During the first semester we gained a new freshman, Kitty Cleair, making our class 25 strong. The class officers for this year were: Gerry Franks, President; Greg Pacquer, Vice-President; Ruth Martens, Secretary; Ray Krause, Treasurer. Our class sponsor was Mr. Harkey. Representing our class for Homecoming Attendant was Ruth Martens. Jean Verkruyse and Lavern Neulleb were our Carnival attendants. Sophomore Year With the enrollment of a new student Dick Nicol, our class was enlarged by one, which made a total of 26. During this year we lost Sherry DeSmlth, who transferred to Florida, leaving our class enrollment at 25 again. This was the year in which we initiated the Freshmen. It was the first year that the sophomores got the dirty end of the deal, cleaning up the stage. As sophomores we raised funds by selling magazines, candy, and by having raffles. The students which we elected as officers of our class for this year were: President, Greg Pacquer; Vice-President, Marilyn Rahn; Secretary, Roseann Powell; Treasurer, Jean Verkruyse. Miss Harris was our class advisor for the first semester and Mrs. Harbor was our advisor for the second semester. Ilene VerHecke was chosen for our Homecoming attendant. Our carnival attendants were Gerry Franks and Marilyn Rahn. Junior Year As Jolly Juniors our enrollment went down to only 23 students. Absent were Bonnie Shaw and Caroline Clark During our Junior year we were active in many activities and organizations as well as being well represented in sports. Our Junior play, Papa Says No! was a great success. The biggest event of this year to us was the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme of our Prom was Shangrala and all the decorations represented the orient. Our officers elected were: President. Jean Verkruyse; Vice-President, Dick Nicol; Secretary, Roseann Powell; Treasurer. Ruth Martens. Mr. Allison was our class Sponsor. Senior Year At the beginning of this year we had an enrollment of 23 students. During the year, we lost Ilene VerHecke leaving our class with a total of 22. Ilene was transferred to Geneseo. At the beginning of the second semester, we acquired a new student Jim Lievens, which now brought our class back to 23. Our class Officers were: President, Ray Krause; Vice-President, Marilyn Rahn; Secretary, Dick Nicol; and Treasurer, Greg Pacquer. Several of our girls and boys held other offices in organizations. We had many boys representing us in basketball, football, track, and baseball. Ruth Martens was crowned Queen and Harold Vandersnlck was crowned King of our Homecoming. For our Sweetheart Dance this year, Dolores Cauwels was crowned Sweetheart and Jim Windy was crowned the Heartthrob. During the year we worked hard to finance our trip to New York and Washington. We made part of our money from the Senior Play, Cornin’ round the Mountain, Carnival, bake sales, farm sales, and magazines and stationery sales. Our class sponsor and chaperon for our Senior trip is Coach Bill Schehl. y Ui ;,yiti, , ifi .f . 1 Class Will | High I fo11o We, the class of I960, being of sound mind and about to depart from Atkinson School, do hereby devise, give, and bequeath our several belongings to the following people, in this our first and last will and testament. 1. Prophecy On May 26, 1970, Coach Schehl started on his daily routine to pick up his hat and pitchfork from the garage to till the soil for the fall harvest. As he grabbed for his hat he found it missing, and after further observation he discovered his pitchfork was also missing. He immediately began to look for clues to the whereabouts of his valuable possessions. Looking very closely he discovered something shiny by the garage door. He picked up the article and found it to be a 1960” class ring from Atkinson High School (the initials missing.) After thinking it over, he decided to visit the Atkinson High School to secure the names of all the students in the class of '60. After he secured the names, he started his investigation with the members of the class who lived in Atkinson. Finding Dolores Cauwels now being head bookkeeper at Blanche's Cafe, he questioned her about his missing possessions. She told him she knew nothing about them. Heading down the boulevard he saw the sign, Bowl and Snip Barber Shop, he found Frank Wyffels owner of the shop, who was cutting Mike Yordy's hair. Mike had taken time off from his job modeling Western Jeans for Mad Magazine, to get his hair cut. Coach Schehl questioned both of the boys and found them not guilty. Before he left, the boys told him that he should visit Jim Lievens who was running a two swarm honey-bee ranch just outside of town. Becoming even more bewildered about his missing pitchfork and hat, he headed for Jim's place. Visiting with Jim for awhile, he found out that Greg Pacquer was at the local tavern still looking for Beethoven's Unfinished Fifth. Greg, as usual, was too busy to have played such a practical joke. Coach being determined, as usual, headed for Cricket City in which he had heard Kitty Cleair had just won the Cricket City Marble Tournament. After talking to her for awhile he also found out that she was head nurse there. Advancing on down the street he found a manufacturing company with a sign which read, Bananna Flavored Dog Biscuits, owner Gerry Franks. Gerry told Coach he had lived there for five years and was kept very busy with factory competition. After a little thought Coach decided New York would be his next stop. There he found Dennis Jones, rehearsing for his latest role as Dracula in a horror movie. Dennis being in New York all this time couldn't possibly have been guilty. He gave Coach directions to a beauty shop where Roseann Powell was head operator. She was striving hard to meet her motto, Let us do you over, provided it's not too late. Seeing her class ring on her hand, he then crossed her off his list. Moving on to the other side of the studio he found Lavern Neulieb, New York's latest rock and roll star singing his latest hit Ring-a-ding Dyant. Lavern asked Coach to stay for supper and visit his brother Lynn Neulieb, who had just finished his fifth novel entitled, Mickey Mouse Visits Atkinson High School, Both boys