After graduating from Media High School in 1954 as the salutatorian of his class, Mr. Wendell Torrance attended Western Illinois University on a teacher's training scholarship. After attending the university for two years, Mr. Torrance was employed by the Burlington Northern Railroad and worked for that company for eleven years. Having always had the desire to work with young people, he returned to college and received his bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University in 1968. Three years later he received a master's degree in educational administration from Illinois State University. Mr. Torrance also completed work on the Superintendent's Endorsement, which is one year beyond the master's degree, in 1974. Wendell Torrance was born and raised on a farm in Henderson County, Illinois. In 1956 he married Margie Morris, a graduate of Biggsville High School. The Torrances have three children: Randy 23, Greg 20, and Eric 10. They also have a granddaughter, Heather, age 3. When asked how he liked being principal at AHS, Mr. Torrance said, ''I am proud to be a member of the faculty at Atkinson High School. I work with an excellent staff, superintendent, and board of education, and I enjoy the challenge of working with young people on the high school level. We, the students of AHS, would like to thank you, Mr. Torrance, for all the friendship you have shared with us and all the help you have given us. We wish you the best of luck in your future years as our principal and friend. They hold many money-making projects throughout the year, including concession stands at football and basketball games and a mum sale at Homecoming. With the money they raise, the FHA is able to sponsor the Halloween Party and Daddy-Daughter Date Night as well as co-sponsor the Sweetheart Dance with the FFA. To reward its members at the end of the year, the FHA holds its Mother-Daughter Don't cut your finger, Lisa. Verna practices sewing button holes. At its Farmers' Appreciation Day, the FFA said thank you to local farmers for all they do A variety of agricultural activities kept the members of FFA busy throughout the year. In the fall, they harvested the corn from the 3-acre farm the FFA owns near the school. With the money from their harvest as well as the profits from the vending machines in the schoollounge and from football and basketball concession stands, the FFA was able to sponsor the Jean Dance and co-sponsor the Sweetheart Dance with the FF1A. The FFA also held its annual Farmer's Appreciation Day. Something new this year was a petting zoo, with animals ranging from a pair of Siamese cats to a horse, which the FFA arranged for the children in the elementary and middle schools. Members of the FFA also participated in many judging contests, with second-place finishes in crop-judging and power-mechanics contests. To reward everyone for their hard work, the annual FFA Banquet was held in the spring. Dan stirs the chili for the FFA initiation supper. Jim bags popcorn at an FFA concession stand. Among other things, a theme had to be chosen, ads had to be sold, hundreds of pictures had to be taken, page layouts had to be done, copy had to be written, and deadlines had to be met. But we did it! And now we invite you to enjoy the fruit of our labor. Yearbook staff: C. Nelms, T. Stafford, A. Claeys, K. Ey, J. Park, J. Haars, S. Oldfield, C. While able to sponsor both a student-exchange program with Annawan and a student government day, the council was unsuccessful in its attempt to re-open the student lounge. As unsual, the council also hosted the Homecoming Dance. Matt Claeys served as student council president. Mr. Torrance is NHS sponsor. Four Seniors Keep N.H.S. Alive Four seniors kept the National Honor Society alive at AHS this year. To become members of NHS, these students had to demonstrate academic excellence and be approved by vote of the high school faculty. Surprisingly, no juniors were inducted into NHS this year. Four Go To Washington, D.C. On Close-Up Three sophomores — Catherine Floming, Doug Patton and Eric Sorenson — and their sponsor, Mr. Van Wassenhove, spent a week in Washington, D.C. this spring on the Close-Up program. They traveled with over 100 other students and teachers from the Quad Cities area. While in Washington, they were able to learn how our federal government functions by examining it close up. Among other congressmen, they met with Rep. Tom