In Witness Whereof, we, the Senior Class of 1951, do sct our hand and seal, this the eighth day of june, in the year of our Lord, nine hundred and fifty-one. XVitnesses: QSEALQ Noiseless Tonguewagger JAMES GRIFFIN, Testator Silent Braintinker The Quiet Stooge if RY TE 1951 enior C6155 no ec P if 26 Come with me in my jet-propelled flying saucer of 1981, constructed by Willie Jones and piloted by Clifton Martin with co-pilot David Meadows, and we shall visit the members of the class of nineteen hundred and fifty-one of Atkins High School. I shall show you how each has achieved success and fame. We'll begin our trip by touring the wonderful city of XVinston-Salem, North Carolina. Here we find Collins Jordan as principal and Aaron Joyner as assistant principal of one of the local schools. His reputable staff of teachers includes Betty Hall, Vivian McLaurin, Josephine Charles, Vera Reid, Savannah Parker and Evelyn Bitting. At Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital, we find among the registered and surgical nurses Margaret McFarlin, Deborah Feaster, Jessie Kirkland, Lou Alma Ray, Catherine Hairston and Rosa Lincoln. Among the doctors we find Lannie Benson, Betty Smith, Alma Penn and Donzella Porter serving as obstetricians. The Ready Wear Fashion Shop , located on the corner of Church and Third Streets, is owned by John Williams, and its business adviser is William Miller. Acting as clerks and salesladies are: Mary Saunders, Mamie Hammonds, Marjorie Limus, Ruby Dunbar, Annie Sheffield and Elsie Scales. Across the Street is a large sign which reads: Grimsley's Business School . The owner is Luvelle Grims- ley, the manager, Mary Richardson, and the instructors are Vera Hairston, Chiquitg, Dean, and Yvonne Bal- lentine. On the outskirts of Winston-Salem there is a private school for girls founded by Patricia Lambert, Ph. D. Among her capable staff we find Rosa Wilson as home economics instructor, Betty Crump as Physical edu- cation instructor, Billie Boulware as music teacherg and Doris Bruce as teacher of special classes in home management. Off We go into the wild blue yonder! We are now looking down at the L. Richardson Memorial Hos- pital in Greensboro, North Carolina. Here we find on the staff of expert doctors-James Patterson, Robert Scales, Phillip Evans, Jimmy Douthit and Roland Hanes. Serving as surgical nurses are: Alice Bradley, Do- retha Shelton, Minnie Hailey, Mary Fields and Juanita Gaddy. In the dining hall is the excellent dietician, Carrie Cunningham with her well-informed assistants, Annie Floyd and Dorothy Roseboro. Turn the dial for we must go onward! We are now looking down at North Carolina College for Ne- groes, Durham, North Carolina, where we find Loretta Murray, B.S., M.A., Ph. D., as head of the physics department. Also on the faculty we find Vivian Lewis the eminent English instructor and Eugene Roddy the distinguished professor of psychology and author of the well-read book, Post Mortem Psychology. The registrar is the fastidious, but loveable, Glenola Vance, On her desk is the latest copy of the Ebony Maga- zine featuring as its paragon the charming and attractive Doris Williams, exhibiting the exquisite and fabu- lous creations of the world-famous designer, Loretta Hairston. Incidentally, these poses were taken in the magnificent and splendid Jade Room of the Hotel Garner, built by and named for the prominent factotum, James Garner. Hotel Garner is located in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the manager of this huge mansion is the empiric William Parham. Before leaving North Carolina I'll take you to see -Oh we're flying over the home of Eldridge Alston, three times governor of North Carolina. His motto is: Leave it to me, and I'll look out for myself. He is unmarried, but it has been previously rumored that he plans an early trip to the altar with Maggie Hairston. ' A if i Look over there at the Coliseum! There's a picture of the Globe Trotters with old faces I seem to recognize. They are Calvin Price, Bobby Pennington and XVilliam Bryant. Is that the-yes, the professional football team coached by Jerry Crews with his assistant coach, Herman Wilson. 