Wcdlugs, I.TI1uruux, I.Rc1d, J.MacDona1d, M155 Severance, G.Scyrr1our, L.Bcdard, E.Ka5pur1s, R.Ru1d Jud Rnw: H.BL'llI1Cll, L.?.1abrurs, T.G1lgu1, M.Bcss1ck, I.Iean, A.Dubar, C.L'Ecuyur, S.Dalron bird Rm-'g 5.Parur1r, N,P1I1Rl1dIIl, I.Bur1o1r, P.Wcngr1s, J.R.hodes, 5 Davis, I,Marum, L,Hachuy 45 ...Q f , n I Music NE of the major forces which contributes to the atmosphere of Athol's foot ball games is the presence of our colorful high school band Many people believe that it is here that this snappy unit functions best where under the able direction of Mr Ray Dumas it cheers our team on to victory with its half time show and time out beat When this classy unit made its first official appearance in the fall at the Athol Springfield game led by its high stepping drum magorette Kathleen Murphy gridiron fans noticed a few changes from previous years First this band with eighty members was bigger and better than ever before The bands men supplemented their uniforms with white bucks a much liked addition It now boasted five glocks which was something new and different There was much style in the new features Carol DeM1n1co and Shirley Armitage and for the first time a freshman was in a feature spot This was Ronnie Water man the band's first boy tw1rler There were other changes too For instance the underclass twirlers were moved to the back of the band which supplemented the rear of the unit The colorguards carried swords Yes this band under the beat of 'Chester Rin done bass drummer with its new march book including six Sousa marches was bigger and better than ever as it followed our team throughout its success ful season The band was not the only musical group which made its first appearance in the fall for with the Footlighters presentation of Be My Guest' and the student council sponsored one act plays the dance orchestra made this year S debut As always under Ray s direction the orchestra gave a fine performance If you happened to walk by room 108 or by the gym during ' X periods or Wednesday nights you heard strains of the coming Christmas concert This concert featured the orchestra the Junior and senior bands and the chorus an event which proved to be quite successful Numbers of special interest were included Among these were Women sung by Lyall Robertson a three piano number featuring Carol Brunell Christina Manos and Marsha Brooks, a Jazz combo called the '5 Sa1nts with Joe Gagliardi, Ben Parker, Dick Lowell, Jim Williston, and Phil Mallet, the Gillette March, Look Sharp featuring the twirlers, and the magnificent Hal1eluJah Chorus from the Mes s1ah sung by the mixed chorus These groups had two other concerts to look forward to, namely, the spring concert which came in May and an exchange concert with Mary E. Wells High of Southbridge. This concert featured both the band and chorus from both schools and the concert was given both in Athol and in Southbridge. The May concert was given to earn money for football trips for next fall's season. Festival time found the bands in Chicopee, where once again they repre- sented Athol High in smart style. This reminded the seniors of their fresh- man year, when Athol was host to the festival. We can certainly be proud of the flashy representation of our school. Memorial Day was the last time the seniors were a part of the band, and they wound up their marching career in grand form as the band paraded through the streets of Athol. Graduation, and a new band playing, for the seniors were with their class and next year's freshmen had joined the band.