Railsback and Sen. Alan Dixon. They also participated in numerous workshops, seminars and discussions with various lawyers, lobbyists and federal employees. Of course, they took time to see the sights of our nation's capital. All the Close-Up participants found their brief stay in D.C. exciting, enjoyable and eye-opening. The year began with a fundraiser: selling Texas oranges and grapefruit. As always, the band performed at all the home football and basketball games. In addition to the musical pep it provided for sports, the band also entertained everyone with its annual Christmas Concert. Not just at Christmas but throughout the year Atkinson was alive with the sound of music, thanks to the Tiger Band. Selling pizzas was this year, as in previous years, the major money-making project for the Athletic Club. Besides the pizza sale, the members of the Athletic Club also manned the concession stands during the Fresh-Soph Basketball Tournament. With the money earned from its fundraisers, the Athletic Club purchased new uniforms for the volleyball teams. (Below) Athletic Club members: (front row) R. Heller, T. Carton, D. Nelson, D. Herb, G. I'm from Cucuta, Colombia, South America. My father, Carlos Tribin, is an electronics engineer, and my mother, Teresa, is a housewife. I have three sisters and a brother. I'm the oldest in my family. I came to Atkinson through YFU (Youth For Understanding), and I stayed with the Gene Heller family. I have learned a lot about American life during my stay, and I can now speak English much better than before. I am happy that I was able to share with the Hellers and the people of Atkinson some of the customs and heritage of Colombia. I will always love and never forget the Heller family because they were so generous and kind to me. I also want to thank the people of Atkinson for making this year very exciting and wonderful for me. I love everyone, and I will miss you all. Love, Lily Lily Tribin (center), a YFU student from Colombia, stands next to her American sisters, Cindy and Kathy Ey. Lily, Life Jose Enjoy In America My name is Jose M. M. Castro. My hometown is Victoria, Espirito Santa, Brazil. My family consists of my mother and four brothers. Three of my brothers are older than I am; two of them are farmers and one is a lawyer. My younger brother is still in school. My father, who is deceased, was a medical doctor and served 12 years as an elected delegate to our state legislature. I came to the United States through the YFU (Youth For Understanding) program. I have stayed this year first with the Segura Family and then with the Roman family. I have enjoyed my stay very much. I would like to thank the people of Atkinson, who have been so friendly, and especially my American families for their special love and kindness. I will remember all of you always. Spirit Week + Tiger Night + Parade The Homecoming celebration of 1980 had its ups and downs, but all in all it was a lot of fun. Spirit Week kept everyone busy: dressing as the Blues Brothers in school and working on the class floats after school. Though the bonfire didn't burn well at Tiger Night activities, the entertainment was terrific and school spirit really soared! And though we lost our football game against Manlius, the loss didn't damper our enthusiasm or squelch our pride. We still had a good time at Homecoming's grande finale, the dance. While working on the junior class float, Val had the honor of putting the stripes on the tiger's head. Susie and Paula masquerade as the Blues Brothers during Spirit Week. Which one's Jake? Ladies and gentlemen, here they are the Blues Brotl Shawn and Ed stole the show atTiger Night with their terrific imm r on of Jake and Elwood. The senior class float apparently survived the wind during the parade. Guess who cleaned up after Tiger Night was over? Matt Claeys and Kay Gentry were the King and Queen of our 1980 homecoming. Presenting The 1980 Homecoming C The Homecoming Court was presented at the dance held Saturday evening. Cindy Ey was the sophomore attendant, and her escort was Rick Yarger. Beth Claeys was the freshman attendant, and her escort was Dan Cerar. ourt Shelly Franks was the senior attendant, and her escort was Shawn Sturtewagen. The cheerleaders warm up the crowd at the bonfire. If she weren't a cheerleader, Kay would be Charo. Julie's incessant cry to go to the bathroom gives Amy a headache. lust A Football Game Homecoming