'Some of the players on the temm are: joseph Harvey, commonly called the Stone:rusher,'g XValter Little, the Hard Shelled Snail g and Thomas Williams, the Pryotechnies fmeaning fireworksj. That winged atomic controlled ambulance you see near the field belongs to Charles Hairston. He has a swift fleet of them. His funeral home has a frightful but rather harmless atmosphere. His customers bring him joy and sadness. Along with the funeral home he has the Right Rev. LeRoy Bell to give his cus- tomers that last step forward. Archie Love writes short, corny verses to be used as epitaphs. Enough for North Carolina. We must continue our trip forward. We're at the Howard Theater in Washington, D. C., watching the world famous interpreters and modern dancers of Mildred Little perform the sensational Ali Gay Ha Ba Qwhich when translated means the African Midnight Ramblernj. The group consists of Clarene Barber, Olivia Green, James Davis and James Kinard. Over there in the Smithsonian Institute is a sketch of the instrument used in the curing of pediroscomovallie, the germ commonly called dandruff. These electrical instruments were invented by,Willie Jackson and are in constant use at the College Girl beauty parlor operated by Barbara Blaylock. Her assis- tants are: Janie Crowder, Ida Massey, Mildred Howie, Burnie Sturdivant, Clarine Richardson and Virginia Crumblin. Down the street is a Pediatrics Clinic founded by Imogene McKnight, M.D., a great lover of children. She has a dozen of her own. I-Ier co-workers are: Marjorie McCollum, Viola Hillian, Virginia Rorie, jose- phine Ardery, Doris Carrigan and Audrey Koger. A quick change at Howard University reveals Fred Thornton as president of the institution and I.. C. Edwards as vice-president. Lonnie Cockeram is dean of men. Some of the members of the faculty holding doctorate degree are: Robert Jordan, Ralph Allen, Kenneth Kirby, Henry Williams and Donald Hawkins. Not far from the university is 3 firm of Know Your Better Lawyers. The attorneys who are most familiar here are Charles Clifton, Ernest Lewis, Doris Sherard and Clyde Morrison. A change of scenery reveals the I-Iouse of Representatives and the new Congressmen as follows: james Garrett, Samuel Houston, john Blakney, Romeo Stukes and Thomas Mickens. Daniel Rice, who speaks all languages fluently, is our new ambassador to Russia. Each has been doing an excellent job in promoting the welfare of the American citizens at home and abroad. As I turn the pages in the Movie Gu.lI1F which lies beside me, a startling title strikes my eye-- Love Came At Last! -an opera composed by Edythe Scott and produced by William Griffin, and starring: Clarice Graham, Fannie Tomlin, Mary Vestal, Austina Norris, Dona Ford, Joyce Rush and Ann Martin. At present this opera is being given in New York City, New York, at the Metropolitan Opera House. The eccentric costumes for this opera were designed by the world famous designing duet, Constance Newsome and Audrena Conrad. As I look down, the bright lights, crowded streets and huge buildings only tell me one thing: I am now looking down at the center of the great metropolis, N:w York City. In the center of the gigantic city is a bright colored sign which reads: Marriage License, Two Dollars Down!,' Scribbled below in small letters is, The rest is monthly payments. That's a real bargain! The only requirement is 3 bride and groom and we add all of the unnecessary trimmingsf' The owners are Rosa Hawkins and Azzaria Baxter. The preacher is Herbert Stover, singer, Janet Ma- con, pianist, Regina Rayg and reporter for the New York Times is Zenobia O'Neil. Directly across the street is one of the chain French-cliinesc Restaurants owned by Roosevelt Potter and operated by Willis Black. The competent chef is the French-speaking William Bellamy, and the lovable Chi- nese-speaking pancake flapper is Genevieve Black. Around the corner is a technicolor television studio. The workmen are now making preparations for that long awaited program, Where Did Kilroy Go? , sponsored by Leon Sutton's Six Way Economical Cold Tablets. fAfter one uses these tablets for curing his cold, he may dissolve them in hot water and use as Red Devil's Lye or dissolve in cold water and use asgloor wax.j Starring in Where Did Kilroy Go , fby the way Kilroy got confused with the directions on the bottlej are: Marjorie Linton, Jo Ann Richey, Doris Bruce, Gladys Cox, Thomasina Carroway, Edward McCoy, Cerento Martin and John Williams. Immediately following this program Willie Stevenson and his quintet, consisting of Shirley Gaither, Inez Hughes, Leonard Williams and Shirley Addison, sing songs of the 'Ole West. This quintet became famous for its rendition of Two Gun Mama! The dawn is approaching, therefore, I must hurry before my jet-propelled flying saucer of 1981 begins to fade into the mysterious unknown and I shall have no more power to pursue, since the dawn takes away all of my unearthly powers. Farewell, and remember that our trip reveals that the members of this Class will always headline the news EVELYN SHIPP 'N ACT! 