Page 67 Pat § Sal's Message Again the time of year has come when we, the editors, wish to explain the reasons for printing this 66 Tiger. During our twelve years of school together, we have been good friends. We have made many new friends and have lost many old friends; but we have always stuck together through thick and thin These people that have crossed our path, will always be remembered. Throughout our lives, we will always have friends, some of whom we will never meet. Among these are the boys in Viet Nam. You may ask why we consider these boys our friends. We do so for one main reason--they are fighting for us and for our world peace. We want to show our appreciation to these boys in their strive for democracy and liberty. Our second reason for printing this book is to capture for the future the memory of the events and happenings at A. H. S. this year. We want to show how we can stick together as a team, a class, and a school as a whole. We, Sally Floming and Pat Schaefer, the editors of the '66 Tiger, would like to thank everyone for all the help given us in making this book the best we could possibly do. We want to thank Mrs. Akulow especially for the guidance and advice she has given us throughout the year. We appreciate everything she did for us. Without her, this book wouldn't be the great success that it has been. We would like to thank Mr. Bernard for his help in taking pictures. We would like to thank the Senior Class of '66 for selling as many ads as they did. Without the money from these ads, this book wouldn't be possible. I, Pat Schaefer, would like to thank Sally for helping me do those things that I would not have been able to do alone; and I, Sally Sue Floming, wish to thank Pat for the many contributions and wonderful ideas she put forth into this book to make it the very biggest success. As the end of the year draws near, the Seniors hate to think of the one word that has been in their vocabulary for a long time. This one word seems to be good-bye . To most people, good-bye means good wishes until our next meeting. To the Seniors, good-bye means good wishes wherever you may go, and never again enlighten the halls of A. H. S. as a student. The Editors Sally Sue Floming and Pat Schaefer The 1966 graduating class and the annual staff wish to dedicate this book to the past, present, and future. Through this dedication, we wish to express in some small way our gratitude to those who have helped us and to those who are presently guiding us so that we may reach the goals which we have set for our future. PAST Hearing the word past reminds us of the trials and sacrifices our parents have undergone for our sake. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for the love and understanding they have bestowed upon us. PRESENT Hearing the word present makes us think of the teachers and how they are helping us develop intellectually, socially, and physically. These parents and teachers to whom we have referred from the past and the present, have influenced the achieving of our future goals. FUTURE Hearing the word future makes us realize the importance of the goals we have set for ourselves. We must strive to reach these goals, keeping in mind the importance of efforts toward world peace. 3 PRINCIPAL: Mr. William Schehl Principal s Message SECRETARY: Barbara Snider I would like to thank the students, parents, school staff, and board members for the fine support and cooperation given to our school in the past year. The mutual efforts by these people created a friendly educational atmosphere that was an enjoyment and beneficial experience for all. A special note of thanks and congratulations are in order to the Senior Class of 1966. The boys and girls of this class are leaving an academic and athletic record unsurpassed in the history of our school. The example they set will be a guideline for future classes of Atkinson. In closing, I would like to give a personal thanks to all the people who have made the past nine years the most pleasant and rewarding years of my life. SUPERINTENDENT: Mr. John F. The Atkinson Hotel was filled with many reservations for the weekend. Out of our class of thirty-three, we received thirty-two acceptances and only one regret. Dennis Moon, a matador in Spain, has a bull fight on this date. As the guests started to arrive, the Mayor of Atkinson, Gary Claeys, gave a welcoming address in front of the hotel. We see that Gary is following in his father-in-law's footsteps as manager of F. S. At approximately 8 p.m., the reunion began. As the guests came in, they were greeted at the door by Edith Couve. Edith received many compliments on how well she is doing at her shoe store outside the salebarn. At her store, she specializes in barn shoes. Libby Oldt took the coats and the hats. Since her marriage, Libby is co-owner of Mushrat Incorporated . She always did like to