We also ordered our class rings. When we started our,pn1or year we knew we had alotof work to accomplish. Officers were elected as follows: Gladys Verkruyse, presidentg Donnie Nutt, vice-presidentg Joan Dwyer, secretary-treasurer, Jim Hamer and Hank Little, student council. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Buysse and Miss Warren we made money by selling food at the football and basketball games. We also gave a class play, 'Mystery in the Lih- rary', which was under the direction of Miss Johnson. In the early part of the year we were very happy to receive our class rings. At the end of our junior year we gave a junior-senior banquet, using an Indian theme. During our senior year wa chose the following officers: Vernon Van Vooren, presl- dentg Dan Longeville, vice-presidentg Donovan Sturtewagen, secretary-treasurer, Hank Little, Jim Hamer, and Donnie Nutt, student council. LITTLE SIGNS CONTRACT CCP-Cider Pressb Hank Little has signed a three year contract to play with the Tri-City Blackhawks. This move was taken in order to find an able replacement for the aging Don Otten. Hank and his wife, the former Dorothy Mille, are residing in Moline. Dort gave up her career as a bouncer in a leading nightclub in Chicago in order that she could set- tle down and take care of the tribe at home while Hank plays basketball. Dort says that Hank is very busy at home teaching his boys to play basketball so that some day they will be able to form a team of their own with only Hank's boys as players. Good luck, Hank! NUTT WINS CHECKER TITLE fX-Press? Jim Hamer loses World's Checker Title to Donald Nutt, former marble champion of the world. ' Big burly Jim lost to Q clever mover in the image of Donnie Nutt in the champion? of champions checker game last night. The game which required three days, forty- nine hours, and seventy-two minutes to play is the long- est game on record due to the quick thinking of both the contestants. After the contest, Hamer announced that he would not slide the checkers over the board, but that he would at- tempt to get in the chips again by selling insurance for a New York firm. Donald Nutt, the newly crowned champion, declined comment on the game. Nutt says that he will tour the country playing exhibition games until the I.C.A.A. Clnternational Checker As- sociation of Americi is able to dig up another contender for the title. It is rumored that Nutt will be forced to retire undefeated due to the fact that he can no longer see over his mid-section which has expanded somewhat due to the fact that he has acquired the habit of eat- ing ten hearty meals a day. Nutt denies these rumors but in recent exhibitions he's been using a special type periscope to see over that big bulge' of his which is against the rules in champh iomship games. HALLELUJAH! GLORIA WON CM-Pressl Gloria De Decker is recognized as the unof- ficial lady wrestling champ- ion of the world. She re- ceived this recognition by throwing Big Bertha, the Bum tn Madison Square Garden last night. Gloria thinks that she will wrestle a few more years and then tie the knot with her managen Mel Carton. Mel is a former football player for the Chicago Bears. He played with the Bears until the team folded and Joined the Chcago Cardinals. Mel resented being a Cardi- nal so he quit the game and became Gloria's manager. CABINET MEMBER CHOSEN BY TRUMAN KD-PressD Gladys Verkruyse has been appointed Secretary of State by Harry S. Truman. She fills the vacancy left by the former Secretary Acheson. Harry appointed Gladys as the first female Secretary of State in hopes that she could deal with Molotov and make an agree- ment on Berlin. She left for the U. Jersey was doing a business until he decided to refinish the hzrniture. Now Jersey has his own ideas about doing some things. Bow to remove varnish was one of them. His method was to pour explosive varnish remover on the chair and then light a match to it. It really took the varnish off, but last night the City Cafe also took off. Every Thursday afternoon at 2:15 the girls' chorus meets in the English room. There are twenty-fourjmnmbers in the chorus which are divided into three groups: first soprano, second soprano, and alto. Some of the songs we have sung this year are: Horne, 'By the Bend of the R:l.ver,' When.Johnny Comes Marching Home, and several folk songs. On December 17, the girls vent Christmas caroling. Although it was cold, the girls enjoyed singing for the sick people and others. From the chorus a sextet was chosen. The sopranos were Eileen Oberls and Gloria De Vrieze. The second sopranos are Joyce Cowells and Pat Lievens and the altos are Marilyn Vande Voorde and Joann De- Neve. March 10, the chorus participated in a music festival held at Lyndon. The chorus-sang with the combined choruses. The sextet sang That is Jean. Both groups present musical numbers at the gradua- tion exercises. K .-w- Ti, H 4' r .. ,v I Q-42' VARSITY BASKETBALL - The Atkinson varsity basketball team has enjoyed one of the most successhnl seasons in the history of Atkinson High School. The starting five this year consisted of Dan Longeville, forward, Donnie Nutt, forward, Hank Little, center, Jim Hamer, guard, and Vernon Van Vooren, guard. This year the Tigers took the championship in both the Two-Rivers and the Cornbelt con- ferences. In the Two-Rivers we had a record of nine wins and no losses and in the Cornbelt we had a record of six wins and no losses. We also won the Cornbelt Tour- nament, at Orion again this year. The team had a cold night in the Two-Rivers Tour- ney and were held to second by Erie, a team we had beaten earlier in the season. The Tiger squad broke one of the longest jinxs in Atkinson history by winning the district this year. Until this year the district has been won every other year. But the Tigers repeated their performance of last year and hung up another trophy in their trophy case. From here the Tigers went to the Kewanee regional and defeated Wyoming in their first game. The Tigers' next foe was Galva who had defeated them by one point ear- lier in the season. History repeated itself again at Kewanee and the Tigers were forced to bow by a 29 - 28 count. The Daily Dispatch with the aid of coaches picked an all-star team from both the Two-Rivers and Cornbelt conferences. Atkinson placed two players on the first team in the Two-Rivers, Jim Hamer and Hank Little. Vernon Van Vooren and Dan 'Longs-. ville received honorable mention. In the Cornbelt only Jim Hamer made the first team. Vernon Van Vooren, Dan Longeville, and Hank Little were named on the second team. Jim Hamer, star guard, was the leading scorer in most of the games this year. He averaged about 17 points per game. J 1 V ' 3L,,4,,-1,55 ,eAi1Yc Q. :', r Jif' 'f.-'JL' :I .- - ' -11' , , 4. -.