is more than just a football game; it's a week-long community celebration. Everyone in the high school participates in some way, whether their participation involves decorating a float for the parade or the gym for the dance, dressing as the Blues Brothers during Spirit Week or watching them at Tiger Night, being a member of the football team or of the Homecoming court. Everyone puts something of himself or herself into Homecoming, and that's what makes it so special. Because of our total involvement, the fun and exhiliration of Homecoming are not soon forgotten. Matt and Kay lead the grand march under the human arches.' Led by the Homecoming court, the grand march winds through the gym. What better way to relieve midwinter doldrums than to hold a dance? That's what the members of FFA and FHA thought. With their co-sponsorship of the Sweetheart Dance, held on February 7, 1981, we had a chance to forget the dog days' of winter as our thoughts turned to spring, the season of love. Appropriately enough, the theme of the dance was Love Is In The Air, and love certainly was in the air for all the sweethearts who attended the dance. Decorations for the dance included a huge helium balloon, covered with hearts, and gondola attached to send lovers' hearts soaring. The big event of the evening was, of course, the crowning of the Sweetheart King and Queen, Ted Carton and Brenda Gilbraitn. Everyone enjoyed the few hours of pleasure the dance afforded, and everyone appreciated the hard work FFA and FHA members put into holding it. Love Was In The Air Julie and Paula prepare the decorations for the dance. It takes experts like Jana, Cliff and Cindy to put up the streamers. At The Sweetheart Dance The couples especially enjoyed the slow dances. Is Ed asking Joe to dance with him? Members of the Sweetheart Court were the first on the dance floor. Andy and Jean obviously enjoyed the Sweetheart Dance. Kay and Tanya breathlessly await the crowning of the Sweetheart Queen. Presenting The Brenda Gilbraith, FHA president, is crowned Sweetheart Queen by Cliff Painter, FFA reporter. Brenda and Ted smile upon their subjects at the Sweetheart Dance. Paula McKibbon served as first attendant in the Sweetheart Court, and Shawn Sturtewa-gen was her escort. 28 1981 Sweetheart Court Ted Carton, FFA president, is crowned Sweetheart King by Cliff Painter, FFA reporter. Julio Wancket served as second attendant in the sweetheart Court, and Ed Neuleib was her escort. Anita Taber served as third attendant in the Sweetheart Court, and Darren DeMay was her escort. Angie Catton served as fourth attendant in the Sweetheart Court, and Dan Cerar was her escort. 29 A One-Woman Liberation Movement The cast of Time Out For Ginger : (seated) Jodi Haars as Joan Carol, Kay Gentry as Ginger Carol, Kathy Ey as Agnes Carol, Jean Park as Lizzie, Julie Wancket as Jeannie Carol; (standing) Mrs. Magerkurth (assistant director), Eric VanLue as Eddie Davis, Eric Sorenson as Tommy Green, Trev Minnaert as messenger, Rick Yarger as Howard Carol, Darren DeMay as Mr. Wilson, Steve Gentry as Ed Hoffman, and Mrs. Eberhardt (director). Enlivens Time Out For Ginger A one-woman liberation movement, taking place in a small town in the 1950's, provided the comic action for this year's school play, Time Out For Ginger. The play, focusing on a typical American family of the era, revolves around the desire of Ginger Carol, the youngest daughter in the family, to be — of all things — a football player! Naturally, Ginger's two sisters are outraged, her mother is upset, and her father — who doesn't even believe in girls' P.E. — is shocked. Others (including Mr. Carol's boss, the high school principal, and Ginger's boyfriend) join the action to condemn and interfere with Ginger's playing football. But, as with all comedies, there is a happy ending. After Ginger's super performance in a football game, everyone (especially her father) not only accepts her eccentricity, but in fact takes great pride in her. And, through all these experiences. Ginger is able to discover herself and her femininity. Of course, she also reconciles with her boyfriend. What else could you expect? Eric waits for the play to begin. The cast does the rumba up to the stage. Steve and Darren play tow of Ginger's antagonists. Here are the Carol sisters: Ginger, Joan and Jean-nie. In this scene of the play Jeannie Carol (portrayed by Julie Wancket) is leaving to perform