'rr s 62 ,O Yfixf 1 , I MQ' fx Cav! Replacing such stalwarts as James, Webster, Charles Glenn, James Steen, Frank Joyner, Marcellus Penn and Walt Murray was no eask task for our coaches. The Camels' 1950 grid season was one of building due to loss of ten starters by graduation and the Armed Forces. With only one seasoned returnee, our attack was built around John McDougal, 1949 All-Stater and a triple threat back. Because of injuries and illness, Mc- Dougal never reached the topnotch peak of his previous years. The brunt of attack was carried on mainly by new men who had very little experience and in some cases, no experience at all. The Camel gridders with nine letter men were led by four freshmen, two sophomore, two juniors, and three seniors. Our season's record of two wins, four losses, and one tie in State competition does not indicate the poten- tialities of the Camels. Coach Washington, on various occasions, was well pleased with the performanc eof the gridders and hopes the experience received last year will pay off with vic:ories in ,S1. He appreciated the full support given football by the administration, faculty and students. Added to the coaching staff this year was E. M. Ferrell, a graduate of Bluelield State College. His as- sistance in the backfield brought forth a potentially strong quartet of backs. ,ft-x 'ii Q'- BOYS' BA SKETBALL First Row, left to right: Young, Price, Pennington, Bryant, and Grinin, Second Row: Tanner, Hines, Vance, Peoples, Gilliam, and Williams Third Row: Moore, managerg Adams, Brindle, Dillard, Scales, trainer. Back Row: Coach Cary. The 1951 squad was a surprise to all who knew just how inexperienced our boys were. With only Price and Pennington left from last season's pennant winners and the loss of David Harris who was groomed to fill the shoes of Lowery as our player-manager, it appeared that the Camels might be in for one of their season's worst records. Two pre-Christmas games with T. C. Frosh and Statesville revealed unusual talent among the ninth and tenth grade boys and showed evidence that by tournament time our cagers would have to be reck- oned with. A varsity squad of Hfteen players included three seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and eight freshmen was chosen. Another group of ten formed our first junior Varsity and competed in the Elementary School League for experience only. During the month of January our boys caught fire and seemed headed for another banner year, the lat- ter half of the season substantiated what we had expected from the beginning. Due to a lack of experience and play-maker the team dropped five successive ball games by the small total of fifteen points. Any of these games could have been won if the boys had been 3 litt 'e more seasoned. A week prior to the Center Play-offs, our team picked themselves from the floor and wound up their season with an overall record of eleven wins and ten losses, in conference play it was ten won and seven lost. Seeded number two, Price, Pennington and Vance let our cagers to the State Finals by defeating Dudley, Salisbury and Wilkesboro by decisive scores. With our fingers crossed, we entered the finals at Durham for the third successive year, and here again our lack of seasoned veterans was a serious handicap. After an exciting victory over Rocky Mount, we lost to a hard Hghting West Charlotte team. Tribute must be paid to Calvin Price and Captain Bobby Pennington who for three years exhausted their energy and ability to keep the Aatkins team on top. These two lads rank with the leading athletes in Atkins' history, and to say we are proud of them is putting it mildly. We shall always be grateful to Calvin and Bobby for their fine spirit of cooperation, their sincere and honest desire to win for Atkins, and above all their clean sportsmanship for which our athletes are known and respected throughout the State. Thus our 1951 season came to a close and left no regrets but confidence of a strong 1952 squad which should be capable of bringing to Atkins its first State championship. Of this record we are very proud, and we intend to maintain this type of play in the new At- kins Arena where all of us will be on hand to greet the 1952 edition of the Atkins Camels.
