ATKINSON HIGH SCHOOL ATKINSON, ILLINOIS VOLUME 37 r Life in our community, Atkinson, Illinois, has been centered around farming, but has expanded through the years. In fact, our town is known as the 1 'Hog Capital of the World'1. Many of us are sons and daughters of farmers. We are accustomed to country living and it is doubtful any of us would want to change. Education has always been an interest to the community and continues to be so. We are proud of our school and the long way it has come in these years. Just as other students across America, we participate in a variety of activities. We compete in football, basketball, volleyball, and track. Some of us are cheerleaders, band members, or members of various clubs. But there is something that sets us apart from the others — We are farm kids. We at A.H.S. are proud of our farm background and glad that we have been, ' 'Raised on Country Sunshine.1' 3 THE YEAR 4 BEGAN __ 5 6 8 SOCIAL E V E N T S On Saturday October 14, 1978, the annual Homecoming dance was held in the old gym at the Atkinson High School. This is the third year for the Close-Up program in Atkinson and we hope it continues to grow and get more students involved each year. 37 AFS COMES TO Lourdes with her AFS sister Angie Minnaert My name is Lourdes Elena Dominguez. I am from Tegucigalpa , Honduras, South America . I have five sisters and one brother. My father, Dr. Jose R. Dominguez, is a general doctor and my mother, Olivia de Dominguez , helps him as a nurse. In my school I was a Junior. We go to school in the middle of February and we end in October . My school is just for girls and we wear uniforms. Many of the schools of my country are like this, schools just for girls and schools just for guys. Also we can't choose our classes, it depends on what year of school you are in. You have to take 9 subjects, among them 4 are the most important. English you have to take every year. 1 took 11 years of English. In sports, the most popular school sports are basketball and volleyball. Since 1 won the scholarship, I came here to Atkinson to be with my new family, the Min-naerts. They have oeen like a second family. People in the school and the people from the town have been really nice to me. With this in Atkinson I have learned a lot of things and made a lot of friends. 1 tried to give a little view of my country in different ways. I hope that like me, my family and friends have learned something too, and I hope with this experience you keep getting AFS students. Because for me, this has been a very good year, and that I will never forget it. Lourdes Elena Dominguez 31 COMPLIMENTS OF THE FHA ATKINSON Ilpo and his AFS brothers, the Rahns. llpo Hopefully everyone already knows that 1 am from Finland, but more specifically from the Central Finland and the west coast which is only about 200 miles from the Swedish coast. The name of my town is Kokkola, and it has about 34,000 people. My mother works in a bank as a secretary , and my father works in a highrise as a caretaker in Helsinki the capital. In Finland we go to school 12 years, three of which are high school. There are about 60 hours that you have to cover during two weeks in high school. Subjects are generally academic, except for P.E. Right before graduation we take a test from five areas that you have covered through the three years. I came to the New Continent after my first year of high school. Since then 1 have learned alot of things. Living with the Rahn's, my family, I had to get along with three brothers. So far we have gotten along great, and my parents are fine people. What else would you possibly want. TTiis whole year has definitely been worth the effort.