trap mushrats. Beside Libby were our two bouncers--Jay Saylor and Doug Yordy. Jay and Doug are now motorcycle cops. In confidence, they told us that when things get out of hand there is only one person who can save the day--the new Batman (Ronnie Estes.) After everyone was finished with the banquet meal, our guest speaker, Jim Dwyer gave an address. Jim, a U. S. Senator from Illinois, was known by his classmates for having so much livestock. He devotes a great portion of his time trying to push the cattle bill through Congress. Halfway through his address. Senator Dwyer was unexpectedly interrupted by a loud crash in the rear of the room. Everyone was murmuring. No it couldn't be. But, yes, it is!! None other than Jim Skinny Powell, our famous Olympic skiier had tripped over the punch bowl. It is no wonder that with his size 13 feet, Jim can successfully ski without skis. Ronnie Croegaert and Dennis Baker supplied the refreshments at the punch table. This was not surprising, since Ronnie owns and operates a candy shop, specializing in assorted candy, and Dennis owns a bakery. After the Senator's speech, the celebrity entertainment was announced. Everyone was amazed to see that these were Dave and Dee Dee (Dave DeBrock and Devonne Carlson), the new Dig Dig stars with their latest recording, I Caught You, Dave. Next on the program were the awards for: the person living the farthest; the most successful class member; the man who is the least bald; and the woman with the least gray hair. Since Mick VanDeVoord came from Europe, he received the first award. Mick told us that he is a jet plane constructor and has just invented the Super Snooper, 80 Trooper plane, designed for faster take-offs to Kewanee, Jim Gentry received the most successful award. He has made his first million as owner and operator of a Standard Station where he employs Dan Brieser, better known as Dan, Dan--the Fix-it Man . They sell a tremendous amount of coil wires which they obtain half-price from Sticky Fingers Sal (Sally Sue Floming). John Burden, who received the award for being the least bald, is a reputable undertaker with the slogan, You stab em—we slab 'em.” The last award, the lady with the least gray hair, was presented to Barb Vandersnick. This was peculiar since Barb is a famous stunt driver in the auto thrill show. Featured also with her is Slim Jim De Geeter who for his main attraction is blown fearlessly through a straw. Janis Erickson is his equipment designer. Each came up individually to accept his award from Susie Arnold. Surprisingly enough Susie is now chief meter maid in her new parking lot behind her house, where you can usually find Pamelli (Dan) Smith with his latest dragster. Susie's employer is Groed the Cop, ” better known as Joe Buysse, who in his spare time is coach of the Bradley Braves. Everyone enjoyed Dave and Dee Dee's song so much, we thought we'd ask the Mouth-da -teers to sing a song. We were surprised to find this group consisted of none other than Darla Roegiers, Pat Schaefer, and Johnetta Lackey. After the applause the guests started to mingle among themselves. Everyone was fascinated to hear that Bill Diericx is now a wealthy rancher since he inherited the Heller estate in Mexico. His income is mainly from his large selection of turkeys and other poultry. Speaking of ranchers Bob Angus is now a sophisticated farmer who owns the Jane-a-rosa ranch. In his spare time he does the sound effects for the Sugar Bear cartoons. Also at the Jane-a-rosa ranch you can usually find Barb Dobbels practicing her cowgirl act for the Rompin Derby Rodeo, where she rides hogs bareback. She's had a knack for it since she s been a little girl. We have always known that little boys and girls at play were always a favorite of Ruthie Carlson's so we weren't amazed to find she is now the teacher of Atkinson kindergarten. Since her marriage to Roger Carton, he too. wants to get into the act, so she lets him pass out the juice and cookies to the kiddy pops.. Another surprise to everyone, was to hear that our own Tom De Grave is actually a bookkeeper for the Bradford Wholesale Grocery. He always was a perfectionist in bookkeeping! As the reunion drew to a close, tears were shed as everyone realized they would be leaving his old classmates and going separate ways. Each now knows that The Foundation of Life js_built with the Bricks of Character. Even though tears were shed we all knew that these bricks of character of 1966, which have built our foundation of life, look forward to meeting again for another reunion in 20 years. Dear Diary, It seems like only yesterday that 30 green freshmen entered the halls of A. H. S. However, it has been three years since that first day. Since that day we have unfortunately lost John Rumley, John Batzkiel and Lonnie McKune, but we gained Monte Savage in our sophomore year. This year our junior