Mr. Ralph Moens has been a teacher, an adviser, and most importantly, a friend to everyone. After graduating from Atkinson High School in 1946, Ralph J. Moens spent two years in the United States Army. In the fall of 1948, Mr. Moens entered the University of Illinois' College of Agriculture. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture, he started teaching ag. at Erie High School in )une, 1951. Ten years later Mr. Moens returned to U. of I. and received a Masters degree in agriculture. In 1962, he began teaching at Atkinson High School. After being here eight years, he started our Co-op program and has been vocational education supervision and administration in 1972. Ralph Moens was born and raised in Atkinson. He married Mary Lou Causemaker, also a graduate of AHS. They were blessed with three children, two boys and one girl. Mr. Moens has many enjoyments, including farming, photography, and working with people. He has received many awards over the years. Mr. Moens will be leaving teaching to join the Atkinson Bank staff. His wish is to serve the community in a little different capacity. We, the yearbook staff and students of AHS, would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Moens for all he has given us and to wish him the best of luck in his latest endeavor. 2 You mean a lot to us, R. J. We will certainly miss you at AHS. People We Can't Do Without Pictured on this page are people you see every day; but because they may not sit behind a desk or stand in front of a class, you may not realize how important they are to Atkinson High. These people do the so-called little things that keep the school functioning. In their ways, each one has a big impact on the school. We therefore want to express our appreciation of all the hard work they do for us and the cheerful way in which they do it. Pictured across the page, from top to bottom, are: jane Dolieslager, librarian; Becky Wancket, crossing guard and van driver; Pat Nelms, Arlo Atwell, and Fran Ledford, janitors; Lorrie Jurgensen, secretary; Hannah Bilfiet and Elsie Diericx, cooks; Dorothy Heller, nurse; and Barb Snider, bookkeeper. Not pictured are the members of the Board of Education: Stan Heller, Greg Patton, Paul Nelson, Dave VanDeVelde, jean Neuleib, Tom VanVooren, and Ron Reiling. 0oOOOOOOOOOOOOVOVOOOOQO{ ' Now Playing Classes o -o. f A A Class That Joe Aim Susie Carmichael Cathy Catton Ann Claeys Jerry Enyeart Julie Evans Cindy Ey Catherine Floming Tom Heller Brett Hultman Barb Jensen Debbie Jiles Pres. It took no longer than the first day of school for us freshmen to create total chaos at AHS with our noisy and disruptive behavior. While we were frequently engaged in riotous acts, we did accomplish a few praiseworthy things. For instance, we became professional napkin stuffers as we built our homecoming float, which (after some hectic last-minute changes) tied for first place in the parade. And though we tried our luck as concessioneers at football and basketball games, we only succeeded in becoming experts on burnt popcorn and weak coffee. Through all the trials and tribulations of our first year of high school life, we freshmen are living proof that survival still belongs to the fittest. Although these things slowed our progress on the float, we did share first place (unjustly we might add) with the freshmen. After hours of deliberation, we finally decided on our favorite style of class ring. Then we waited .. and waited . . and waited for our rings to arrive. The real highlight of our sophomore year was preparation for getting our driver's license. The worst part about it was putting up with Mr. Phillips' bad jokes! .....Sophomores What did you say? One play from the two-yard line stopped the Tigers from winning a 20-19 battle against Western. That game ended our playoff chances as well. The following players, who were named to the all-conference team, helped greatly to produce our 6-3 season record and a second-place finish in the Western Division of the Indian Valley Conference: Tony Wancket, Ryan VanOpdorp, Jon Minneart, Mike Taber, Russ Rahn, Tom Sears, and Dave Nelson. 