Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1969 volume:

published by the 1969 yearbook staff Atkinson High School visa c For the past four years Atkinson High School has been truly blessed with a teacher who personifies Webster’s definition of dedication. Her self-sacrificing devotion to her students and her profession will leave a lasting mark on all those who have had the privilege of associating with her. In appreciation for all of the inspiration she has given us in our high school career, we dedicate this year’s Annual to Miss Leticia Esquivel. The 1969 Annual Staff 3 foreword The purpose of this yearbook is to record the activities of the past year. If each person remembers a part of his school year when he examines this book, our goal will be achieved. 1969 Yearbook Editors 4 It Is a Time That Frees Us And Joins Us With The Wind In A Perpetual Search For Movement— 6 Athletic Awards to Mcomplish 9 SPORTS Cheerleaders in Action 13 Although the record was a dismal 1-7, the season was successful in many ways. The team had many players who were outstanding. Mike Murphy was named to the all-conference first team on both offense and defense. Larry Vandersnick, John Puentes, and Craig VanVooren were on the Honorable Mention List. The lack of size was a big factor, but the players carried a winning attitude throughout, and they deserve a lot of credit. 15 Mike Murphy Senior Guard John Puentes Senior Quarterback Larry Vandersnick Senior Fullback Vince Carton Senior Center Keith Taber Senior Guard Rod Haars Senior Halfback Dave Saylor Senior End Randy Arnold Junior Halfback Craig VanVooren Junior Tackle 16 Jim Sears Junior End Roger Nutt Junior Halfback Ron Verstraete Mark Murphy Sophomore end Sophomore center We 6 Annawan They 34 18 Winola 7 0 Westmer 40 0 Alwood 30 14 Sherrard 33 6 Cambridge 34 26 Orion 50 0 Rockridge 47 Coach Severino Lennie Little Sophomore Tackle Mark Burgess Greg Snider Managers Coach Thoroman 17 Mike Murphy Senior Guard Dewey Fleming Senior Forward Terry Evans Senior Forward John Puentes Keith Tabor Senior Center Senior Guard Randy Arnold Junior Guard Bob Price Junior Forward Zigers We 46 Tiskila They 49 78 Alwood 68 69 Sherrard 58 70 Westmer 37 65 Anna wan 62 48 Anna wan 45 68 Wethersfield 82 51 Winola 50 66 Winola 51 66 Orion 68 73 Sherrard 52 76 Wyanet 52 20 Zake Combelt We They 65 Orion 63 58 Cambridge 52 85 Ohio 47 78 Rockridge 59 77 Westmer 45 78 Alwood 82 61 Sherrard 60 71 Winola 58 76 Orion 64 84 Cambridge 49 71 Rockridge 73 79 Bradford 74 53 Neponset 67 Dennis Renner Junior Forward Paul Hoogerwerf Junior Guard Mark Murphy Sophomore Guard Tom Van Vooren Sophomore Center Coach Thoroman Dick Cathelyn Manager In 1968-69, the Tigers returned to prowess in basketball by winning the Cornbelt Conference championship with a 19-6 season record. Other season highlights were a second place finish in the Wethersfield tourney, a third place finish in the Conference tourney, and two big wins over Annawan. Atkinson was led in scoring by Larry Vandersnick who also was the top vote-getter on the all-conference first team. Mike Murphy and Bud Vandersnick were named to the second team while Steve Powell earned a nod on the Special Mention list. The Tigers were the talk of the town all season and the players should be quite proud of their accomplishments. 1968-69 Cornbelt Champs 21 y. V. football 4 basketball SITTING: J. Hamer, J. Storm, K. Due to the lack of experience, our team did not fare too well against schools who have had wrestling for many years. However, we did have several boys who were outstanding. This first year was a rough one, but our boys never gave up and they should be congratulated. With the added experience and the knowledge of our coach, Mr. Carby, our wrestling teams will improve greatly in the next few years. First Row: M. DeDecker, D. Gleason, K. Gustafson, T. Minnaert, M. The Tigers also defeated Rochelle 6-5 in the first game of the Regional, but they were defeated by huge LaSalle-Peru in the Championship Game 6-1. The team was led in hitting by Rod Haars who was well over the .500 mark all season. Bud Vandersnick led in the pitching department with a 5-2 record. The Tigers went further this year in state tourney play than ever before. It was accomplished in the last year for baseball at Atkinson High School. First row: L. Detwiler, L. Cloud, K. DeReu, R. Working closely with the administration, the Student Council resolved many problems. The opening of the Student Lounge full time was a welcome addition to many students. In addition, the handling of the dress code became a Student Council responsibility this year. The Summons Committee was created to handle the violators of this code. The Student Council also brought many more movies and assemblies to the student body. 28 First Row: Theresa Becker, Sherry Doubler, Lanette Buysse, Marlene Reiling, Sue VanDeRostyne, Kathy Becker, Connie Croegaert. To acquaint the new members with the club, the annual Wiener-Roast-Initiation was held at the Cleair home. The girls met on Monday nights to engage in varied sports including soft-ball, volleyball, basketball, and others. To celebrate Christmas, a volleyball tournament was added, featuring the two number one teams from each P.E. class. Swimming and bowling kept the girls busy during the winter months. With basketball completed for the girls, a tournament was held for the two top P.E. class teams. After a great game, the girls enjoyed a fine spaghetti dinner prepared by the Senior girls. To provide money for awards, the girls sponsored the annual bake sale. The girls did a fine job to make it a success. To end the year on a swinging note, the girls had their annual slumber party. With memories like these, the year 1968-69 was great. 