But there is still so much life a head of us. Yesterdayis gone forever, tomorrow will never come. We must live each day as if it were our last. Our thoughts and actions today will determine our destiny. We must decide now who we are and where we are going. The choice i$ ours! Our time is now! Life’s many burdens must be shared with someone else. Questions must be answered. Opinions must be heard. Secrets must be shared. Tears must be dried. Needs must be fulfilled. Pain must be relieved. Together we can conquer the world: alone we can accomplish nothing. Someone is needed to lend a hand to pick the pieces that someone left behind. No matter who we are, each of us is someone’s guiding light. We must reach out! Our time is now! hopes. Time has brought us . -. . together, and time will tear us UUT lime IS NOW! apart. We stand together on the threshold of a dream. Let us begin for 6 TO LEARN HIGH SCHOOL 1983-84 School Year This year school began with several new faces. While in the past AHS had always had a rather large turnover in staff. 1983-84 was something of a record setter. New teachers included English. Science. Math. Boys P.E.. Agriculture and Music. Plus. AHS had a new principal. Last year’s ag teacher. Mr Calsyn, replaced Mr. Torrence as our “Fearless Leader . The only returning veterans were Mr. Hepner. Miss Hoffman, and Mrs. Magerkurth. Along with the new staff changes, there were several additions in the courses offered. The most notable addition was French. All agreed that the 1983-84 school year ran extremely smooth, which awards and achievements earned both inside and outside of the classroom. 8 Opens With Several New Faces Opposite Page: Top Right: Atkinson Board of Education: Left to Right: Tom VanVooren. Coach Bandy gave the football team lots of encouragement. Many fans came to the Bonfire to show their support and then to Tiger Night to cheer them on to a victory. The parade in the afternoon was enough to fire the boys up if none of the other events during the week were. Through the game against Depue, the Tigers held up. Even though we didn't win, our boys held up and fought to the end. The next night at the Homecoming Dance, no ones fun was dampered by the slight loss. The atmosphere of the season tempted us all to prove ourselves of our capabilities to live up to this motto. Everyone pitched in and helped contribute to the hard work put into decorating the gym. We all waited in anticipation to find out who was to become King and Queen. Debbie Gilbraith and Terry Patton received the honors. Everyone enjoyed hearing a variety of music from a disc jockey. It turned out to be quite a success in the end. There was quite a crowd for the crowning and many just showed up to dance and have a good time with friends. On addition to participating in the school play, the Speech-Drama class sent several people to speech contests, winning several awards. The class also presented a one act comedy to the Middle School, which was enjoyed by all. In short, the “Tiger Troupe continued its tradition of both fun and excellence. Right: All that for me? Thanks! Below: As part of a play for the Middle School Karin. Susan, and Nancy argue over who started an argument. “Cheaper By The Dozen” is a typical family situation which includes the good and the bad of a family life. A father's pursuit at making less waste motions in his household, a eldest daughter growing up and facing her fathers' dissatisfaction of her interest in boys, and a mother trying to keep the family all together through the hardships. Putting all this together made it quite a drama and with plenty of good humor to go along. Right: Tom and Joe during one of their disputes''. 26 Continues At A.H.S. It started at 6 o’clock, and the theme was More Than a Feeling After dinner Amy read the wills, for some reason everyone willed Trev some tact. Alot of things were willed, including a few things to the teachers. Jodi Obrecht read the prophecy, and the straw votes. In the prophecy everyone was doing interesting things, especially Terry Patton who was a Chipendale dancer. Then it came time for the dance. The band was Harlequin and everyone danced and enjoyed themselves. The night was a success. Top: Everyone enjoyed Jodi reading the prophecy Middle Left: Did you hear what they willed Trev? As the school drew to a close, tension began to mount. Everyone was keyed up for exams and graduation. To help everyone relax, and as a reward for the excellent conduct of the students during the past year. Mr. Calsyn and the staff decided to give everybody a break. During their last week in school, the seniors were allowed to watch TV and shoot the breeze in a ' senior lounge. located in the old study hall. And during the afternoon of the ' last” Monday, the Freshmen. Sophomores, and Juniors took the afternoon off for a picnic day. Hanna fixed a picnic lunch for everyone. Then everyone scattered to the four winds. Mr. Bandy took some bike riding. Mr. Carr took some golfing, some went fishing, while others stayed at school playing tennis. Chad? Lower Right: Lookout world, here comes Derek Welveart. tennis superstar! Our Chaotic Creation: Well, it has been quite a year for the high school yearbook staff. Things got off to a tough start. With all the trouble from the bank closing, selling ads to area businesses was a bit more difficult than it has been in the past. We tried to make up the difference by raising the price of the book, but that wasn't enough. So we held a Sadie Hawkins Dance. This helped pull the yearbook out of the red. Next came the dreaded deadlines. Thirty-two pages were due the third Monday of March, April, and June. The best way to handle the pressure is to spread the work out over several weeks prior to the deadline. However, we were not about to do things the easy way. No matter how hard we tried, each time we found ourselves putting together 23 pages at the last minute. In that last minute confusion. you could hear Penny wondering where everyone was at, or Amy grumbling that she has typed the same FHA copy three times now. or Amy VanDevelde trying to convince Mr. Hepner to buy everyone pizza with his hard earned money. Above all this hangs a poster in the history room which bears our slogan . .. Many trophies were brought home, from the judging teams and new freshmen gained valuable experience. Besides the annual Sweetheart Dance, the FFA joined with the FHA in having a spaghetti supper and donating money to the Cancer Society. They also took a group to the farm progress show in Marian, Iowa. All