said they didn’t have the slightest idea of who could have done it, but they thought it was a clever joke. After supper, Coach decided while he was in New York he could go to a night-club. To his surprise, he saw the band leader was Ray Krause leading his band called the Icabod Tooters. Knowing Ray was busy with his orch-ches-tree he realized he couldn't be the guilty person. Coming out of the night-club, he saw across the street a sign in bright lights reading, Poopey's Diaper Service, sure enough it was Ruth Marten's establishment. Coach, then decided it was time for a good night's rest. He arose early the next morning to get a good breakfast. Entering the dining room, he sat down and ordered waffles for breakfast. They were so exceptionally good that he asked the waitress who made the waffles. After disappearing for a few seconds, she came back followed by Joe Wyffels the maker of Wyffels Wonderful Waffle Wafers. After talking with Joe for awhile, he got directions to Jim Windy's beaver farm. Coach talked to Jim's wife and she told Coach he was out on his part-time job of spreading toothpaste down the highway for the center line. Next he decided he would go to California. He went to U. C. L. A. where the dean of the .University gave him instructions to Jane Hall, where Larry Carton was practicing singing soprano with the girls' chorus there. Larry asked him if he had heard that Marilyn Rahn got her patent for inventing Rahn's ball bearing roller skates. Then after a short chat with Marilyn, Coach found out that Harold Vandersnick was now staying in San Diego. Knowing Harold as a husky athletic type man, he was quite surprised at the job he now held. Harold was working hard in the assembly line, stuffing pimentos into olives. Boarding a plane on Harold's instructions, he left for Japan to locate Dick Nicol, who was known as Japan’s famous Doby Gillis. Dick said he had been there for years and with that Coach realized it couldn't have been Dick either. Then Dick told Coach he would find Jean Verkruyse in Africa. Coach arrived in Africa just in time to catch the 3:30 safari, which he fcund out later would lead him to Jean's hut. Looking over the swamp, he saw Jean working at her profession of hunting croc-a-diles. Jean told Coach that he could find Dean Roman in Kucla-munga. He then hopped an elephant to Kuclamunga to see if Dean knew anything about the articles. He found Dean feeding his new herd of Dart Headed Camels. Talking to Dean he felt as though he was ready to give up, but then he remembered, there was one more suspect left on his list. When flying back home the plane developed engine trouble and was forced to land at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Having a few hours to spare, he decided to walk around the post. When he walked by the mess hall, he decided to stop in and who did he find but Burdette Floming on K.P. duty. He asked Burdette what he was doing there and Burdette replied that he was still a recruit in the National Guard. Hearing a signal from the pilot that the plane was ready to leave he quickly asked Burdette where his class ring was, noticing it was missing. Burdette stated he lost it before he left for the service, but didn't know where it could be. Coach then pulled it out of his pocket, and asked Burdette if this was his. Burdette said it could be! Coach then said it had to be his because everybody else had theirs. Although it was Burdette's ring he knew Burdette wasn’t the practical joker. Coach, completely bewildered as to who was the guilty person, headed for home. When he arrived home he was still completely baffled. He started walking towards the house when he noticed Timmy Schehl in the, garden. Coach, wondering what he was doing, saw him trying to use the pitchfork and he had his daddy's hat pulled down over his eyes. When Coach asked him what he was doing he replied, Why, daddy, I m just trying to work like you. Coach chuckling, turned and walked to the house. He realized the trip was long, but he was glad he got to meet all the Senior students of the Class of 1960. During the following month we were glad to gain four new members. John Price, Mike Ericksen, Don Walters, and Gary Rostyne. As the days rolled by we had to pick our Homecoming attendant. She was Sandy Vandersnick. Everyone was excited about the Carnival in March. The Sophomore Attendants were Vicki Van Opdorp and John De Roo. One of our outstanding social events that we were looking forward to with anticipation was our initiation, given to us by the Sophomores. The Freshman girls were dressed to look halfway like cowgirls and halfway like messes. The boys were all dressed as funnylooking women. Man, did the upperclassmen get a kick out of us! In sports and activities we were all in there pitching to help out and gain a small portion of recognition. We chose Carol Floming to represent us at the Homecoming, and Peggy Williams and Dennis Vandersnick were chosen to represent us at the Carnival. During the year we were happy to gain, and very sorry to lose, Judy Townsend, but we are very happy to have Cliarles Davis with us now. As the year turned on, we went on a school-sponsored class party. This party wem over just swell with us. After all of our excitement, we can say that the memories of our Freshman year will forever linger in our minds. PROM Silver-sparkled letters glittered We'll Remember Always across the velvet stage curtains as Juniors and Seniors were escorted into the land of Senior symbols. A 10 foot-high white stuffed graduation hat extended to a false ceiling of blue ballons accented by streamers of variegated blue. The entrance was adorned by the smiling pictures of our departing seniors, enclosed in a gigantic replica of the 1960 annual. In one corner was situated a huge yellow-stuffed 1960 classring. The diploma, a fabulous arrangement of white napkins made a stunning effect upon the satiny black napkins which spelled out the Class of '60 This scroll-like diploma extended ten feet high. As the clock ticked midnight the music of Bobby Daniels diminished and all the princes and princesses of the year 1959-1960 proudly streamed from the ball toward greater heights in the future.