38 Octet J Octet JJ 40 yW ra Chorus FIRST ROW: Mrs. Powell, Director, D. DeCrane, S. Oldt, L. Haars, C. Gentry, J. Puentes, T. VanVooren, M. While we by no means solved all the problems that confront our school, we have taken great strides towards solving them this past year. Close co-operation between the students, faculty, and administration in future years will bring about even more progress. I ask all former students, future students and those now in school to join with us in making Atkinson High School NUMBER ONE in everything we value. 64 Loraine Skrinski and Barbara Snider; Secretaries Board of Education William Sears Earl Noard, President Lawrence Powell Elmer Minnaert, Secretary James Hamer Lester Buysse Clifford Rahn Science Uses Inductive Keasoning, Add flew Math In the science courses this year taught by Mr. Harlow, inductive reasoning was the main goal. By obtaining the correct answers by himself, the student learned so much more. To relate the scientific material to the world in which we live was the main objective of the Science Department. For college-bound students, a new type of math course was offered by the Math Department this year. Advanced Math was designed to prepare the student for college work. In his classes, Mr. Thoroman stressed the basic principle of mathematics that everything happens for a reason. Gale Thoroman Robert Harlow John Pritchard Leticia G. Esquivel Speech and Drama Added; Sspanol se aprende U Developing a skill and an appreciation of communication arts and the humanities was the objective of Mr. Pritchard and Miss Esquivel in this year’s English Department. The addition of courses in speech and drama enhanced these objectives. Through an aural-oral approach. Miss Esquivel’s students at Atkinson High School learn to speak, read, and write Spanish. Besides formal grammar lessons, many games, crosswords, and songs are used in class to give the students a real flair for the language. 67 Business Math Added; Ag Boys “Cearn by 'Doing’’ The Business Education Department took on a new look this year with the purchase of 23 secretarial-type desks. With the larger desks all classes were held in the same room. The smaller of the two rooms was used as a newspaper-yearbook workroom. The typing classes were scheduled during the 55-minute periods which enabled the students to have the advantage of many more drills. Some of these drills were done with the use of records. Consumer Economics was changed to a one-semester course and Business Math was added for the first time. Arlene Busch Ralph Moens Agricultural Education is based upon a problem solving method, using supervised study in the classroom and practical application either in the laboratory or in the field. “Learn by doing” is stressed to insure proficiency in skills and retention of knowledge. Transfer of Agriculture training to other fields thru correlated ideas is our major objective. 68 Mome-Sc. Mas Zwo Student Zeachers The Home Economics Department worked this year, as in all previous years, to educate the young people to build a meaningful and satisfying life in the rapidly changing, complex world. The courses taught were based on the four P’s: preparation for earning, preparation for understanding, preparation for living, and preparation for participation in the problems involved in the making of a better world. Miss Doris O’Hara and Miss Ellen Lundy, student teachers from Western Illinois University, assisted Mrs. Powell in her Home Economics Courses. Various teaching methods were used this year. For the first time, the Home Economics Department opened its courses to include boys. Five senior boys enrolled in the Junior-Senior Human Relations class. They truly benefited from the new unit, “Chemistry in Foods,” taught by Miss O’Hara and Mrs. Powell, and from, “Planning your Home,” a unit taught by Miss Lundy and Mrs. Powell. 69 William Severino Through discussion and participation in Mr. Severino’s social studies classes, the past is put in perspective in an attempt to understand today. Various units of physical education, including flickerball, introduced by Mr. Fulton, student teacher, were selected by students this year. Among other activities were karate, volleyball, and soccer. In Driver Education students are taught the skills and techniques necessary to drive through an exposure to actual driving situations and emergencies. Participation and Discussion Arc Stressed 70 Qirl$ jCearn Tirst JCd; Buy Maestro Clarinet The girls’ physical education program this year offered a variety of activities for the student ranging from tumbling to first-aid. These activities were designed to develop coordination and stamina. Through competition and cooperation, wholesome social attitudes were encouraged. The Concert Band had a new instrument, the maestro clarinet, this year which was designed to add new voices to smaller bands that ordinarily were not there. By pushing different buttons one is able to have the sound of a bassoon, oboe, English horn, muted French horn, and many others. A contact mike was also purchased this year for the string bass. The mike was then wired to the amplifier. This produced a volume which could be easily heard with the band.