and all it was a good year for the FFA. Atkinson FFA Excels Upper right: Kale Causemaker, Treasurer. When it came time for homecoming, they sold mums and carmel apples. That night, before the game, they sponsored a spaghetti supper along with the FFA. It was very successful. They had a profit of $350. To spend their money, they held the Sweetheart Dance along with the FFA. Since Barb Oldfield donated the flowers, both organizations got together and donated $100 to the American Cancer Society. In May came the Mother-Daughter banquet, which was held at the King's Table. Throughout the year they tried an occasional pep assembly and cheered at many games. The cheerleaders put out their best effort to keep the Tiger Spirit. In addition to cheering, they also helped serve at a Kiwanis pancake breakfast. The highlight of their year was traveling to Champaign to cheer the girls on. Spirits Up! Three important organizations at AHS are the National Honor Society. Student Council, and The Athletic Club. Membership in the NHS is based upon excellence in four areas: scholarship, character, leadership, and service. The Student Council was responsible for making Homecoming a success. Members also jired a band. •'Life , which played for the entire high school. The Athletic Club sponsored both the Fresh-Soph Tourney and the Volleyball Tourney, and have helped to purchase a school microwave and a video cassette recorder. Because the group is made up of both high school and middle school students, they are active in both schools. The band played in the stands for all of the home basketball and football games and for the last home volleyball game. They also do community services like playing for Veteran’s Day and funerals. The middle school members participated in the Bureau Valley Elementary Conference band and chorus festival in October. The high school members participated in the Indian Vally Conference band festival. Of course, the band played for the Christmas concert and the Spring Fine Arts Festival. Two special events the band sponsored were seeing a production at Circa Playhouse and inviting a group from Asbury College from Wilmore. Kentucky to play before the school. The band was worked hard, but it has paid off. The quality of sound, and their ability to play, has improved a lot. The Atkinson chorus consists of nine young women. They met at 7:45 a m. to practice twice a week. The girls participated in the Indian Valley Conference Choral Festival in November, sang in the Christmas Concert, and took solos and ensembles to the Illinois High School Association Solo and Ensemble Contest in March. They did very well scoring lst’s and 2nd’s in their events. Top: Atkinson High Middle School Band. Row 1: Matt Cubertson. Jodi Van Damme. Kathy Buysse. Amy Claeys. Jason Hurliman. They rolled over such teams as Walnut, Annawan, and Wyanet with the aid of such key players as Audrey Sherbeyn, Nancy Simon, and freshman Val Wancket. The girls played hard all season and their efforts paid off. The Atkinson Girls Fresh-Soph Basketball team also had a respectable season. Coach White’s team finished with an 8-7 record. Their conference mark was 5-5. Their best game came against Riverdale, with balance scoring among the starters contributions towards the win. With a record of 10 and 12 the Tigers were led by such shining stars as Curt Johnson, Troy Minnaert, Terry Patton, and “Super Sub” Brett Van De Woestyne. One of the factors contributing to the Tigers success was their new head coach Jeff Neubauer. Hard work and dedication made this year a winning one. 54 Team To Victory! With 24 wins and only 2 losses. As the season progressed, the girls continued to rack up one win after another. The only disappointment was when Wethersfield edged them out by 3 points and Manlius by 4 points. They began their week of initiation with having to eat delicious (stale) doughnuts- and tasty (disgusting) baby food. They then dressed up as servants and were “allowed” to push pennies down the gym floor with, what else, their noses. It was unfortunate that some of the graduates were unable to attend the ceremony because of their participation in the boys state track meet at Eastern Illinois University. However, for those who were there, it was a beautiful experience that will long be remembered. High above the graduates was the class motto; Our Yesterdays have made us what we are. We make our tomorrows! Once the numerous awards had been given out. each member of the class received what they had been working towards for the past 13 years, their diploma. As they filed out to the receiving line in front of the grade school office, everyone thought back to the special memories that they held, realizing that from this moment on. they would never again be together as a group. But they also realized that whether they stayed in Atkinson, or went to some distant university and a job beyond, they would always carry with them a special bond with the other members of the class of 1984. Now we can reflect upon our childhood days; days when pressures were few and delights were many. After many hours of struggle and tension, a minute of relaxation is necessary. Communicate with those nearby. Reach out. Understand that we have many common heartaches and joys. We will find what we are looking for if we only try. The times they are a’changing. At no time throughout our entire history has society been so complex. There are so many problems; so many changes; so much to remember and understand. It is easy to condemn, to make fun of, to laugh. But who is willing to take the time to analyze the problems and devise meaningful solutions? .hat task falls on us, the Class of '84. Atkinson High School has given us the tools, we must put them to use! If we fail, we have only ourselves to blame. 11 u I m I m A • It is indeed our time. A time to study, to play, to work, to compete. To enjoy the simpler things in life; being with someone, holding hands, sharing secrets, making friends. Discovering what life holds in store for us; knowledge, musical ability, strength, creativity. The ability to understand, to comprehend, to accept. The ability to achieve great things without losing sight of those who helped make us what we are! 95 To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; A time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; A time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; A time of war, and a time of peace. It is time for many things, but the most important thing to remember is % Our Time Is Now!!!