her school's play. Stage, Prop, When you stop to think about producing a play, you soon realize that many more people are needed than simply a cast. Among others, you must have a stage crew, whose members design and build the set, prepare the lighting, and manipulate the stage curtains. You also need a prop crew, whose members fill the stage with furniture and find costumes for the cast. And then there's the makeup crew, whose members paint the faces and fix the hair of the cast in those hectic minutes before the play begins. All these invisible people — the ones who stay backstage — are essential to a play. Without them, the show just wouldn't go on. Makeup Crews Are Ryan and Tom prepare a flat for the set. Anita does her best to hang the wallpaper. Trev doubles as one of the stage crew as well as a member of the cast. Kathy and Jean really enjoy having their hair done. Juniors, Seniors Enjoy A The Junior Class treated Prom-goers this year to a “Hawaiian Fantasy, complete with lais and a tropical island. Held on May 16, the Prom included a buffet dinner, followed by a three-hour dance, at the Elk's Club in Kewanee. The After-Prom was then held at the Kewanee YMCA, where midnight snacks and such activities as swimming, basketball and volleyball were provided. Isn't it exciting waiting for the dinner to begin? Although just short of a break-even record, the Tigers were led by hard-working seniors and enthusiastic underclassmen to a 2-3 conference finish. Members of the varsity team who were named to the all-conference football squad, second team, are Dan Gerar (defensive halfback) and Ed Neuleib (offensive end). With more experience, these young men can expect a bright future in football; their hard work and dedication will prepare them well for varsity play. Football Cheerleaders Raise The varsity football cheerleaders demonstrate one of their fancier stances. Football Cheerleaders: (L to R) Kendra Collier, Anita Taber, Kay Gentry, Sonita Oldfield, Julie Wancket, Amy Longeville, Ann Claeys, Beth Obrecht, Verna Neuleib, Susie Carmichael. Sponsor is Mrs. Eberhardt (kneeling). 44 Varsity football cheerleaders: (L to R) Anita Taber, Julie Wancket, Kendra Collier, Sonita Oldfield, Kay Gentry. Look at Kay's Ultra-Bright smile! F S football cheerleaders: (L to R) Susie Carmichael, Verna Neuleib, Amy Longeville, Beth Obrecht, Ann Claeys, Team And School Spirit Being a cheerleader during the football season can be hard work. It all starts with learning our cheers; though memorizing the words of a cheer is easy enough, we also have to develop the moves that go with the cheer and then practice them until we get completely coordinated with each other. And those cheers that require climbing on each other's backs or shoulders are murder! Also, practicing a cheer indoors is one thing, but actually cheering at a football game is another. As tne weather gets colder, we have to cheer harder iust to keep warm! And you had better believe that all that cheering is rough on the vocal chords! Despite the work it takes to be football cheerleaders, we love it. To know that we raise the enthusiasm of the fans as well as the spirit of the team is reward enough. This is the way we clap our hands, clap our hands, ... As far as Susie and Ann are concerned, we're Number One ! The football cheerleaders certainly have lots of power. The 1980 varsity volleyball team experienced a very challenging season. It began on a high note, as enthusiasm and teamwork brought the girls victory in the Atkinson Invitational Volleyball Tournament. They struggled through the rest of the season, however, with five wins and ten losses. Because there were 12 seniors on the team, Coach Hoffman will have to rebuild the team next year with only three returning varsity veterans. Even though its season record was 4-12, the girls gained a lot of experience. Coach Hoffman expressed optimism for next year's season: We had many girls out this season, and the practice games gave everyone a chance to play. The girls showed they have the potential to be great volleyball players, and I believe they'll demonstrate it next year. Fresh-soph volleyball team: (front row) J. Park, D. Roman, B. Claeys, V. F S Girls' Basketball Team Has Talent Though the fresh soph girls' basketball team didn't enjoy a winning season, Coach Frankenreider believes that the girls have a lot of talent and that they will greatly improve with more