Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1965 volume:

Zke Z Presented by the 1965 Annual Staff Atkinson High School Atkinson. Illinois Zable of Contents 2 foreword The 1964-1965 school year was an age of new fads and favorites. Textured nylons, madras prints, nothing blouses, and zipper skirts were the musts in every girl's wardrobe. Flavored lipstick was also a new addition to their cosmetics. Hair styles among the girls varied from the still popular flip to the new up-dos with a false braid or two attached, and who could forget the rage of pig-tails. The dances of this year were the jerk and the freddy. Among the popular songs were Downtown . Last Kiss . Eight Days a Week . This Diamond Ring”, Mrs. Brown. You Have a Lovely Daughter , and Rhonda . Favorite television shows included the new evening soap opera, Peyton Place and the swinging Shindig . As for foods. Pepsi and Pizza remained the all around favorites. The College-cut remained the boys favorite hair-cut. White levies dominated their new fads. The 1965 TIGER, as you will soon notice, is somewhat different. We have tried to tie all the events of this year under a theme, which is our school song. We felt that our song was not only appropriate for sports, but for all the activities of the year. We hope that you will feel the same. It is our hope that each and every person who glances through the following pages will be able to relive, in some fractional part, the joys and the sorrows that filled the 1964-1965 school year. _ .. Theresa Cauwels Co-editors- „ , Margaret Boelens Dedication MISS ARLENE BUSCH We, the members of the 1965 Annual Staff, wish to dedicate the Tiger to Miss Arlene Busch, our advisor and friend. We would like to sincerely thank her for her patient guidance and interest in creating this annual. It is our hope that we have helped make some pleasant memories for her at A. H. S. 4 John F. Nolan SUPERINTENDENT Superintendent's Message School board members are the unsung heroes of our age. Of all the groups in public life they deserve the most praise. They are dedicated workers who at some of their board meetings do not complete their agenda until the wee hours of the morning. Every decision that is made upsets some people. If they back up a teacher who has whipped a child, parents will call them the enemies of youth. If they don't support a teacher, other instructors will accuse them of bad faith. Members of the school board must be master of many things. They have to be ready to grapple with rising costs, selection and retension of competent teachers, and constant building repairs. Above all when new schools are needed, board members must study land values, construction costs, architectural problems and labor laws. What is their reward? Usually it is only the satisfaction gained from doing a good job. Little recognition is given to them for few people realize the complexity of their problems. There are no financial returns. 6 Board of Education Elmer Minnaert Secretary William Sears Earl Noard President Lester Buysse Clifford Rahn Lawrence Powell School WILLIAM DAVIS History Sociology Coach-P. His luck has changed since his first years at A. H. S., however. We find Coach Davis in a hotel in Champagne celebrating after his third State Championship. He is the first coach to have accomplished this feat. As a reward from the Tournament Central, he is given a world tour with all expenses paid. Because of his duties back at school, he is unable to leave on his trip until June of the same year. Coach Davis is escorted out of town by the town cop and body guard, Jerry Van Vooren. From the Quad City Airport, Coach takes a flight to Chicago. At Chicago, he is given the opportunity to see the championship Tag-Team of the world. An upset is taken by two of his old students--Mary Ann DeWindt and Denny Diericx over Dick, The Bruiser and The Crusher. From Chicago he takes a flight to Washington D. C. where he visits the White House. At the White House, he runs into Ksren Laleman, who is now employed as Lynda Bird's nest. Lynda Bird's husband just became President the previous year. While in Washington he visits the Arlington Cemetery. He visits the grave of a leading Republican of Arizona, Mike Nutt, who was assasinated during the speech which included the words, In your heart you know I’m right. From Washington he flies to New York where he is offered a night of entertainment at the Peppermint Lounge. He is amazed to find a reserved table awaiting him by the proprietor--Ray Atwell. Through conversation with Fud he finds out that the leading entertainer is Pudgey Powell, who took the place of a worn out Chubby Checker. While at