ATKINSON HIGH SCHOOL “HOME OF THE TIGERS” 109 SOUTH STATE STREET ATKINSON ILLINOIS 61235 THE TIGER VOLUME 43 1984-1985 “DREAMS COME TRUE AT AHS!” 1984-85 Tiger Shelly Craine Editor-In-Chief Amy VanDeVelde Layout Editor Beth Snodgrass Typist Mike Klockenga Photographer Stacy Disterhuft Sports Editor Debbie Noord Business Manager Mr. Mark Hepner Advisor Dreams can ccome true is something we have all learned here at A.H.S. Hold on to your dreams for somehow they will come true. Dreams are expectations for what is to come. They are secrets that only you alone can conquer and believe in. Dreams are also goals. And you alone know of it’s existence. Dreams are what we all should have and believe in, for when there is nothing left, for anyone, yourself, there is still a dream waiting to be conquered and waiting for you, alone to conquer it. 4 ACADEMICS New Buses, New Computers The enrollment for the Atkinson schools for 1984-84 year was as follows; in the grade school: 97 girls and 108 boys and in the high school; 42 girls and 46 boys for a grand total of 293 students, 84 in the high school. This year the school built a new bus barn behind the school. The buses had been privately owned by Bert Swanson, however, after his death his family decided not to continue the business. This school decided to purchase the buses and build new facilities for them behind the school. Also, this year the second floor of the old section of the high school, the old gym and the old girls locker room were closed off and some of the rooms were shuffled around. The old history room is how the business room. The old Home Ec. room is the history room, and the Home Ec. kitchen is now the room where they have Home Ec. classes. The girls locker room is now where the grade school boys formally had they’re locker room. The school bought seven new computers to expand our computer department. There were three new teachers on our staff this year. Replacing Bruce Jefferson in the Science Department is Joe Iorio. Anita Behrens took the place of Marcia Trager in the English department, but had to leave because she adopted a baby. So, Cathy Owano took her place. A final addition to the school was a new track around the football field. Freshmen Visit The freshman class started off the beginning of the year very well according to the seniors. Freshmen all played their duties well for initiation. Later on in the year they visited the Illinois Heneppin Power Plant with their physical science teacher, Mr. Iorio. The Freshmen’s “Roast the Eagles” float for Homecoming was good, but their skit was better. They enjoyed roasting marshmallows and telling scary stories with the help of their class advisor, Mrs. Hewitt. They did profitably well selling fragranced soap. They ended the year all anxiously awaiting their next year as sophomores. During their “Eaglebusters!” skit, Matt Lawrence, the eagle, did a good job scaring grandma, Robin Johnson, while patiently waiting for the Eaglebusters, our Tigers. By selling popcorn this year the sophomores, raised money for their class. Ending the year they all wait for their oncoming junior year. v ■ Upper Right: Sophomore class officers left; president, Scott Musich; treasurer, Derek Welveart; advisor, Wilma Hewitt; Seceratart, Amy VanDeVelde; vice-president, Mike Sturtewagen. Juniors Raise As everyone knows, the junior class spends most of their time raising money for prom. They also spent a lot of time planning for Prom. They had a big taco stand during Atkinson’s Centennial and raised quite a bit of money. They also sold prescriptions to the Athkin-son-Annawan News. This year, though, the junior class was prepared for Prom costs before the last minute. They had quite a bit of money raised from their freshmen and sophomore years. There were many academically outstanding students in the Senior class. They led the rest of the high school the whole year. It is the hope of the administration at A.H.S. that the Senior class this year has set an example for further Senior classes. They took great care in choosing their class motto, song, colors, and flower. They wanted to make sure that they fit with the personality of their class, and they sure did end up picking the right things. They go right along with the personality of the class of 1985. From the complaints and laziness of Stacy Disterhoft and Amy VanDeVelde over Mr. Hepner’s remarks of, “Redo this and redo that!”, the year seemed to be full of griefs and heartaches. Then there was Shelly Craine’s “totalitarian” rule and Ronelle Floming’s ar-guements with Mr. Hepner. Despite all of this, it turned out to an interesting and adventurous yearbook season. Also, there was devoted help from the only Senior this year, Beth Snodgrass. They all ended the year anxiously awaiting the oncoming year. 24 A Totally Awesome Yearbook Opposite page: Top: Yearbook staff; left to right: first advisor, Mr. Hepner; Michelle Kirby; Darcy Verbeck; Editor, Shelly Craine; Sports editor, Stacy Dister-hoft; Back row: Ronelle Floming; Layout