experience. While the sophomores on the team also played at the varsity level, freshman Amy Longeville led the team in both rebounding and scoring. With a 3-8 season record, the team can expect better results next year, said Coach Frankenreider. Amy prepares to shoot a free throw. This was the first time an Atkinson team beat an Annawan team in any girls' sport. Coach Frankenreider was justly proud of his girls' efforts. Though the team was small in numbers, all the girls were hard-working and very enthusiastic ' he said. And with six veterans returning next year, Coach Frankenreider expects the girls' dedication to basketball to pay off with a winning season. After losing to DePue by 16 points midway through the season, the Tigers returned to pounce on DePue with a 54-52 win in the closing game of the season. Unfortunately, it was one of only 4 wins out of the 22 games played. Coach Weber attributes the poor record to the team's being both small in numbers and laden with injuries. Despite the team's performance, senior Ed Neuleib was given an IVC All-Conference Honorable Mention for his talents on the court. A Salute To Sports Freshmen Find Themselves We no sooner climb to the top of the heap as eighth graders in middle school than we find ourselves back at the bottom as freshmen in high school. Life just isn't fair. Being freshmen, we have to go through the initiation rites set for us by the seniors. We have to take required courses that we don't like, but must have in order to graduate. And in the organizations we join, we must do the dirty work that none of the upperclass members want to do. Though it isn't easy being freshmen, we still have lots of fun. We're finally away from those babies in middle school. We can stay out later, go on dates, and start making decisions for ourselves. We now have more freedom to lead our own lives. And despite all the hassles of being freshmen, we know that in a few short years we'll be seniors. So watch out, upperclassmen; here we come. '—— Terrors Of The Road Sophomore class officers: secretary, Catherine Floming; president, Aaron Sturtewagen; vice-president, Eric Snodgrass. Missing is Brad Hancock, treasurer. The sophomore year is a time of waiting. Because we are still considered underclassmen (in the same category as freshmen), much of what we want to do or have has to wait until we're older , however long that takes. We first have to wait for our turn to get behind the wheel in drivers' ed. and then until our 16th birthday, when we can finally get a driver's license and free ourselves of relying upon our parents and older brothers and sisters for rides. (Isn't it odd how they so reluctantly give us permission to drive, calling us terrors of the road as if they drive so much better than we do?) We also have to wait for our class rings, which we order early in the fall and which take forever to arrive. We wait to assume leadership positions in in school organizations; we're still not considered experienced enough in most organizations to be elected president or even vice-president (though occasionally we're made secretary). We wait to play varsity sports and must be content with being the stars of the fresh-soph teams. We seem to be caught in a kind of limbo: no longer green as the freshmen are and yet not old enough to be given the responsibility and freedom we desire. But we will wait. We will be patient, for we know that our time will come. Patrick Oldfield Jean Park Doug Patton Jill Rednour Deanne Roman Eric Snodgrass Eric Sorenson Tammy Stafford Aaron Sturtewagen Mike Vandersnick Teresa VanHerzeele Walkie VanOpdorp 69 We're over the hump! It's downhill from here: Next year we're seniors, and then we'll be high school graduates. But before that time comes, we have a lot of work to do. We have to take U.S. History and pass a U.S. Constitution test in order to get our high school diplomas. Because we're upperclassmen, we're expected to be leaders now, rather than followers, in school organizations. We have to spend the entire school year preparing for the Junior-Senior Prom, and raising money for that extravaganza isn't easy. We have to take the ACT and start thinking about what college we want to attend. In fact, we need to start thinking about our whole life after high school, for our high school careers are almost over. Time is running short. Before long, the last bell will ring for us at Atkinson High. And then, who knows?