his hotel room that evening he watches the news where an interview is taking place. This interview is with Richard Walters, who is the President of the Dacron Corporation in the United States. This position brought him so much world prestige that the Iron Curtain has been changed to the Dacron Curtain. Coach Davis is then given the choice to pick his transportation over to Europe. He finally decides to take the Lillybarge owned by Gary Nickerson. Much to Coach Davis' surprise he finds Dave Van De Voord employed as Gary’s big recreation chairman. Coach gets his exercise throughout the trip and also learns the song. Keep your muscles big and strong. All you do is sing along W-i-t-h D-a-v-e. On the Lillybarge he runs into Steve Mapes. who is employed as a United States’secret agent. His title is 008. He told Coach that he was in search of an International enemy. Dangerous Dan Leander. who is wanted for cuttfng holes in the Dacron Curtain. Coach Davis finally arrives in England. After his entertaining voyage he decides to get in a little relaxation. He decides to go to a circus. He is having a very enjoyable time watching the acts, when he recognizes Sharon Van De Voord as the bearded lady of the circus. After this afternoon of enjoyment, he attends a leading night club in London. There he finds the leading entertainers to be The Tuskemeers, ” who are England's top recording group. He finds them singing their last hit record John Bicon's Baby. The group consisted of Sally Vandersnick, Jill Carmichael, and Mary Lou Billiet. From England he takes a train to Germany. While driving through Germany, he is passed up by Pat Murphy on the Autobahn. Coach always said to Pat. Pat. those Chevys are the hottest cars on the road. Ahead Returning to his hotel room for the evening, he picks up the international News and reads that Margaret Boelens has won the title of swimming the English Channel in a time breaking record. Coach plans to have a busy day tomorrow. He plans to go mountain climbing. Boarding his plane he flies over to Switzerland, where he goes mountain climbing. This has been a longtime desire of his. After his own ventures, he views the people watching two famous mountain (alp) climbers reaching the top. He makes a point to find out the names of these two famous men. so as when returning home he can tell of this experience. He is amazed to find out that the climbers were none other than Warren Carton and Jim Van Hyfte. After this exciting experience, he takes the evening flight to Spain where he plans to attend a bull fight. Arriving at the arena, he finds out that the leading matador in the country is Judy De Geeter. At the arena, there is a program between two bull fingts. The entertainers for that day were Daring Dumbo, (Mary Ann DeSutter) and Enormous Ears. (Galen Noard). the human flyers. They are the first humans who have ever accomplished this feat. While in Spain. Coach also visits the summer Olympics where he witnesses Marvin Sleaford, who wins a gold medal in the five-mile marathon. In this smallest voyage, from Spain to France, he isn't too tired. When arriving in France, he visits a famous Cassino owned by Alvin Humphrey. It is here that he watches a famous act by Patty Powell--The Best Bubble Dancer in France. He then goes from France to Italy so he can ride on one of the Gondola boats in the flooded streets. One of the Gondoliers on the boats is Richard VerHeecke. From Italy he goes to Africa to visit Dick Van Opdorp who is the Ambassador of the U. S. Coach is surprised to find Mike (Chief) visiting his cousin. Now that the country has a good standing of government. Mike is trying to make Equitable of Iowa the biggest insurance firm in Africa. From Africa he catches a flight to Turkey. While in the air he is amazed to find Theresa Cau-wels on flight to the same country. She is employed by Ronnie Van Opdorp, ruler of Turkey, as the Secretary of State. She invited Coach to have a long visit with his old classmate while in the country. Coach doesn’t care to stop in Russia, so from Turkey he flys over Russia to China. There he takes a visit to China's largest city. Hong Kong, where he finds several billboards pasted with the picture of Chinaman Charlie Vicevich. China’s leading playboy. His closest and most enthusiastic competitor is Wild Willy (Bill Hamer). From China he takes a boat to Japan, where he catches a flight to Hawaii at the Egert International Airport. In his short stop to Hawaii, he is entertained at a luau. where Carolyn Cathelyn is the head grass skirt dancer. He is soon back in the states where he looks back on his trip with fond memories of the four wonderful years at A. H.
