the rules laid down for us. But perhaps Dorm Council's toughest job is making us believe certain things about the rules; like, rules were made for our own good e- and made to be obeyed. But preparation is not accomplished only in the classroom. Preparation comes from involvement. This is the by-word of the ACC Missions Council. Since its beginnings in the mid-sixties, the Missions Council has worked year-round planning Missions Emphasis Week, supervising the Faith-Promise program, and working generally to promote Missions awareness on campus. These students spend much time studying various missions efforts and deciding the various delega- tions of the faith promise funds. The Missions Council works to challenge the student body with the obligation we have to take Christ to all the world. Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. lMatt. 20: 26,27 NASl How soon we forget. How soon we become so involved with ourselves and forget our mission to the people e our mission not only to seek and save, but to serve. But there are those around who remind us of our obligations and inspire us to the work ahead. Such is Rotaract. Directly related to the Rotary club, Rotaract is an organization which stresses individual service in a Christian atmo- sphere. The club has made its presence known by bringing in outside speakers from time to time, sponsoring the annual Faculty-Student basketball game, and holding Christmas parties for the children of ACC and Christian City. But they work mostly behind the scenes, quietly supplying Where needs are prevalent. They tutor children from Christian City, hold Spiritual Emphasis meetings at Boy's Clubs in the area, and teach retarded children to swim at the local YMCA. Sponsored by Mr. McKinney, Rotaract is a young club with a promis- ing future. Rotaract proclaims no membership re- strictions 0r dues. It only asks for those who are willing to work and want to become individually involved in service to fellow men. After all, com- ments president Joe Huxford, This is what ministry is all about. 68 l, :N - '.1 V . r r. um I! ll hi? The question of the nature of the Chris- tian citizen is one which has been dis- cussed and debated over many years and many ACC lunches. But while some were sitting talking, others were handing together to take action. The Civitan club of ACC is the result of one group's con- cern for Christian civic activities. In only its second year, Civitan showed ACC that it exists to serve and would serve in every possible way. The contributions of this club have ranged from the lowly task of cleaning up the bulletins after chapel, to inviting such distinguished lecturers as Newt Gingrich, professor at West Georgia College, who lectured for us on the future. Under the capable leadership of advisor Donald Jeanes and president Bob McGuire, Civitan spent this year on the look-out for further ways to aid in the civic affairs of the school and community. She's a young organization, but the students of ACC can look forward to many substantial contributions from out Civitan club as it grows and develops on the ACC campus. That first sorority on the ACC campus was Delta Theta. Taking the initial letters of the Greek words for Glorifying God, Delta Theta Sorority has worked ever since its beginning to prove this a worthy title. Social involvement - what we call fellowship - is a major part of the Christian's life, and Delta Theta attempts to provide the campus with the social programs and op- portunities for interpersonal relations which are so vital to Christian morale. The girls of this club have worked closely with Delta Kappa Delta and Sigma Iota Chi in providing us with Homecoming, Fall Flop, Spring Fling, and various other social functions. Their contributions could be listed and expounded ad infinitum, but perhaps the greatest testimony to Delta Theta's contributions is the fact that' a group of girls met in the spring of 1975 with a prayer and a dream. Becky Bradford e President; Diana Brettschneider e Historian; Beth Williams e Secretary; Carolyn Walz - Vice-President; Jo-Ann Benson - Treasurer. ZIX In the spring of 1975, a handful of ACC girls met together with a prayer and a dream. The prayer was for greater opportunities to share Christ's love with each other and those around them. The dream was a new sorority which would aid them in this goal. The answer to both was Sigma Iota Chi. Don- ning the epigraph Sisters in Christ, these girls were joined by others last fall in an endeavor to promote the ideals of unity and love among not just themselves, but all those with whom they come in contact. These girls have made every effort to establish themselves as an organization present to serve, at the disposal of those in need. They have worked in close contact with Delta Theta in planning such activities as homecoming. They delight in working with their sisters in Delta Theta, feeling that two smaller, wellorganized clubs working cooperatively can accomplish greater things than one larger conglomerate. Where Sigma Iota Chi has made its usefullness most fully manifest is at Lakewood Manor, where they have instituted an Adopted Grandparents program. Each of the girls has someone whom she visits, even taking them out to dinner or entertaining them in the home. Not forsaking the importance of group fellowship, the sorority holds bi-weekly meetings consisting of devotions, business, and special programs. A bright future awaits this organization, and ACC will certainly profit from her presence. For this reason many people have questioned the jus- tification for such an organization ori the ACC campus. But in the past few years, Delta Kappa Delta has proved all prophecies of party spirit and unchristian behavior false. Working diligeritly to promOte spiritual and social growrh on campus, Delta Kappa Delta has con- stantly strived to provide ACC with many opportunities to share in its activi- ties and endeavors to serve the Lord more fully. They have helped in the sponsoring of such