reflections 1971 tiger volume 30 atkinson senior high atkinson, Illinois Time is fleeting by, What is now, only too soon Becomes Reflections of a Golden Past; What was once a camouflage of unseen horizons Now becomes a clouding haze of memories Bound between the pages of this cloth-covered book; Only now do these memories, some dazzled Around Green and Gold, Others flourished in Red, White, and Blue, Remind us of our learning. Education . . . Textbooks . . . Social Awareness . . . Good Sportsmanship . . . These are all multi-faceted mirrors of a Time that is Past And Promises of Future Reflections That are yet to become Reality. Time is moving onward But remember people . . . living. The light changes And we are sobered, Awed by the marvels and questions Of learning and growing. At times we must be serious In seeking to better ourselves. The world calls us To prepare for the future, To meet today's demands With patience and diligence. Yet all is not learned Between the covers of books. This we understand as we move onward, And remember people . . . seeking. We experience, each day, Myriads of feelings. Plunging into a world Not ours alone, We delight In the companionship of friends, In sharing moments Of laughter and relaxation. The eagerness of youth, Bubbling with joyous exuberance, Becomes an integral part of our life. Yet as it passes, Savor each clear, sparkling moment, And remember people . . . together. The world stands before us, Unconquered and challenging. We must call forth All our strength and determination In the struggle for recognition. It is not easy, For we must strain to grasp That which lies beyond our reach. We grapple with puzzling questions And impossible situations. In the heat of competition, We strive to achieve, Anxious, yet exhilarated. One day, we will reach the top, Our goals attained, pause there, And remember people . . . trying. administration .... 31 tim anderson doug bade susan becker gloria carton judy carton ellen causemaker vicki crockett janice de crane craig de decker kathy de may dan de reu joe dwyer linda evans bob Homing rock gentry susan gray 1 f. ted hamer jim heller robbie hoogerwerf nick jennes randy junior The freshmen girls are SOMETIMES silent! The DeKalb Award was presented to Keith Moens for outstanding work in Agriculture. Seniors With the aid of Principal John Larimer and Superintendent Donald Dolieslager, plans for the new school were begun, revised, and finally completed. This is just a beginning, however, to the long task of the actual construction. Their enthusiasm for the project has made it more than just a dream--soon it will be a reality. Secretaries Barb Snider and Lori Skrinski kept a very busy schedule throughout the course of the year. Administration Keeps School, Students Running Smoothly Throughout Year The school librarian, Mrs. Virginia Emigholz, creates a friendly atmosphere in which to read and study. A helping hand to students who are in search of a book or magazine is just one of many of her cooperative talents. The school board introduced many new changes into the school system this year. Among the changes are: revision of the dress code, installation of a candy machine, reopening of the student lounge, introduction of a co-op program. The board members are as follows: Elmer Minnaert, president; Jim Hamer, secretary; Ron Obrecht; Rich Gentry; Merrill Taber; Stanley Heller; William Sears. Faculty Awaken Students—Arouse ... The production of Cheaper by the Dozen was the result of Mr. Harry Kaminski's direction as advisor of the Drama Club. A graduate of Illinois State University, he creates a more exciting atmosphere in the speech and English courses which he teaches. With a willing and helpful attitude, Mr. Kaminski finds time to encourage and understand his students and their goals in life. The math department is very lucky to have Mrs. Vicky Slaymaker this year. As a first year teacher at Atkinson, she does not have a classroom of her own, but finds herself in every area of the school teaching Algebra I,II, Geometry, and Advanced Math. Mrs. Slaymaker enjoys life and everyone around her, and for those people, makes an atmosphere of work enjoyable. We welcome Mrs. Slaymaker. Mr. Ralph Moens, head of the agriculture department, is responsible for many of the advances made in the high school. The co-op program makes available to interested students, on-the-job training in the area. In addition to this, Mr. Moens is sponsor of the Future Farmers of America and assists judging teams which have won many awards in the district and state contests. A graduate of the University of Illinois, he is in his ninth year of teaching at Atkinson. 32 Spanish and English instructor, Miss Ann Marree Spacht, is a graduate of Bradley University. She is the advisor or the GAA and the Pep Club, and a great help to the cheerleaders. Her bubbling personality, sense of fairness, and helpful ideas contribute to the enjoyment of the students in their activities. In her sixth year, she is evidence of the fine teaching staff at Atkinson. Mr. Joseph Glattly, a dedicated member of the faculty, offers a complete program of musical instruction. Proof of the accomplishments of his students is the 1971 contest record. The concert band received a rating of good . The contest wasn't the only goal for the band members. A sentimental journey dance was a big event and the annual Atkinson-An-nawan duo concert added to the musical enjoyment of the parents and other interested parties who attended. Mr. Glattly has achieved success in his eleventh year of teaching, and we commend him. Mrs. Marilyn Guthrie, graduate of Northern Illinois University, is a well-known figure at Atkinson High. Teaching chorus and preparing ensembles for the contest takes up much of her time. However, she still finds time to help aspiring soloists. The Junior Class' float was made into a large clock with the theme, Time to Win. Complete with an alarm system and cheerleaders, it demonstrated the anticipation of knowing the outcome of the Homecoming football game. Using the modern-day theme of Sherrard has Blight, the Sophomores clearly stated what they thought. With Sherrard having this deficiencey, Atkinson's Homecoming football game would be won. tm. Music provided by Bright Side set the pace for the 1971 Junior-Senior Prom. Decorated in the style of an old western town, complete with saloon and hangman's noose, the huge gym portrayed a western town motif. As everyone entered, they were engrossed by the excitement. The Juniors felt especially proud of their work, which they had a right to be. The Prom activities began at the Deck Plaza in Geneseo. Karen Van Vooren, Junior Class President, welcomed everyone and wished them a pleasant evening. After dinner, Tom Van Vooren, Senior Class President, extended a thank-you to the Juniors for the delicious meal. Then, Dan DeGrave, Senior Class Vice-President, read the Seniors Last Will and Testament. Senior Vice-President Dan DeGrave reads the Seniors Last Will and Testament. Aren't we ever going to eat? Why can't I get a strike like that? It was a long, but fun-filled night. Can't you see that the ball is supposed to go that way? After-Prom activities were held at Northgate Lanes in Galesburg. With forty lands for bowling, a split-level billiard room, recreation room, and snack bar, everyone was kept busy and happy. One of the highlights of the evening was the drawing of the door prizes with Grand Prize a specially fitted bowling ball. The main activity was moonlight bowling in which the prizes were pizzas. Morning came much too fast because everyone was having such a good time. Under the direction of Advisor, Mr. Harry Kaminski and Student director, Larry Cleair, the annual Drama Club production of Cheaper By The Dozen was a smashing success. Imagine a father with a wife, a dozen children, a maid, and a dog, trying to save time by eliminating waste motions. This and much more contributed to an evening of hilarious comedy. In their many attempts to make the wishes of the student body known, they have displayed unusual skill and ability in bringing about alterations that they believe necessary. As a result, the dress code was relaxed, and the lounge was opened once again. Only through the efforts of these people has the school been refined into a more profitable institution.