51 F-S Team Battles The Fresh-Soph football tean compiled a losing season re cord this year thanks to an ex ceptionally small squad. T make matters worse, half th« members of the F-S team wer also members of the Varsit team. Due to the shortage ii manpower, the team won onl two games, one of which wa forfeited. Coaches Frankenreider an Shinkevich look forward to better season to come. Rebuilding This was a season for rebuilding the Varsity team ' says Coach Chuck Blake. With a 9-13 season record, the team's foremost problem lay in its member's lack of experience. We had a number of players who simply hadn't played enough ball, says Blake. But next year there will be five returning lettermen who could prove the nucleus of an excellent team. By far the most memorable game of the season, according to Blake, was the battle against Western, which Atkinson won but only after the game went into triple overtime. Two seniors honored this season were Tony Wancket, who was named an all-conference player, and Gary Boelens, who received recognition as the Most Improved Player by vote of his teammates. Mr. Ball! The 1980 track team, despite its small size, saw some outstanding individual performances this season. The confused winners were: Tony Wancket, first in shot put and second in discus and the 100-meter dash; Russ Rahn, fifth in the 400-meter run. In addition, the 400-meter relay team, consisting of Tony Wancket, Russ Rahn, Dan Evans, and Dan Cerar, came in fourth at conference. Finally, at the district level, Tony Wancket placed first in both the 100-meter dash and shot put, making him a state qualifier in both events. i Coach Weber is pleased with the re suits of today's track meet. The Most Valuable Track Individual was Paula McKibbon, who qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash at District and ended up in 7th place overall. At the Fresh-Soph Conference Meet, 4th place was captured by the 800-meter relay team consisting of Julie Evans, Ann Claeys, Tammy Stafford, and Kendra Collier. At the Varsity Conference Track Meet, the 400-meter relay team got 5th. Members of that team were Julie Evans, Kendra Collier, Julie Wancket, and Paula McKibbon. These girls also ran the 800-meter relay and again came in 5th. Overall the girls track team was not very successful but gained a lot of experience. Look out world; here I come! In September a few members of the staff spent a day at Augustana College to pick up some pointers on yearbook design and layout. And while members of the advertising staff went to neighboring towns to sell ads, the rest of us worked diligently on our pages. Taking and cropping pictures, doing rough and final layouts, and writing ana typing copy kept us busy throughout the year. But finally, after long hours and lots of sweat, we met our LAST deadline! Staff members gather round to look over pictures and layouts. Val searches for new ideas in another school's yearbook. Here's the Annual staff in its more natural state. Though we were all a little crazy for joining the staff in the first place, we were even crazier for seeing the year through. Nevertheless, we succeeded in publishing our masterpiece. Under the supervision of Mr. Moens, the Co-op Program has placed AHS students in jobs ranging from bookkeeping to carpentry, from farming to fast foods. The Co-op students gain valuable experience through their various jobs and thus are able to compete effectively, once thev leave high school, in a tight job market. And it involves the humorous conflicts that result when the daughter of the rather strange Vanderhof family falls in love with the son of a very proper and well-to-do family, the Kirbys. Though his life was short, Bill left a lasting impression on the hearts of his teachers and fellow students. He will always be remembered. A Child Loaned I'll lend you for a little time A child of Mine, He said, For you to love the while he lives, And mourn for when he's dead. It may be six or seven years Or twenty-two or three. But will you, till I call him back, Take care of him for Me? He'll bring his charms to gladden you, And should his stay be brief, You'll have his lovely memories As solace for your grief. I cannot promise he will stay, Since all from earth return, But there are lessons taught down there I want this child to learn. I've looked this wide world over In my search for teachers true. And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes, I have selected you; Now will you give him all your love. Not think the labor vain, Nor hate Me when I come to call And take him back again? I fancied that I heard them say, Dear Lord, Thy will be done. For all the joy Thy child shall bring, The risk of grief we'll run. We'll shelter him with tenderness, We'll love him while we may, And for the happiness we've known. Forever grateful stay. But should the angels call for him Much sooner than we planned, We'll brave the bitter grief that comes And try to understand. 94 Edgar A.
