They have always been the largest class, but the main difference is that they will be the first class to graduate from Geneseo High School. However, this did not seem to dampen their spirits, and they showed this good attitude throughout the year by raising money for the Jr.-Sr. Prom. A N 1 z AT IGA'S Last “tiger” yearbook staff The yearbook may have a little different look this year as you may have already noticed. With the changing of companies and without much experience, it developed into quite a task constructing a yearbook. But with help from the journalism class the book started to take form as they say the pages fell as they may. Close-up and N.H.A. active The Atkinson chapter of Close-Up had only two members this year, but those two members were very glad to be a part of that organization. Especially when they were able to take advantage of a trip to Washington, D.C. for a week. They took in most all the sights, including a very poignant visit to the Viet Nam Veterans' Memorial. Dirk Christian and Matt Culbertson had many interesting stories afterwards. The Atkinson chapter of the National Honor Society was also small. Three students received the honor of induction into this prestigious organization. They were Amy Sorenson. Melinda Batzkiel. and Amy Claeys. 29 Great year for A.H.S. F.F.A. In the fall, they took first place in Livestock Judging with Matt Culbertson the high individual. They also took first in the Farm Business Contest. They were State Horse Judging Champions as Mike Klockenga took high honors, as well as first in the Great Lakes National Horse Judging Contest. They were also champions at the National Western Stock Show Youth Livestock Judging Contest at Denver, Colorado, and took first place in all six Reasons Contests they entered. Great Job!! They kept the crowd in each game and gave the team a feeling of being winners. Though the band this year had no high school students, it did function as a high school organization. The band played at ballgames, concerts, and accompanied the high school play. They gave excellent showings at all these events. 36 Top and bottom left: The band accompanies the play “Mr. Crane of Sleepy Hollow. Bottom right: Mr. Johnson leads his troops. Merry melodies The Chorus, directed by Mr. Johnson, performed a Christmas program for the Atkinson Woman’s Club in December. Because of lack of numbers and enthusiasm, the 1987 football season was cut short soon after it was started. On this page are pictures of what could have been a successful football season. Tigerettes enjoy The Atkinson Tigerettes ended their 1987 volleyball season at 18-8, the best record in A.H.S. history. The girls' highlights include a third place finish in the Indian Valley Conference, first place in the Atkinson Invitational, and third place in the Aledo Dragon Classic. The senior-dominated squad played together as a team, according to coach Paul Waggoner, which enabled them to compete against taller teams. Kathy Gilbraith earned top spiker and blocker honors, while Tricia Roman had the highest serving percentage. Gretchen Carmichael and Denise Jiles were top setters. Kathy was also chosen to the All-Conference First Team. Also noteworthy were Amy Claeys, Amy Van Opdorp, Amy Sorenson, Melinda Batzkiel, and Denise Jiles for receiving Academic All Conference recognition. Standing left to right: D Jiles, S. Roman. T. Successful once again The Lady Tigers had a winning season, finishing with a record of . The numbers were low but the spirits were high. They shocked many people with their ability to play a tough defense and a disciplined offense. With a second place finish in the Indian Valley Conference, the Lady Tigers won the Annawan Regional, beating Riverdale and Prophetstown. The trip to Champaign was far away, but in the minds of many it was beginning to brew again. The fun was abruptly ended in the Sectional, where the girls lost to Milledgeville in the frist game, ending the final season of Lady Tiger basketball. 47 J.V. boys enjoy good season Far Right: Go get 'em boys. They also garnered second place honors in the Artkinson Invitational Fresh-Soph Tournament. The Tigers, led by Todd, Neil, and Jason, played well together, enabling them to beat teams with more overall talent. Mike and Wade rounded out the starting five for most games, though A.J., Kris, and Justin also started at least once. Todd and Wade led in rebounding, with Neil and Wade being the most consistent defensively. Todd and Jason set the Tigers’ scoring pace. Coach Waggoner praised the team for striving to improve throughout the whole year.” 49 Tigers end history with The 87-'88 basketball year was anything but normal. The Tigers once again had a new coach, there was the addition of the 3 point shot and the pressure of ending the history of AHS basketball victoriously. The team started out slowly but gradually progressed with a 3 game winning streak, to prove that they could be competitive with almost any team they faced. Although their record was 5-17, the team never gave up. They kept their spirits high and showed their pride by winning the last home game in the Atkinson gym, in front of a packed house, which made the town more than proud. The girls' track team at A.H.S. this year had only five members, but those five worked very hard. It was not easy going to each meet knowing they had little or no chance of winning, but the girls gave it their all and got respect from everyone they competed against. In the Indian Valley Conference Meet, they were ninth out of 13 teams, which showed they were not outclassed. There. Lisa was third in the 800 m. run and fifth in the 1600 m., Amy Sorenson was fourth in the 3200 m., and Jodi VanDamme was fifth in the 200 m. dash. Sherbyn paces boys’ track Neal Sherbyn led the Tiger tracksters this year. Up to the time he went to state, he had not been beaten in the 100,200,400, or 800 m. runs. At state, he got second in the 200 m., representing himself and A.H.S. very well. Neal was not alone, however. Other track members were Mike VanDeVelde, Todd Welveart, Justin VanOpdorp, Scott Welveart, Clay Carmichael, Drew Murphy, Neil Simon, and Jon Obrecht. J.V. But with the help of some concerned students and Mr. Carr the dance was arranged. The Student Council filled the FHA vacancy and was the co-supporter of the dance. The theme for this year’s dance was Hollywood Nights. The gym was decorated in the traditional style with red, white, and black colors. Magnum Lighting and Sound supplied the music. Drew Murphy and Denise Jiles reigned over the Sweetheart Court as King and Queen. Although the crowd was small, a good and memorable time was had by all, during what was to be the last Sweetheart Dance in the history of AHS. “Mr. Crane’’ a success Atkinson High School’s last musical, Mr. Crane of Sleepy Holiow , was performed on April 29 to a large crowd. A take-off of Hawthorne's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , the piece offered comedy, music and romance, staples of any good production. Mr. Johnson and the cast staged a definite success. Top: Dirk sheds some light on the subject. Middle: Keep 'em in line, Mike. Bottom: Play it again. Mr. J. Top: The squeaky wheels get the grease. Middle: The cast is all ears when Mr. J. speaks. The theme was Never Say Goodbye' ' which seemed like a perfect end to the 1988 school year. It was held at the Moline Holiday Inn and the colors were blue and silver. The Juniors did a fantastic job of decorating and making the Prom a huge success. Top: And who said that there wasn't any good looking guys at prom? Middle left: Tricia's better side. Middle right: Coool. Dude!! Bottom left: Dennis, can we go home now? My sunburn hurts! Bottom right: Come on Jodi maybe someday Joe will come around. Top left: Tricia really cuts loose at Prom. The last class graduated from Atkinson High School on May 29, 1988, amid the joy of a new beginning and not a few tears for what had come to an end. Densie Jiles and Tricia Roman spoke to the large audience as representatives of their class of 16 and Lisa Bickett and Liz VanHerzeele sang two very appropriate songs. Among other awards, Gretchen Carmichael received the Susan Carmichael Memorial Scholarship and Joe VanVooren received the Laura Fulton Petersen Memorial Scholarship. Whatever the future holds for the students of Atkinson, we know the memories will be forever sweet. 70 I U CJUL.I SUCI IIN IS ■ Top: Denise and Mike receive the American Legion Award.