enjoyable activities as Sneak Day festivities, Fall Flop, the never-to-be-forgotten watermelon bust, and Spring Fling. President Mike Waers states that, though the fraternity has grown and expanded, it has never yet lived up to its full potential. He hopes in the future the men of the club will strive to serve the Lord and the needs of the campus in every area in which they are able. When confronted with the situation of some objection to the idea of a frater- nity on campus, Mike didn't seem too concerned. He commented, Christianity is about brotherhood, and that's what our fraternity is about. k The students of Atlanta Christian College entertain many angels un- aware. Among these unheralded blessings are women students, wives of students, and faculty wives and women who comprise the Women of Atlanta Christian College. This group is not one of closed membership, but one in which all eligible women are invitied to the monthly pro- grams. These programs, follow yearly themes, designed to benefit the women in areas that Will aid their efforts as pteachet's wives and set- vants of the Kingdom. WACC has each year sponsored the convocation reception in the fall and planned at least one major contribution to the school. But its greatest contribution is the aid and instruction it offers its dedicated soldiers of the Word. Then it really will be happening. The future really will be just a step away. More and more we realize what has been evident all along e the past is gone; the future is the only reality. How will we react next year? Will we greet the future with open arms, or will we cower into the shade and comfort of the past? Dear Lord, help us. We need you so much now. How will we face tomorrow? 104 hite - Pres dent :42, Cindy Gowan Secretary Sharon Bradley Phil Cages Kathy Chamness John Corson Lee Amos Byron Davidson Rick Blakeney Jill Davis Charlie Blanton Kathy Donovan Becky Bradford Cindy Gowan 105 Dwight Haymon Lanny Hemmings Mike Hilley Joyce Hodge Greg Hoover Tommy Howard Phil Hudson Leslie James 106 Bruce Kridle Barbara Patrick Ted Manning Lionel Marmolejo 11:33:23: Ken May Joe Risse Charles McElroy Lowell Moore David Morris Hensel Morris 107 David Simpson Doug Smith David Terriaco Jerry Thompson Bob Ritchie Sandra Ritchie Bud Robinson J ames Sennett 108 Cheryl Wylds Phil Zook Connie White James White Charleen Waters Frank Watkins Denms Trall Mike Waers - I r. i z ; E .L A. 109 Now we belong. Last year was rough, but now we're ready to get down to business. Wehve learned the ropes and, well, things are really looking up. Courses get more interesting all the time, the Bible is really opening up to us, and school has really become home. We still long a little for the past, but now we realize the future is going to be even better. There's a world to be told about Jesus Christ, and wehre just the ones to tell them. But, in the midst of this bright and bold confidence, we realize we are still inadequate. We learn even more to cling to the Lord and trust His guiding hand. In fact, the biggest reason for our confidence is our ever- increasing knowledge of our Father and how He loves and cares for us. As long as we serve Him, the world has yet to see what we can accomplish! 110 Billy Rowe ' Chaplain t Troy Baker Jo Ann Benson Gary Bordelon John Braswell Tom Brennan Eddie Brittain Steve Buird Paul Chappell Carol Click Roy Crowe Lanny Dameron 111 112 Robin Davis Sandy Delegal Chuck.Dodd Bobby Dosh Debbie Duggan Debbie Estep Carolyn Fawley Renee Felts Elsa Fernandez David Fjeran Pam Godfrey Ann Goldsberry Ed Greenway Wanda Hardie Barry Hayes Pam Hopson Cam Huxford Joe Huxford Vickie Jones Tommy Lee Wanda Lemons John Linthicum Beverly Ludke Bob McGuire Phyllis McKinney Wilford Minton Nancy Moser Bob Oliver 113 114 Steve Randall Robert Raynor Janet Reese Mark Reinke Kay Rice Cecil Ross Billy Rowe John Sennett Greg Sinclair Frank Sturgill Amelia Thompson Bob Walk Wilbur Wallace Sammy Warren Beth Williams Greg Wilson Diane Wood Danny Yates 115 Just last spring we were Seniors. Just a few months ago We were completely at ease, secure in the knowledge that we knew what was going on e we ran the show. But now, times have changed. We stand on the threshold of the future. When I grow up has arrived. And it's frightening. This is that time oflife when the perspective changes. Before, it was always the present with a view to the past. We were secure in our past and completely at home with the present. But now the past is gone. The restful confidence has been shut off into what must forever be When I was young. We now view the present with our glances forward - out there. And suddenly the present loses its glamour. The rays of past experience are shut out by the shadows of the future. What lies ahead? The next few years Will change our entire lifestyles. We face the future uncertainly, yet with an unexplainable confidence e Here's where we can prove ourselves . . .! 116 h - . , Charleen Buffalow Treasurer Patti Graham Secretary Danny Abel Kevin Adam Lynne Aleshire Ronald Altice Candy Banks R.C. Ga. 30548 36701 30344 30344 125 Time counts for us. It tallies the scars and the heartaches, combined with the good times and fun times, And computes our recollections. We can't ignore it, or stop it, or alleviate it. We must reckon with it, plan for it, deal with it on its own terms. 128 129 130 56qugov Tov kdgov. But time is not the last force. We are not totally forever at its mercy. For God lives above time. He does not consider it of ultimate importance. He exists beyond time to all times and no time. God is in whom we trust, The same yesterday, today, and forever. He sees the future w He is there. He sees the past we can only remember. He walks with us in the present, advising as He views the road ahead, teaching from the hard paths left behind, providing security in the midst of uncertain turmoil. And Time, indifferent, unrespecting, relentless, is suddenly stripped ofits awe-inspiring dominion in the light of the Blessed Son. 151 $meW - 50M.