representatives in the Student Council were Linda DeGrave, Linda Reiling, and Jean Sears. The junior class was proud to have Rick Clark as Vice-President of Student Council. The fans of the Tigers were cheered on by three junior girls, Lynette Taber, Cheryl Beschomer. and Rita VanDeRostyne. The Homecoming Dance was a great success with Kathy Hamer as the junior attendant. The juniors could never forget the dances they sponsored. These were held in order to make money for the prom. Throughout this whole year we have been led by our wonderful class sponsor, Mr. Bernard. Dear Diary, we, the juniors, have enjoyed this past year at A. H. S. and are eagerly awaiting our final year. 26 R. C'ark J. Ackerson C. Beschorner J. Billiet L. Cathelyn C. DeDecker L. DeGrave N. DeMay S. Estes L. Haars K. Hamer J. Humphrey L. Lain F. Mapes K. Elected to represent our class on the Student Council were Cory Atwell and Norma Sleaford. Roz Dean and Sheryl Gentry represented our class on the Junior Varsity cheerleading squad. Debbie Davis represented our class at the Homecoming as our class attendant. Much to our regret Connie Snyder moved away. On March 30, our class packed their swim-ming gear. We needed it because we went to the Prophetstown Pool. Dear Diary, our first two years were great. Let's hope the next two are just as beneficial and successful. 28 C. Atwell C. Batzkiel P. During the year, with the help of Miss Leticia Esquivel, our sponsor, we had two bake sales. The money we made on these was put toward our trip to Chicago. We had two tiger mascots, during the Basketball season. They were Jerry VanDeVoord and Gail Schopp, who took turns being the tiger. Dear Diary, as Freshmen, we have enjoyed our first year at A. H. AND APPLIANCE Under the Oriental Moon” CANNIBAL QUEEN This is where it all happened--a small hotel in Centerville. Visitors of all kinds came to stay at Mrs. Craig's hotel. Mrs. Craig (Pat Schaefer) and her niece Jane (Sally Sue Floming) always had a hearty welcome for their guests. Bruce Clyde, (Dan Smith) who is the editor of the Centerville Gazette, was a guest in the hotel. He, like everyone else, enjoyed sleeping late after a long night of working. Mrs. Boyd (Johnetta Lackey) however, doesn't seem to think so. After reading the Oakdale Bugle, a paper from a neighboring town, she has decided that Mr. Clyde isn't the man worthy of being editor of her paper. Trying to persuade Mrs. Boyd that she cannot do this to him. Mr. Clyde is interrupted by Mrs. Sherwood (Cheryl Beschomer), who has been asked to direct the Spring Festival Play. She doesn't seem to think that Mr. Clyde is giving the play enough publicity. She tries hard to convince him to give her bigger ads. He ends up telling her he will try. Professor Kent (Doug Yordy) has told his niece and nephew, Mary and Robert Fremont (Rick Clark and Libby Oldt) all about Allen Kent (Joe Buysse), another nephew, bringing a Cannibal Queen to the United States. Having always been jealous of Allen, Mary and Robert try to think of a way to disinherit Allen so they can get all of their Uncle's money. 52 As the morning goes on, the bus arrives and so does Allen. The first person he meets with is Bruce. Allen lets the cat out of the bag and tells Bruce that the story about the Cannibal Queen was just a way of getting money from his Uncle. Bruce is really sick, but he finally gets a sudden inspiration as Brenda Day (Sue Arnold) his finance enters. The Cannibal Queen. After explaining the whole story to Brenda, she is very hesitant about portraying the queen. After talking Brenda into the scheme, Bruce persuades Daisy Mae (Roz Dean) and Luscious (Frank Mapes) into portraying the handmaid and bodyguard of the queen. The day goes on and Professor Kent receives a telegram from Allen saying he missed the first train, but will come in on a later one. Professor Kent is bothered by Mildred Wade (Jean Sears) with a lot of questions about Allen, who is to become her husband. She seems very interested about the Cannibal Queen of which Allen never said anything to her in his letters. The real Cannibal Queen (Barb Vandersnick) appears unexpectedly. Mrs. Craig and Jane hide her until Mrs. Craig has a chance to talk to Allen Kent. Soon everyone finds out that Brenda Day isn't the real Cannibal Queen, and the real queen is then introduced. Thanks to Mrs. DeRoo, our Director, our play was a great success and a lot of fun. 53 SENIORS MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED: Bob Angus WITTIEST: Dan Smith and Edith Couve JOLLIEST JUNIOR: Lyn Haars FAVORITE SOPHOMORES: Roz Dean and Pat Carmichael GREENEST FRESHMAN: Lennie Cloud FAVORITE JUNIORS: Lynette Taber and Rick Clark SILLIEST SOPHOMORE: Chris DeBrock FAVORITE FRESHMEN: Barb Buysse and Mike Murphy 54 Varsity LEFT TO RIGHT: Lynette Taber, Sue Arnold, Rita VanDeRostyne, Cheryl Beschorner, and Johnetta Lackey.
