Lastly, to our parents, who have also given their time, mon- ey, participation, and many favors, we extend our thankfulness and appreciation. With ample gratefulness to all we proudly and eagerly present the Atkinson Tiger of 1961. -i. 4533 in f If A s. lim 4 , . !7Xx lx . ,- 7 -'Q-., - C. To many he appeared to be the clown, anything for a laugh. But to those of us who knew him, he will be remembered for his cheerful smile and warm heart: a friendly, out-going boy, whose friendship was cherished by his classmates and acquaintances. PROPHECY As the 1960-61 school year began to draw to a close, John Sears, the scientific genious of the senior class, made known that he had perfected a miraculous new machine, but he refused to disclose what kind of a machine it was. All he would reveal was that he was going to unveil it on the night of graduation. At last, the long anticipated day has arrived, May 25, 1961. Graduation exercises are over and the 24 members of the class of 61 are eagerly gathered in the Atkinson High School gym, anxious to learn what John has to show them. John and Judy De Decker, his chief assistant through the long hours of perfecting this marvelous master- piece, are now ready for the unveiling. lt is a strange, gigantic machine. Right in the center is a huge telescreen on which, as John explains, we will be given a mysterious glimpse into the future. John gives Judy a few last minute instructions and she hurriedly adjusts a few dials, pushes afew buttons, and we are ready to begin our trip into the year 1981 Lights flash, sirens roar, and a huge picture looms into focus on John's telescreen. The first picture is one of an aged Dick Billiet. We see he is busy working in a field on an elegant Southern plantation. John, with his electronic microphone, tuned in to Dick so he could ask him a few questions. In reply, Dick said he had decided to fly south one winter and had been working here on this Bird seed plantation ever since. We left Dick in the field and progressed to another community in the south, where we found Julie Smith living the life of a Southern housewife. She and her four children live in one of the few remaining segre- gated southern towns. We seemed to notice one outstanding thing about her family. They all have a dif- ferent color hair! One blonde, one red, one dark brown, and the fourth's is black and kinky. Next stop on our tour of the future was overseas. In Africa we found Larry Locke, who had recently left his home in the states to aid in a series of revolts there in the black country. With a little difficulty we managed to slip behind the iron curtain for a few minutes. Russia is still on unfriendly terms with us and it was a little difficult to get through customs. We were allowed to stay just long enough to visit with Secret Agent, Mike Hackwith. He is serving his country as a counterspy at Russian Headquarters. They have assigned him to the position of top mechanic in the Missile Department. Back in the states once more, we made a stop over Washington, D. C. The name on everyone's lips here in the nation's capitol is that of Fred Van Hyfte. I-le was recently elected Secretary ofAgriculture and his plans for a new agricultural program are causing quite a bit of speculation. We were surprised to learn, upon returning to Atkinson, that Ralph Mapes had also entered politics. In the last election, he was voted Commissioner of Roads for Cornwall Township. Ralph won many votes when he promised to use his built-in snow plow to keep the roads of Cornwall Township clear all winter. The electronic camera went to down-town Atkinson and scanned both sides of the street. One marquis on main street especially caught the eyes of the audience. lt was a huge, elaborate sign reading Magoo's Morbid Mortuary. As we came in closer we could read the small print on the door, For more informa- tion, contact lens. We went inside to ask Gary how the undertaking business was going. In the course of conversation he happened to mention his model in the front window and how proud he was of this particular masterpiece. We failed to notice it on the way in and went back for a second look. There we found Kathie Brieser, posed in an open casket as an example of Gary's fiendish work. The next stop was Hollywood. It seems quite a few members of our class became famous stars. Karen Van Opdorp is seen all over the country on TV in the famous BIG OTIS ads on the Yogi Bear Show. ln her spare time, she runs a small farm which she has covered with briar bushes where she raises rabbits. ln his old age, Roger Williams' hair is becoming streaked with black. Roger took up piano playing a few years back and has become a famous professional. Once in a while he