editor, Amy VanDeVelde; Photographer, Mike Klock-enga; Michelle Naugle; Business manager, Debbie Noord; Copy editor. Wins High The Future Farmers of America of the 1984-85 year had a very busy and agricultural year. All their judging of meat, dairy, soil and livestock, sectionals, and Midcontinent in Champaign turned out successfully. The FFA week’s most successful and announced event was the Atkinson High School petting “zoo”. No! Not the students! Real live animals! Everything from chickens to cows to BrentMi’s dog “Blackey”, who livened up the place. There was special thanks given to the FFA for sponsoring this years Sweetheart Dance. They ended the year with the FFA Banquet. They had dinner and then gave awards to ‘honorary students’. Top: Steve Sherbeyn trying to decide whether or not to get on Kale’s steer. We had a presentation from a lady who lived in Saudi Arabia. Then we watched the new FHA officers come into the year. The FHA members also helped serve refreshments at various PTC meetings. To help the funds they had a bake and craft sale at the bank and to pay dues this year the members sold cook books. They also did their share with concession stands for both football and basketball games. So, overall the FHA turned out as a good year. r.C. The cheerleaders led a few pep assemblies and cheered at many games as usual. They also made home-made pizzas and delivered them as a fund raiser along with working at the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast. With the money they raised they bought new varsity basketball uniforms and new poster paints. They worked hard to keep school spirit high at AHS. Dolieslager- had quite an experience. They went to Capitol Hill where they met Lane Evans, our Congressman. They also got to talk to the Press Secretaries of the Illinois Senators, Paul Simon and Allan Dixon. They sat in on a session of the House of Representatives where the issue of the MX was discussed. They were also able to listen to a court case that was on trial at the time they were there. The four went to a lot of seminars, but there were five main seminars where they learned about what goes on in the National government. There were also many memorials. They saw Jefferson Memorial, The Vietnam Vetrans Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the Iwo Jima Monument were a few of them. On their free day they went to Georgetown where they went to the University and did other fun things. To raise money for the big trip to D.C., The Close-Up students ran several fun raising projects. The biggest of these was a chili supper. Upper Right: Michelle checks out Scott’s cooking ability. Right: Roger sits and does nothing, as usual. In Search Of History The History Club was just formed during the 1984-85 school year, and anyone was welcome to join. There were events planned for every month including the Trivial Pursuit tournament on the last day of school before our Christmas vacation, field trips taken to the Civil War Re-enactment where they totally re-enacted the Civil War Battle of Belmont, Missouri (including uniforms, authentic weapons, and tents). They also went to Galena where they visited Grant’s home, toured various shops, went to Chestnut Hill and the Alpine Slide. In the Spring they took a trip to Springfield. Athletic Club, The Athletic Club usually had fund raisers, but this year they just participated at games by taking stats. Student Council did their annual job of making a successful Homecoming. The Atkinson Band dwindled to thirteen with only one of them a high school student. The High School Chorus had six members. They did well at an I.M.E.A. contest. Michelle Naugle, Debbie Noord, Stacy Disterhoft, and Shelly Craine did well with their solos. Student Council Athletic Club: Row 1: Mr. Shinkevich, Advisor; B. Moens, Pres.; C. Johnson, V. On The Job! 36 Atkinson Annawan Rivalry The 1984-85 AHS Football team played exceptionally well not letting game losses get them down. The team and fan effort helped AHS out a great deal. Leading the effort to keep spirits up were the cheerleaders and the helping towns people. Also, of course, Brent-Mi’s arrousing “BREAKDOWN which raised up the teams spirit to defeat the other team. The team wouldn’t have made it as far as it did if it wasn’t for our aggressive coaches: Stacy Bandy, Joe Iorio, and Gary Calsyn. They took great time and effort into planning schemes and plays to successfully defeat the other teams. The high-light of the season was the fierce rivalry between Annawan and Atkinson. The mood of the game was set when Tim Lawrence sort-of wandered through Annawan’s hoop. Annawan saught revenge by needlessly running the score up to rediculous proportions. In spite of everything the Atkinson Tigers stuck it out to the end, with the exception of the last 19 seconds. Even though the football season was rough it is memorable to all. 38 Highlight Football Season! Opposite Page; Upper Right Coach Bandy does some “field” surgery on Brent Moens. Middle; Front Row: T. ' —1 AHS Volleyball Team