After worrying all summer about initiation we find that it wasn’t as bad as we had anticipated. However in the organizations we join we still find ourselves being called upon to do all the dirty work. Despite, all the hassels that we encounter, we know that in a few years we will again be the big shots. Struggling To Freshmen class officers: Joe Claeys Pres.. Chad Johnson Vice-Pres.. You might consider this the “Year of the Cars for our class. We not only terrorized the county by showing off our new driving abilities but also shocked the town by turning Mr. DeDeckers car into a vicious tiger for the Homecoming parade. It is hard to believe that we are actually looking forward to spending a dollar twenty on a gallon of gas. They did very well in the contest that they competed in. Of course the FFA had a very successful FFA week. They put on the petting zoo for the children, held farmer appreciation day, held a tractor show, had a dress up day, and new to the weeks activities this year they held a breakfast for the board and staff members. The year proved to be quite successful. LEFT: P-JO busy scrambling eggs for the school personel during FFA week BOTTOM: FFA members top row Tim VanAntwerp. Trev Minnaert, Steve Sherbeyn. This year Atkinson sent a record number of students to Washington D.C. on the Close Up program. To raise money, the participants worked hard at various fund raising projects. This included working at a number of concession stands and visiting area businesses seeking donations. The business men and women of Atkinson were extremely generous, donating several hundred dollars to the Atkinson Close Up fund. The Atkinson group left Moline Airport on Sunday, April 23, 1983. While in Washington, they stayed at the Sheraton National near the Pentagon. In DC, they travelled throughout the city and attended a number of seminars. This included a meeting with area Congressman Lane Evans and participating in a live television broadcast over the C-SPAN educational network. After a week of sightseeing and education, the group returned to Atkinson on April 30, tired but happy. RIGHT: Row 1; Beth Snodgrass, Susan Buysee. Row 2: Kelly Causemaker, Kristi Price. The most improved player this year was Tom Heller. The All-Conference selections on both offense and defense were Aaron Sturtewagen and Curt Johnson who Coach Eggleston noted as doing exceptionally well. “There is some good Fresh-Soph, talent coming next year,” continued Eggleston, “this coupled with the several players coming back should make for a solid and much improved varsity.” UPPER RIGHT: Come on Joe bounce off that ground! Although many of the games were forfeited they finished the season with the record of 2-2. “The team nanaged their best performance in their last game,” said Coach Eggleston. Joe Claeys, Roger Reiling, Scott Sorenson, Chad Johnson, Brent Moens, and Bobby Ericson were exceptional. These players also made substantial contributions in both the Fresh-Soph and Varsity games. With the experience of the returning Fresh-Soph players and a group of talented incoming 8th graders we should be more competitive at this level next year. Even though the trophy was quite an honor the most rewarding part of the season was beating their rival Annawan. ‘‘We beat Annawan and I was very happy about that,” exclaimed Coach Hoffman. Although the record was not all that terrific, the boys worked hard. Tom Heller was the only senior on the squad, we will have 4 juniors returning next year. With some of the fresh-soph’s talent, the basketball season for next year looks prosperous. The boys will have to get used to a new coach, but the season should be a good one. The whole team has a great deal of talent and many possibilities,” said coach Daniels, although they all had room for improvement both offensively and defensively.” The general outlook for the future is good. Though they lacked in number, the Fresh-Soph team always did their best and never quit. “During the season I could see alot of talent fighting its way to come out of some girls who lacked experience, but that will all come in time.” said coach White. Both coaches felt that the team got better as they played more games. “Next year I expect the Fresh-Soph team to be alot tougher, especially with the talent of next years Freshman.” continued White “All in all we were still very proud of the player. Atkinson Girls The Varsity girls polished off their season with an impressive record of 9-2. Both coaches and the fans were very happy about the success of the girls team. They played well together and revealed the talent that they really had. The girls won both of their tournements and the Regional title which advanced them to the sectionals. That was a first for any Atkinson team. “Next season should prove to be a good one also.” said coach Shinkevich. RIGHT: From L to R; Varsity Girls Basketball Team. Asst. Coach Ms. White. Mic Stanck. The theme for Homecoming and its weeks events was appropriately entitled “EYE OF THE TIGER” The school showed their spirit to the boys during “Spirit Week”. Each day was assigned a dress code all the way from the 50’s to modern day punk rockers. However Homecoming would not be complete without the traditional “Snake Dance and “Bonfire”. If the weeks activities weren’t enough to fire up the boys “Tiger Night and the parade did the job. The week was now over and it was time for the game. The Tigers did not let their supportive fans down. It was a definite victory for our 1982 Homecoming game. Tiger Troupe Does Agatha Christie Made Me Do It was a dramatic-comedy-mystery written in three acts by Eddie Cope. The audience had an opportunity to see a play written before their very eyes. The play revolved around the lovelife of millionare Monte Brainard, who decided to become engaged to more than one lady at the same time. Needless to say the ladies in question did not find this amusing. When a business partner of Monte’s turns up dead, everyone, especially Monte, is under suspision of murder. As is true for all Agatha Christie plays, no one has the slightest idea who the murderer is until the final scene. Thanks to the efforts of Mr. DeDecker, the Tiger Troupe put on another fine performance this year. Cast of Agatha Christie Made Me Do It Sgt. Jo Friday ... After 13 years of hard work and good times, the Class of 1983 wrapped it up at Atkinson. Led by Junior Class Marshalls Trev Minnaert and Amy Longeville. the Class of 1983 marched in to the traditional song, Pomp and Circumstance. After seeing several of their classmates win awards and scholarships, and after the speeches of Eric Sorenson and Ann Claeys, each graduate received their diploma from School Board President Stan Heller.
