THE RAIDER Published by the Class of 1953 CLASS COLORS - Maroon and Silver CLASS MOTTO - Today Decides Tomorrow ATHOL HIGH SCHOOL ATHUL, MASS. Uur Superintendent MR. E. PERLEY EATON CLASS OF l953 GREETINGS Now that you are graduating from Athol High School, continue to work for the improvement of all mankind. Set your sights high. Man, achieves as he believes. Most of the boys will serve in the armed forces to protect our country and our way of life. Let all men and women look forward to a better life in a better world. Serve America well. Our Principal MR. DONALD DIKE While I am not likely to forget living with any class at Athol High School since 1919, I will with- out doubt remember best the class of 1953 for several reasons. The most important of these of course is that you and I go out together to face the world. I hope and pray that your experiences, the habits you have been forming and your way o f life at Athol High School will turn out to be the kind of a foun- dation that will bring success and, even more im- portant, happiness to you in your adult years. DEDICATION We, the Class of 1953, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Donald Dike, Principal, whose guidance and help have been sincerely appreciated by us all during our high school career. Mr. Dike, who has been at Athol High School for nearly thirty-four years and principal since 1938, resigned his post as of July 1953. He came to Athol in March 1919, after serving as a Second Lieutenant in World War I, and taught mathematics and science, besides coaching baseball. He was the past president of the Massachusetts Teachers Federation and also served as vice-president and director for eleven years. Mr. Dike has seen the development of the Student Council, students leading the assemblies, the One-Act Plays, the guidance program and a placement bureau, funds for assemblies' and the organization of a graduation committee, the cafe- teria and classes in gym. We think it fitting that we dedicate our yearbook to this man who dedicated his life's work to us. FACULTY Mus. cQl1NllY.X G. I.l'.fXlJIpN5 I'lu.lniuu'li j. If .1 .gf ,, l REMINISCING FRESHMAN YEAR The doors of Athol High School opened wide in September 1949 to greet our huge freshman class, the Class of 1953. We were officially wel- comed by the Class of 1950 at the Freshman Wel- come that hectic night in September. Jeannette Brillant and Victor DePratti were elected to re- present us in the Student Council. There weren't many social events that year, for we Freshmen were just getting acquainted with high school life, full of its ups and downs. We didn't have too long to get to know Mr. james McKenzie, general science teacher, for Uncle Sam beckoned him back into the the service. Will we ever for- get the great teams we had under the expert direction of Coach Stafford Connor in his last year of coaching at A. H. S. It was this 1949- 1950 basketball team which played in the West- ern Massachusetts Basketball Tournament and that year's football team which won all the games it played. We were sorry to see Miss Helen Nolan leave, for we were losing a wonder- ful girls' gym instructor, but our loss was Mr. Hymansons gain. Thus our most trying year had ended. SOPHOMORE YEAR After a much-needed vacation we returned in the fall of 1950 to elect Victor DePratti, presi- dent, Robert Purple, vice-presidentg Sally Zack, secretary, and Dianne Robichaud, treasurer. We also chose our class colors and motto. Prudence MacDonald, Victor DePratti, and Robert Purple were our representatives in the Student Council. Miss Barbara Thorner became our girls' physical education teacher, and Mr. Emil O. Taft was the boys' physical education instructor and coach. The Sadie Hawkins Dance was our only social this year. In May we put on our first assembly in the form of a Minstrel Show. It was such a success that it was presented at the Alumni Ban- quet. In june four teachers left: Miss Thorner, Mrs. Grace Elkins, home economics, Miss Flor- ence L. Flewelling, geography and civicsg Miss Helen Ellsworth, Dean of Girls, one of our class advisors, and Latin teacher for many years. With this year over, we realized that we were halfway through high school. JUNIOR YEAR ln September 1951 we looked forward to our junior year. President john Donelan, Vice- President Robert Purple, Secretary Doris Hough- ton, and Treasurer Milda jasins were elected as our officers. Student Council representatives were Phyllis Klein, john Donelan, Victor De- Pratti, Charles Fessenden and Robert Purple. New teachers this year were Miss Priscilla De- vine, girls' gym teacher, Miss jean Wormuth, biology and general chemistryg Miss Phyllis Har- riman, home economiesg Frederick Hellen, gen- eral scienceg and john Dufault, French. When our advisor, Mr. Theodore Berard, was given a leave of absence, Mr. Nathan Hymanson was chosen to take his place. The junior Prom was our big social event, with the gym transformed SENIOR We faced our last and busiest year with a feeling of anticipation tinged with nostalgia which deepened as june approached. Our class officers were: john Donelan, president, Milda ja- sins, vice-presidentg Dianne Robichaud, secretary, and Robert Purple, treasurer. Student Council representatives were Charles Fessenden, presi- dent, Lillian Sherwood, secretary, john Loretan, treasurer, Victor DePratti, Rand Haven, Doris Houghton, Phyllis Klein, and Prudence Mac- Donald. How chagrined we were when Grange beat us in football for the first time in the his- tory of our official football team with a score of 7-6. There were several new teachers to greet us: Mrs. Geneva G. Leaders, typing and geography, Miss Mary C. Dowd, English II, Mr. Walter E. Mendoza, English: and Mrs. Andronike Me- kelatos, Supervisor of Music, who organized an all-class glee club. We all wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Hymanson for all the time and patience he has given to our class on its projects and to Mr. Berard and Miss Ellsworth, our advisors before him. We were soon caught in the tide of events, among which was our second Student Town into a Winter Wonderland. Student Town Government was introduced this year and proved to be very successful and educational. Our assem- bly was a Stop the Music Show with john Donelan as emcee. Remember john Lombard, our prize comedian? How happy those juniors were when Field Day came, giving them a wonderful day at the Athletic Field. Who will forget the night of the One-Act Plays when our class stole the show with Custer's Last Sitn and won the competition? Four of our instructors left with us in june: Miss Gladys C. jensen, English, Miss Evelyn Ramsey, shorthand, book- keeping, Miss jean Wormuth, Mr. Henry Whee- ler, Supervisor of Music. YEAR Government Day. What fun we had in our inferesting town jobs, with john Donelan lead- ing all the students as moderator in our own town meeting. Then came our senior assembly presented as a night club Hoor show. Remember Angie, jack and Kitty in our senior play, Seven- teenth Summer? Everyone agreed that it was the best senior play in years. The Monday morn- ing after that we went on our trip of trips - tl'e New York and Washington trip. There'll never be another week like that week, and we'll still be talking about the fun we had for many years to come. Now we look back on our last few weeks of high school, those busiest days of all, filled with anxiety, anticipation and sentiment. We will re- member that last june day spent with our class- mates in A. H. S. - Class Day, then that night of nights, Graduation, and later our Senior Prom. What we once looked forward to we now look back on. We will walk through the portals of our alma mater confidently facing the future but with sadness in our hearts as we say .... THE GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION BOARD The G. A. A. Board, under the supervision of Miss Priscilla Devine, planned the sports program for the girls. Fewer activities were held this year because of the newly-formed girls' basketball team. This took many hours of practice and patience on the part of the girls and their coach. This year the G. A. A. Board presented their second annual Boys and Girls Physical Education Demonstration, instructed by Miss Devine and Mr. Emile Taft. During May, the G. A. A. presented a May Day assembly. For a final get-together the G. A. A. has its annual banquet where the stu- dents who deserve their awards will receive them. The Board wishes to thank Miss Devine and her assistant, Miss Sally Twichell, for their thoughtful guidance and wishes the future Boards success.
