They aren't supposed to enlighten, for terms, and they aren't supposed to create interest, for we're dangerously near ex- haustion, having tried to create interest ever since we've been in Atherton-in fact the only remaining thing I can think of in connection with the writing of a Senior editorial is that it ought to deal with this life-after-death proposition, in which our life is our future after a deathly four years in which we've enjoyed ourselves immensely. To some, graduation spells romance, a very thrilling combination of banquet and lovely rosesg while to others it appears that we're merely having our props swept from beneath us and being started firmly on the grim and austere road that spells future. Of course I'm no prophet, with ethereal visions arising from a steaming bowl of soup before me, but somehow it is hard to think of any girl in the class of '28 who hasn't something very bright in the way of a future dangling tantalizingly before her. Pessimistically speaking Cand with profuse apologies to the math departmentj we expect to encounter various and sundry angles and points of disappointment-but then, of course, it's the points that keep us from sitting down on the job anyway! f And while speaking of the faculty, for they have made us what we are today Cwe hope they're satisfiedj, our unanimous vote of thanks goes to Misses Watzenborn and Litsey incorporated, who have succeeded after many painful efforts in making our muscles so elastic as to furnish a springing rebound to any fall we may experience. If our misfortunes seem to multiply and our joys divide, what difference does it make? Haven't most of us endured normal arithmetic in order to learn to solve just such a problem? So, collectively speaking, I think this year's crop of Seniors is well fitted forits forth- coming graduation. It has pep, personality and perseverance. I ask you hopefully-could you expect anything more? -Carolyn VVile, '28 X K' thirty-one , ll, ,J ATHERT was , ENGLISH 7 ORGANIZATION Adele Pfingst, President Alice Byers, Treasurer Suzanne Scheffer, Vice-President Elsie I-lohman, Pianist Jane Howe, Secretary Annette Weber, Cheerleader Miss Margaret Heil, Faculty Adviser thirty-two F ATHERT 8 DOROTHY ADKISSON- Dot Ambition-To be able to hit as hard as Dit does. EDITORIAL Wings INGS have always symbolized lofty and worth-while achievement. Before the dawn of history men worshiped things on high-the sun, the moon, and the stars. Wings, they saw could carry them nearer these revered objects. Therefore, to them, wings I Y MX represented power. Today, perhaps, wings mean even more to us than to the Ancients. Our heroes of the air mean as much to us as the heroes of the Greeks meant to them. They are always striving to set new records, records for distance, altitude, endurance. All High School girls are worshipers of heroes. VVe strive to mold our lives on theirs, to search for wings that will carry us on to higher and more noble ideals. Like true optimists we live not in the past or present, but in the future. Yet our English VIII term seems vague and unreal to us now in june. Wle know that it will eclipse all other terms in our school career, but it is hard for us to picture it. VVe know how we shall Cheer as we watch our hockey team carry the ball down the field. VVe know with what palpitation of heart we shall await the results of tryouts for the Senior Play, yet we can hardly imagine the wonderful night when the curtain really goes up on Our Play. VVe shall look forward to the last chapel before Christmas Vacation. Then soon the gaiety is over, and there are only a few more weeks until Class Day, Class Day when we march down the aisle between the Guards of Honor and bid Atherton farewell. VVe hear for the last time the cheers and songs. We shall laugh a little, and ciy a little. Then we place our pages in the log book. It is all over except exams. A week of hard study and much anxiety, and then Graduation, the culmination of our four years of high school, is at hand. Yes, it does seem far away now, faint and misty, vacation only seems near and real. But in spite of hazy weather now, we shall be ready next term, ready to work and play and use our wings. Then watch us try for a new altitude record! -Eleanor Dawwn, 'ZSM K K' forty-two X ATHERTQN 4 2. -' A423114 ' x,1 .4 CLASS VILL our end is near fully aware that we are about to pass out of our beloved school do MXH hereby depart from the time worn custom of bequeathing our possessions and do will afxfx'x'c IE, the classes of 1928 and 1928M, being of unsound mind and body and feeling that that all our property, personal and otherwise, be knocked down to the highest bidder at public auction to be held in the chapel of the john M. Judge Eleanor Hopson Dawson, who presided at the trial, held that since the crime was entirely unpremeditated, capital punishment could not be inflicted. Miss Isabel Moore, chief witness for defense, stated that she was certain that Miss Braun had not given the slightest thought to her victims on the previous evening. The murderess, herself, did not know what it was all about, she said, until the butchery had been done. MO..- COUNTESS GRANTED DIVORCE Cheers and applause rang through the court room when the young Countess Sapolio Spaghetti was granted a divorce today. 