Graduation Atkinson High School 1982 Yearbook Vol 40 Special Events 31 ___ Organizations 7onraii f Running oear 320 Bushel Wagons IVFrame L Atkinson IL rA In Dedication A teacher affects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops. — adapted from Henry Adams, The Education of Henry Adams We wish to dedicate the 1982 yearbook to a woman who has devoted 31 years of her life to education. She is Roberta VanHamme. our middle and high school science teacher, who after teaching 22 years in the Atkinson school system is retiring this year. Mrs VanHamme was born in Macomb. Illinois on December 24. 1926 and was raised and educated in Adair. Illinois. She entered Western lllionis State Teachers College in September. 1944 and graduated from there in August, 1947. Before she eventually settled down to teach in Atkinson. Mrs. VanHamme taught at Annawan High School for two years, at Morrison Junior High School for one year, and at rural schools in the Erie. Illinois area for three years. She then spent eight years at Atkinson High School teaching science and physical education before moving on to Western High School in Buda. Illinois for three years. Mrs. VanHamme finally returned to Atkinson to teach fourth grade and later middle and high school science for fourteen years before retiring. Mrs VanHamme and her husband. Albert, live in Annawan. There they raised three children: Colette. Michael and Lanette. Of the three children. Lanette is still at home and is attending school in Annawan. Mrs VanHamme is greatly looking forward to retirement, for she has many hobbies and pastimes to keep her busy. Among them are reading, sewing, cooking and fishing. And even though she will no longer be teaching, she will of course be involved with various school activities through her daughter Lanette. Mrs. VanHamme will certainly be well remembered by all whom she has taught or with whom she has worked. While she could be quite opinionated and blunt at times, she is also very warm and generous. As everyone who's known her can attest, beneath her castiron exterior beats a heart of pure gold Mrs. VanHamme. we will miss you. May God bless you for all your hard work as a teacher, you advice as a confidant, and you love as a friend. 2 1 SCHOOL STAFF Administrators Set School Policy ABOVE LEFT: Don Dolieslager. superintendent of schools. While it's fun to play in or watch one of our football games, how can the Homecoming game be anything but special when the entire school spends a whole week psyching up for it? Enthusiasm really mounted this year during the spirit week that preceded our Homecoming game. The theme for spirit week was Revolution, based on the song by the Beatles. Consequently, one of the dress-up days held during spirit week was dedicated to wartime apparel, and students roamed the halls that day wearing combat fatigues and helmets and carrying toy guns and rifles. Also, Atkinson's own Beatles (Todd Musich, Randy Sims, Eric Van Lue, Pete Van Herzeele) were the featured attraction at Tiger Night. Of course, the purpose of all the spirit week activities — including Tiger Night, the bonfire and pep rally, and the parade — was to put us in a fighting mood for the battle that would take place on the football field. And by the time that the game's opening kickoff came, we were truly ready for a revolution! LEFT: Napkin stuffing is Beth's specialty. Although we lost our game against DePue, we still enjoyed ourselves at the dance the following night. Hosted by the student council, the dance featured a live band and the presentation of the Homecoming court. As always, the high point of the evening was the crowning of the Homecoming king and queen, who this year were Andy Claeys and Sonita Oldfield. 33 Sweetheart Dance Celebrates A ABOVE LEFT: Ann uses the overhead projector to prepare decorations for the dance. The Fantasticks : A Musical This was the first time in many years that a musical (in fact, a musical-comedy) was chosen for the school play. They do so. they believe, in direct opposition to their parents' wishes, but in fact the parents are behind the whole thing — and even arrange for an abduction of the girl so that the boy will rescue her While the parents' wild scheme works, the young lovers are not satisfied once they are in each other's arms. Both need to mature first: the girl by experiencing another romance (with her abductor) and the boy by falling into the clutches of a rather evil lot. This is the fire that tempers their love, and in the end they return to each other's arms, presumably to live happily ever after. Membership in NHS depends upon demonstration of academic excellence (which requires maintaining a 3.0 GPA, with no D's or F's, for five consecutive semesters of high school) and evidence of good character (as attested by vote of the high school faculty). These students will be given tassels to wear at their graduation from high school. LEFT: NHS members: (standing) Dave Nelson, Aaron Sturtewagen, Eric Sorenson; (seated) Mr. Torrance, sponsor. Two Go To Washington On Close-Up Two sophomores, Terry Pafton and Brett VanDeWoestyne, were able to see and learn more of Washington, D.C. in a week than most people do in a lifetime. The two boys participated in Close-Up, a federally sponsored program that sends high school students from across the country to our nation's capital for an intensive week-long, close-up look at our federal government and how it works. While there, Terry and Brett attended lectures, seminars and luncheons at which the guest speakers were people involved with making, interpreting and enforcing the law of the land: Congressmen, lawyers, government officials and even a few bureaucrats. Of course, plenty of