DMINISTRATION Principals' Message The educated man has been described by Socrates as a person who manages well the circumstances which he encounters day by day, and who possesses a judgement which is accurate in meeting occasions as they arise and rarely misses the expedient course of action. Education is more than knowledge of sciences and arts. It should be an experience whereby the student develops both book knowledge and physical abilities in conjunction with the most important item, common sense. It is the aim of the Atkinson High School staff to develop this sense in our pupils. For without the ability to know and understand people and deal with everyday problems, success for most of us will be very limited. Principal: Mr. William Schehl 6 Superintendent: Mr. John Nolan Secretary: Barbara Snider Board of Education Board's Message As moderator of a seven man board elected by the people, we strive to give the best education possible to our youths with the funds available to our small district. One of our biggest rewards is the increasing number of students entering and completing college each year. We can not please all the people all of the time but hope to please the majority of the people most of the time. A special thanks to Supt. Mr. Nolan, Principal. Mr. Schehl, and the entire staff of teachers for a job well done. The first senior to sit down with the teacher acting as a gypsy fortune teller was JoAnn Ackerson. As the message indicator moved over the board, it spelled out Hawaii. Everyone became more and more inquisitive as the indicator moved faster over the board. She then learned that she was to be the Queen of the Surfers in Hawaii, and in her spare time she would be busy trying to improve the Ouija Board. She is never to be found without her surf board and Ouija Board under her arm. Anxiously waiting her turn to ask the Board about what the future held for her was Cheryl Beschorner. Immediately after placing her fingers on the indicator it raced to Married . When questioned further it indicated she was to live on a sheep farm after being married. She would have three children who inevitably would hate sheep. After hearing this Cheryl had to be carried away from the table. Jim Billiet then sat down to put together the letters that spelled out his fate. John Van Herzelle being too anxious to wait his turn took over the place of the fortune teller for this round. The two then found out that they were to become the world's tag-team champions to be known famously as Fat Dad and Baby Boob . While the fortune teller's seat was vacant, Roy and Rita decided to sit down together at the Board. As the indicator flowed quickly over the board, they learned of their fabulous singing career together as RE RO . Their popular hit will be WE WERE TEENAGE FAILURES. After learning this Roy and Rita turned away from the board to let Lynn Cathelyn have a chance at his future. He learned to his joy that he was to own his own Drag Strip known to all the famous dragsters as Animal's Power Pea Lynn happily left the board to go get an early start on his career as a drag racer. Tension mounted in the group as Rick Clark took the seat of the recipient. The crowd silenced as the words Littletown were spelled out. Probing further he found he was to become the world famous coach of this mysterious Littletown football team known throughout the world as the Golden Arms . Eugene DeDecker pushed his way to the head of the long waiting line. Before he reached the Board he told of one of his hunting adventures--about the time he was hunting in the strip mine and caught a 200 pound polar bear with his bare hands. Finally he reached the Board which told him he would be a famous explorer in Alaska. The crowd, finally collecting themselves after hearing Gene's future, got back to the turn of the next waiting senior who was Norma DeMay. Norm learned she was to be married to a man who makes the Air Force his career. They are to travel all over the United States. As the line progressed, Linda DeGrave came to the head of it. Her long thought-about profession was then revealed. She was to become an accountant for a world-wide chain of Barber Shops. As the Senior Class of '67 searched further into the future, they found Lyn Haars as a great producer of Pease, who when they grow up become little green Harley Davidson riders. Next to take the future into her hands was Kathy Hamer. The Ouija Board told us that Kathy would be a model. The crowd stood around in anxiety to know where she would model. Before Kathy found out, 20 Jim VanDeRostyne learned that he would be known in fashion circles as Slim Jim. Most of the seniors then thought that Kathy would probably model for her famous designer husband, Jim, in his own shop known as Slim's Mod Fashions. Anxiously awaiting his turn to learn what the Board had in store for him, James Humphrey stepped forward. The Board spelled out Hustling Humphrey. The crowd buzzed. What could this have to do with his future? Probing further we all learned that this was his pen name. He would be a famous author. His two most noted books would be Mv Relationship to Abe Lincoln and Howto Milk YourCow in Ten Seconds. This will give Hustling Humphrey an opportunity to give everyone the sales pitch prior to the publication of these two marvelous books. No one should live who hasn’t read at least one of them. Turning to the finer things in life, Linda Lain found that she was to have a famous green thumb. She will own a famous greenhouse known as Lucy's Garden Center. She will raise many great plants, but she will specialize in little Bushes. She still makes many of her deliveries in good ole Irma who will still be running after all these years. Linda sheepishly forfeited her place across the table from the fortune teller to Frank Mapes who had been waiting very nervously in line. Looks like JoAnn isn't going to be the only resident of Hawaii from the class of 67 . This beach bum, Mapes, owns his own playboy club on the beach. Next in line stood Karen Nicol. Karen happily learned that she would be a tough sergeant in the WAF's and would be permanently stationed at the South Pole. Jean Sears was glad to finally get her chance to investigate the future. Jean is to be a world famous artist. She has gained much fame from her very artistic No Parking sign. As Jean got up from her seat, some of the boys rushed towards the table dragging a rather small young man. It was Bill Vicevich. Nervously, he placed his hands on the indicator; it started to move. Apprentice to a plumber was revealed as his fate. He will be a good one to hold the wrenches because of his firm grip- Following was Janet VerHeecke. She, too, was the nervous type. The Board predicted Janet to be the head of a big business firminNew York and also president of the Legal Secretaries Inc. The line was narrowing to only a few, when Bill Wyffels sat down across from the fortune teller. Mayor! What could this mean The indicator glided over the letters: B-I-S-H-O-P H-I-L-L. It looks as though Bill will be a mayor in his little town of Bishop Hill. Sharon VanDeWoestyne then let everyone know that it was her turn. As the indicator started moving everyone heard the sound of Sharon's laughter which had brightened our halls for four years. To everyone's surprise, we learned that Sharon will become a driver's training teacher. In her classes she will stress staying out of ditches. She will, though, teach a special course in getting out of them for those who have the misfortune to run their cars in the ditches. Kathy VerStraete, who had been waiting in the background for some time, stepped forward. Her future was already planned. This was our chance. Would it be true??? Everyone gathered in silence to watch. Hearts stopped as the board spelled Married. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Kathy would live on Reed's Rambling Ranch. 21 Senior Class Wills I, JoAnn Ackerson, will my ability to get home late to Sue VanDeRostyne. Vickie Hammer was elected to be our Homecoming Attendant. Norma Sleaford, Steve DeGrave, and Cory Atwell were elected to Student Council. Norma was given the office of Secretary while Cory was chosen Vice-President. Roz Dean and Sheryl Gentry represented us on the cheerleading squad. No Junior will ever forget the money-making projects dedicated to help finance the Prom. On April 22, 1967, all our efforts came to life in Romance in Rome. We think we had a successful year under the guidance of Mr. Jackerson, our sponsor and our capable officers, Steven Savage-president, Dewey Floming-vice-president, Kathy Becker-secretary, and Tari Anderson-treasurer. The first main activity for us as a class was the building of our Homecoming float entitled. We'll whip 'em tonight. Our attendant was Tari Anderson. Following was the Turnabout Dance with Keith Taber as our sophomore attendant. The winter snows didn't stop the sophomores from having a class swimming party. As a climax to our sophomore year, we looked to the future by choosing our class rings. Two years of A. H. S. are behind us and leave us with only memories. 28 T. Anderson K. Becker B. Buysse J.