'h O U - IFE is glorious! Vl'hen one is a six! it is indeed, sweet to be alive. Nothing mars A 1 one's pleasure Qexcepting of course, the inevitable homework and testsj. Nothing, did I say? Nay, rather Csee Ciceroj one terrible thing. VVe have endured much. VYe have indeed been patient and long-suffering, in fact we have suffered one whole year, but now ah! the time has come to speak out! Not only have we suffered others to use a most humiliating word, but we ourselves have even Haunted it with vanity. Alas! then we did not realize this wrong. Since our discovery, shame and embarrassment have been our lot. Many generations like us have also borne this sad burden, but we, as an unselfish class, desire to benefit generations to follow, and relieve them of this most mortifying, yea, even, unspeakable curse. In silence we will bear the neglect of every one. VVe will watch, without malice, the Seniors receive the attentions of man, collectively and individually. We will forbear when we see the wild capers of the Sophomores looked upon with adoring eyes. Indeed we will even allow the Freshmen to be petted and spoiled while we stand neglected and forgotten. But shall we endure this blight of our lives? A thousand noes! VVe rebel against the name of Junior. Instead of a worthy appellation for our should-be-honored position of sixes attained by the sweat of our brows, we have had to be called Juniors! Horrible word! It means young in years or low in rank and also low in service and standing. Now we ask, 'WVhy should we be called this? We, who have contributed hockey players who score the winning goals, invincible basketball teams, winners in swimming, tennis finalists, faithful Student Council members? Cannot something be done? You laugh! You say we shall soon be Seniors, maybe, and you ask why then should we care? It is the principle! Then spare us and our successors further disgrace. VVe beseech, we entreat, we plead. -Donie M. Carmack, '29 fifty-three , , mm-'HHSE2' ATHERTON ENGLISH 5 Jiffy-four ATHERTON GI EDITORIAL ELL, here we are! You don't know who we are? How odd! 'Most everyone does. V We are the English V's, one of the most important classes in the school. . x' . . x'x'x' The English V's are at exactly and precisely the right place to have a good time. VVe're far enough up to go to the Junior-Senior dance and have class officers, but we're not so far up as to have to begin worrying about college boards, and other more unpleasant subjects. We're on the top of the world, as it were. We are neither green Freshmen, nor uppity Sophomores, nor yet snippy Seniors. In other words we're perfect! Of course there are a few disadvantages. VVe can't go home early for one thing, and there's still a chance we may have to remain English V's for an indefinite length of time after the exams and though English V is wonderful, one term is just right, and enough of a good thing. But, lest you think us too conceited, perhaps we had better tell a few of our feats. VVe, at least a selected few of us, won the basketball championship last year, when we were mere Sophomores we walked off with the baseball trophy, one of our eminent members won the short-story contest. And yet we are only halfway through, in the early morning of our achievements, so to speak. There is much left to be done, there are many hills yet to be climbed, and we will climb them as best we can, but even on the peak of Seniorhood, all of us will remember when we were but V's, half way up the hill. -Sarah P. The take-off was splendid, though a little uncertain. They rejoiced in their large number and clung together silently in their frail little craft. Every now and then a terrified soul would leap out and drift to the ground by means of a parachute called Failure. This group has passed the Freshman stage and has flown victoriously through Sopho- morehood with its characteristic faults. They put o ' airs, pranced and preened them- selves, as Sophs have always done, in such a manner tha the plane became unsteady, and a few more were lost. i Now they are far, far up and are waiting to crash successfully into Juniorhood. Their flighty ways are quieted, and a steady hand guides the ship. They have formed their standards and ideals and are waiting for the last two years to prove their merit and worth. Onward, onward they fly, toward graduation, leaving behind them joys and sorrows, but always in their minds abides the thought that they, too, must carry on high the name and spirit of the school which sends them forth. -M ary Crawford, '30 .5 ix' it ?' sixty-one L I l'llY'f.'l ' Z ATHERT N fp, A Sf J ,4 mmf: wa. chews che f cum:- Tk-..,,..,q.1m'irea.Ipd her e W e u e will Sogn ww Lg, Look uh Y -E2 fhislii' Q' '-22 ,Mr N' V X , '! All during the summer months we looked forward to the great day to dawn when we should be High School students. We knew that, being Freshies, we should be teased, and that our path would not be showered with roses, but that here and there thorns would be scattered. Then came the eventful first day, with the usual confusion but with an un- expected welcome that warmed our hearts toward Atherton. After the confusion we found ourselves in English II. We are now looking forward to being Sophomores, and we hope that we shall possess that air known as Sophomoric that impresses the Freshmen so. However, lowly as we are, we conceive that life is merely 'fa ladder resting on a cloud, and if we wish to achieve success, we must ascend that ladder, step by step. We are now at the bottom, one foot poised in mid-air, ready to ascend the next step. In time we shall reach the top! -Martha Baringer, '31 sixty- seven 'frRQnm 'YTrmm lillldll.
