In Dedication A teacher affects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops. — adapted from Henry Adams, The Education of Henry Adams We wish to dedicate the 1982 yearbook to a woman who has devoted 31 years of her life to education. She is Roberta VanHamme. our middle and high school science teacher, who after teaching 22 years in the Atkinson school system is retiring this year. Mrs VanHamme was born in Macomb. Illinois on December 24. 1926 and was raised and educated in Adair. Illinois. She entered Western lllionis State Teachers College in September. 1944 and graduated from there in August, 1947. Before she eventually settled down to teach in Atkinson. Mrs. VanHamme taught at Annawan High School for two years, at Morrison Junior High School for one year, and at rural schools in the Erie. Illinois area for three years. She then spent eight years at Atkinson High School teaching science and physical education before moving on to Western High School in Buda. Illinois for three years. Mrs. VanHamme finally returned to Atkinson to teach fourth grade and later middle and high school science for fourteen years before retiring. Mrs VanHamme and her husband. Albert, live in Annawan. There they raised three children: Colette. Michael and Lanette. Of the three children. Lanette is still at home and is attending school in Annawan. Mrs VanHamme is greatly looking forward to retirement, for she has many hobbies and pastimes to keep her busy. Among them are reading, sewing, cooking and fishing. And even though she will no longer be teaching, she will of course be involved with various school activities through her daughter Lanette. Mrs. VanHamme will certainly be well remembered by all whom she has taught or with whom she has worked. While she could be quite opinionated and blunt at times, she is also very warm and generous. As everyone who's known her can attest, beneath her castiron exterior beats a heart of pure gold Mrs. VanHamme. we will miss you. May God bless you for all your hard work as a teacher, you advice as a confidant, and you love as a friend. 2