time was also allowed for straightfoward sightseeing. The trip was certainly an exciting and meaningful one for both Terry and Brett, and it was partly made possible through the efforts of this year's Close-Up coordinator at AHS, Mr. Torrance. Can't Stop The Music The Tiger Band, under the direction of Miss LeAnn Taylor, provided the stirring music for our pep assemblies, home football and basketball games, and the Homecoming parade. In addition to the sports-related music, the band performed at the annual Christmas concert and Spring Arts Festival. And as fundraisers, the band members sold fruit and popcorn this year. Since most people had trouble pronouncing my name when I first arrived in the United States. I asked everyone to call me Uli. I am the AFS exchange student from West Germany. I am the middle of three children. I have an older sister, who is an optician, and a little brother. My father works as a construction designer and my mother as a cashier. We live near a large city called Regensburg (pop 1.300.000) in Bavaria, which is the southern part of Germany. Before I came to the United States. I thought I was pretty good in sports, but experience here showed me toehrotherwise. The only sport in which I feel I can really compete is skiing, which I happen to teach to children back home. I like animals and plants. At home I have almost a little zoo: tortoises, leeches and fish. Since I live on a farm here with the Rahn family. I am surrounded by many kinds of animals, but I still don't like your pigs! Our school system is totally different from the one in Atkinson. After elementary school, we split into three different kinds of school: an easy track, an average track and an advanced track. If you choose the easy one, you graduate after the 9th garde. My school, the hardest one, has graduation after the 13th grade. We must take between 12 and 14 subjects every year and cannot choose them. Most of them are academic classes. I have learned much about American life during my stay here: about new foods to eat. different customs, country life, American winters. Chicago, parties — and about people who were very nice to me. I would like to thank everybody from Atkinson for making this year one I never will forget. My special thanks to my American family, the Rahns. for their love and kindness. I will certainly miss you all! Love. Uli To Us From Germany RIGHT: Uli plays in the snow with her American brother. Ryan BELOW LEFT: Though she perfers skiing. However, in the close Homecoming game against DePue, Andy Claeys did set a new school record for individual rushing in a single game: 221 yards in 23 carries. Andy was also named a fullback to the Indian Valley All-Conference Second Team. After attending a summer cheerleading camp, the girls spend many hours developing and practicing their cheers and routines, to say nothing of all the preparation they put into Tiger Night activities at Homecoming. It's not all glitter and glamour for the girls, who must keep the spirit of bofh the team and the fans up no matter how the game or season is going. Mapes 936-7320 936-7882 107 Last Sunday, as I was pondering over what message to leave you, a thunderstorm rumbled overhead. I witnessed Mother Nature's awesome display of jagged, intertwined lighting bolts intruding upon the deep, wrinkled greys of the sky. The thunder was close enough that the house trembled, but also so far away that is seemed to come from every point of the compass. I looked at the brightly shining sun to the west. It was just about to submerge into the horizon. That scene reminded me of the old cliche', Always look on the bright side, which brought a constructive philosophy to mind: Every problem or bad situation presents an opportunity to better ourselves, to learn from our decisions, whether right or wrong. In these times of trouble — the Falklands crisis, the arms race, and other problems facing us, our nation and civilization — I think most of us sever ourselves from the world in which we live. Sometimes I become aware of myself becoming oblivious to the evidence of realities in the world. I like to believe that I inhabit a world with no major crises. Regretably, that's not true. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. We, at times, feel the globe rotates around Atkinson, Henry County and western Illinois. That, however, isn't true. The universe is infinitely larger. I discovered this fact two years ago when I was fortunate enough to tour southern Europe. Flying over the interminable ocean was the first time I sensed the size of our home planet. I had seen pictures of the great seas before, but this was an unfamiliar dimension. I saw places about which history has been written, and previously I had only experienced them in that detached way The people were so different in the way they spoke, acted and thought, but still they were human with the same feelings, hopes and fears as we No matter how far away, people are always people. Wherever you may travel, sand is always similar. There may be different colors in different lands, but sand is sand. We are all grains of sand in the shoreline of Mother Earth. The waves of time endlessly wash down upon us joy and sorrow, both fine and troubled times. Through all this pounding there are a few who will be able to rise above it and become a larger, more stable aggregate, a rock. However far you roam on that long and winding road, I wish that each and every one of you will become a rock, not just being satisfied as a comfortable grain of sand. I hope that you will not be forgotten, washed away by the infinite waves of time. — Dave Nelson Valedictory address delivered at Atkinson graduation ceremonies on May 21, 1982