Wins The 1984-85 Volley-Ball team did quite well in spite of low numbers. The junior-varsity ended up second in the Indian Valley conference while the varsity went on to win the Atkinson Invitational. Most agreed that the biggest game of the season was when the J.V. girls beat Ohio one of the top rated teams. Had Atkinson gone on to beat Western, AHS would have ended up first in the conference. The J.V. girls over all won ten of its games while only two were lost. Meanwhile the varsity ended up with a 4-8 season. Because of low numbers, Coach Heidi Hamer was forced to bring up most of the junior varsity squad. There were only two seniors on the team this year. Jodi Obrecht and Dawn Kirby. Then the girls hosted the IHSA regional tournament. Also they participated in the IVC conference tournament at LaMoille. In addition to there great playing they attended a workshop (camp) here at the high school last summer. Atkinson Invitational Opposite Page; Upper Right: Audrey Sherbeyn struggles to save the ball. The team gave special thanks to their new coach, Joe Iorio, for his effort during all practices and games. The team had three seniors this year: Bob Ericson, Troy Minnaert, and Bruce VanHerzeele. All played well under the support of fans of all ages including Mr. Iorio’s daughter, Natasha. Now the team hopes for a better season next year. Boys Win Invitational The 84-85 basketball season has been a successful one for the Fresh-Soph Tigers. Under the guidance of a new coach, Joe Iorio, they achieved a record of 12 wins and 7 losses. They started with a four game loosing streak, and a five game winning streak. Though fans were scarce and cheerleaders few, they supported each other and worked well as a team. The highlight of the year was beating Annawan 49-38 and clenching the championship title of the Atkinson Fresh-Soph Invitational, which was the first time in the ten year history of the tourney that the host team won it. The Fresh-Soph girls had to pull double-duty on several occasions, playing both their game and then again during the varsity game. Even after the season was over, the work continued. Coach Heidi Hamer kept them working out on the weight machine and the gym, keeping their skills sharp for the 1985-86 season. Left: Kathy Gilbraith charges an opponent. New Coach And Under This year the Varsity girls basketball team did fairly well under their new coach Heidi Hamer. There were not very many upper classmen to lead the team, but the team still did very well with a lot of help from underclassmen. Val Wancketdid exceptionally well this season by scoring her 1,000th point, as a sophomore. The girls worked well together and made the team worth watching. Though their hopes of going to state were lost when they lost to Erie by one point in the Regionals, the girls still did their best and finished the season with a good record. 46 Classmen Lead Tigerettes Opposite Page Top: Coach Hamer instructs the Tigerettes. Two main factors for this, were the many broken records and new cindered track. The track was built by volunteers and supported by the Atkinson Booster Club. Coach Bandy said the track has really helped. Atkinson held two track meets at home. This year two conference records were broken. One was broken by the two mile relay team, consisting of Robert Ralph, Tom Patton, Scott Sorenson, and Chad Johnson, beating the old record by 10 seconds. The other was the 800 meter run, broken by Chad Johnson, with a time of 2:01.7. In other conference action, Scott Sorenson placed first in the mile, Robert Ralph placed 5th in the mile, Dennis Jensen won the conference pole vault, and Steve Nelson placed fifth in the high jump. With the eagerness of the team and plenty of practice, the 1984-1985 girls track team made effective use of the new track. Even with the few track members, Atkinson had an outstanding year. Mrs. Dolieslager worked tracksters hard, and, succeeded putting one of the girls, Val Wanket, in the state competition. In addition, Lisa Bicket broke three of the schools records this year. This earned her the Most Improved Award at the Atkinson High School Athletic Banquet. Also at the banquet, they handed out many awards to Atkinson’s track team. This year, the girls track squad did an outstanding job. Upper Right: 1985 Girls Track Squad, Row 1: Lisa Bickett, Darcy Verbeck, Shelly Craine. SPECIAL EVENTS Freshmen “Cluck” Their When everyone arrives at school for the first day there is a tension in the air. For freshmen, there is good reason ... they must face initiation at A.H.S. They are not worried about new rules, classes, or responsibilities, their concern is over what degree of humiliation they will face from the Seniors. “What will they do to us?”, “Why does it have to be us?”, “How horrible will it be?” — These are some of the questions that are going through their minds. When the time finally arrives to do the tasks it’s not as bad as they feared. Initiation turns out to be a time to have some fun and be wild, weird, and crazy. One of those