returns to the Geneseo Frostop to play dinner music at this favorite haunt of his high-school days. Bill Carmichael has climbed to fame and stardom as a singing cowboy on a Saturday Night Western on television. He chose an old nickname as his professional name--Billy Briar. The Lawrence Welk show is still a favorite in the year 1981. We stopped in while they were taping a new show to visit with Arvid Hagberg, who is employed by Lawrence as the operator of his bubble machine. James Cauwels hated to leave all his old Atkinson buddies, so he also went to Hollywood. Here he em- ployes his talents at Jacques Beauty Salon. Everyone knows what an authority he was on ha i rd o ' s in high school. Three girls from the '61 class have entered the world of business. Sharon Longeville is busy putting her commercial training to good use by loaning out money at interest. Sharon calls her business the Burr Debt Company. Mary Kay Van Vooren has opened up her own restaurant. Her specialty on the menu is a combination of banana splits and hot dogs which everyone agrees is very good. Carol Ericksen's business is called Rent-A-Machine. She claims to have available for rent everything from motorcycles to snowplows. We are once more taken back to Atkinson, and we observe that something new has been added. Gerilyn Geuns has opened up Buddy's Bowling Alley, the first ever to be operated in Atkinson. She decided to set- tle down in her old home town after winning the women's professional bowling championship in the year 1978. The class of 1961 has produced only one millionaire. Bill Noord became quite prosperous after clean- ing out his basement, and tuming the empty bottles in for the refund. It seems he has been collecting them for years. Bill hired Julianne Mapes to keep him in toothpicks. She has a nice business going for her on her splinter farm south of Atkinson. John McKibbon is currently in the limelight as far as the sports world is concerned. A few weeks ago, they held the World Olympics here in Atkinson and John walked off with the high jump championship. The last stop John's fantastic future foretelling machine makes tonight is in Chicago. Here we find Carolyn Moens living an ordinary life as housewife and mother. She is kept busy with her two chi ld ren which she has named Heckel and Jeckel Crowe. Teresa Van De Woestyne is found at Argon Laboratories near Chicago. She works day and night, d es - perately trying to perfect a new kind of insecticide which she claims will completely wipe out those nasty little bugs that keep biting her. John motions to Judy and again she begins turning dials and pushing buttons. As the roar of the machine dies, the picture begins to fade and the gym becomes completely quiet. Each member of the class seems to be picturing him or herself as John has just done. Then everyone begins talking at once. That's what I'll be doing? I don't believe it. lt isn't possible. It isn't true, is it? Thank heavens for Toni home permanents. You say Carol went to Muscatine? M - .n., t y ',e'if Someday I'11 be a scientist. Oh Alice, you say the sweetest things. We became official A. H, S. students on Initiation Day given by the sophomore class. Our attire consisted of: boys--high heels, diapers, doll, make-up, swimming cap, leotards, and wool sweaters, girls--no make-up, uncombed sham- pooed hair, swim fins and mask, and a winter coat. Surviving the punishment by the sophomores and the upperclassmen, we felt like real members of A. H. S. Student Council members for the freshman class were Ierilyn Storm and Dennis Van Mennen, C he er - leaders chosen for the 1960-61 season were Kathy Verkruyse and Lories Neulieb. Janet DeSutter represented our class in the annual Homecoming Dance. Our class was active during the year with boysrepresenting us in football, basketball, track, and base- ball and most of the girls belonged to chorus, G. A. A. , and F. H. A. As class officers we elected Lories Neulieb, Presidentg Tom Nolan, Vice Presidentg Denny Van Mennen, Secretaryg and Jim Buysse, Treasurer, Our class sponsor was Mr. Allison. To celebrate the year ended, our class enjoyed a show, bowling, and refreshments. 623'-iz 445-wh. .4 5 . u K l Q ,. Lories Neuleib David C athelyn ,fx , 1 Cheryl De May ,Q . H. S. Baseball Team had a fairly successful year. The team included three seniors, four jun- iors, three sophomores, and five freshmen. Their biggest handicap was the lack of a front line pi t cher. Gary Goreth, a senior, and Tom Nolan, a freshman, did a creditable job, but the depth was not evident in the pitching staff. We lost two top players, Gene De Sutter, and Keith Noard, early in the year. Seniors who we will miss are Dick Billiet, Ralph Mapes, and Gary Goreth.