tasks given to the freshmen was to bring food for the Seniors to eat during lunch. This included brownies, cookies, chips, almost everything one could think of that’s not good for the human body! The first day the girls were picked up at their houses at 6 a.m. They got to eat donuts and have juice at the park. Then the rest of the day they served as slaves for the Seniors. When they came as chickens one morning it was quite a sight to see! The last day they pertrayed the image of the freshman — the baby of the group. They also ate the food fit for the image. “Quite tasty!” , one of them said in total sarcasm. But, in three years the Class of 1988 will have its revenge. Upper Right: The freshmen girls show their version of the “chicken” mating call! Middle Right: Duck, Duck, Duck, ........... Goose!” exclaims Stacy. It’s roaring flames arrived two days after the fans had gathered around it to cheer. Better late than never. When everyone reached the school for “Tiger Night” they were ready to see some entertainment. There was a roar of laughter from the audience when the teachers did their skit with Clara Peller, from the Wendy’s commercials, portrayed by Mrs. Hewitt. Then the parents of the court did a skit which got quite a reaction from the audience. It showed what the court would be like in about 25 years. The theme of Homecoming this year was “eagle Busters” and “eagle Busters” A.H.S. students were. The Tigers won the football game with ease, 50-0. It was one of the first cold, very cold, nights, but the fans kept on cheering the Tigers on. Wyanet walked away in total defeat. The dance was enhanced by the all familiar band “Harliquin”. The atmosphere was perfect for the court as they were introduced. The reigning King and Queen were Jodi Obrecht and Brent Moens. Upper Right: Morey runs for the touchdown. Play, Pizza And Pursuit Get The Christmas spirit started out in Atkinson High School with the Christmas play on December 1, 1984. This year the play was about Hansel and Gretel. Their stepmother sends them out to get firewood and they get lost. The father realizes the mother meant to loose them and he sends the mother away. The children come upon a gingerbread house, but don’t realize it’s owned by the witch. The witch captures them and fattens Hansel to roast him. They trick the witch and capture her in the oven. Then they proceed to confuse and exhaust her until she finally collapses. Everyone is then freed of her spell. The day before Christmas vacation turned out interesting. Some people went to Hillcrest Nursing Home to visit with the residents. Later they ate at Pizza Hut in Geneseo. Others stayed for the FHA and FFA parties. There was to be a movie. ‘The Outsiders’, but the movie didn’t work. So, everyone either played Trivial Pursuit or were involved in a basketball tournament, etc. The French II class went to Mrs. Behrens house for a french dinner. Some said it was a successful day and others felt they had been cheated because they lost out on seeing the movie. Top Left: Tom seems to be bored with Juli’s conversation. The night started out with just a little snow, but soon it got out of control. There were people going in ditches, getting stuck, and just plain slick roads. Though there were some other problems along with the snow, everyone had a good time. There was no band, just a disc jockey, but he was really good. The theme was “Jungle Love” and it was. Everyone ate a buffet dinner after students arrived. Along with the Juniors and Seniors and their dates there were sixteen chaperones. Included in the chaperones were Mr. and Mrs. Dolieslager, Mr. and Mrs. Calsyn, some of the faculty and their spouses, and Junior parents. After the dinner we all waited for the wills and phophesy to be read. When it finally came time, everyone was quiet so they could listen. The wills were rather prolonging, but very intersting! The prophesy, everyone agreed, fit well with the lifestyles of the Seniors and how we would picture them in ten years time. Then the floor was cleared for dancing. The band, Rathskeller, from Champagne, was liked by one and all. No one seemed to be in much of a dancing mood, but we all enjoyed the music anyway. Some of the students would agree that the theme, “Lost in Love,” fit well with the mood they were in that night. Upper Right: Julie’s going to get 'em with the Kodak Disc. A feeling that can expand as far as you want it to. And terminate at your command alone. A struggle for peace and tranquility. To conquer and rise above all evils. Leaving nothing but goodness behind. An achievement you strive for and complete in the end. An ultimate goal . . An idea too brillant to let anyone else know of its existence. An expectation to make the most of whatever you have And not let anyone else hold you hack. A secret buried within your mind An awe for the moon, the sun, the stars and the universe. For wisdom and progression. For fame and fortune For love and honor. Because when all that you have is taken away The only thing left is a dream.
