Everytime I vowed to throw it all into the Tennessee River, I recalled the many students who bought the yearbook, or someone would stop me in passing and ask how the yearbook was coming along , and I knew that somehow it would all be worth it in the end. I would like to personally thank some of my friends who helped me in their own way: Dean Collins, who refused to let me resign (three times). Miss N , who didn ' t fire me when my mind wasn ' t on my work; Mr. Tomlin, who produced stacks and stacks of prints from thin air; Dennis Johnson, who dragged people off the street to help meet our sales deadline; Anne Greg- ory, who was understanding through the entire ordeal; and Dr. Sandridge who helped me over the final obstacles. Thanks also to all the faculty and staff who looked at zillions of unidentified faces and a special THANKS to Jeff Craw- ford, who came in to bat in the last inning when we were losing the ballgame and saved us with his great photography skills. I wish for all of you to whom this yearbook is dedicated many beautiful memories which make a school yearbook special. Covering you with in distress, confusion, love — just a few — And you mistake my drunken exaggerations, the sober truth. As black and smelly lies reeking through each curiously white tooth - And I reach — I reach hard! But nothing; my hand charred. Yet the fool I am and the fool you see Fool fools in the lifelong game; uncertainty. For a thousand different animals are caged up inside us all — Each one to be tamed, fattened and hung up On the Gamekeeper ' s wall. Peel your eyes naked! Jealousy ' s a blackbird in the zoo. HEAD COACH: Oba Belcher ASSISTANT COACH: Harold Murrell MANAGER: Tony Craig TRAINER: LemCagle 1977-78 RECORD: W — 20 L— 10 119 Coach Belcher won his 300th vic- tory last year at Athens, while losing ony 162. This record places him among the elite in college basket- ball. Belcher came to Athens m 1961 when college basketball was at a low point in the school ' s history. But with determination he built the Bears into championship contend- ers in |ust two short years. During the first year the Bears had a disap- pointing season with a 9-12 record. But in 1962-3 under Belcher ' s lead- ership the Bear growl was heard throughout the South. That year Pappa Bear posted a 20-9 record, won the conference title, won the N.A.I.A. District 19 championship, and took the first Athens team ever to the national basketball finals. In ensuing years. Belcher has posted a won-loss record second to none. He has produced three N.A.I.A. District championship teams, with two wins in the national ' THE FINEST IN THE WORLD finals at Kansas City, Mo., six con- ference champions, and five confer- ence tournament championships. In addition the Bears failed to make the national finals in 1977 because of reporting error in games won. Last year the Bears missed their third trip to the national finals by two points. They lost to Birmingham Southern in the final game of the district play- off, 66-54 in overtime. Coach Belcher graduated from the University of North Alabama in 1949 and earned a master ' s degree from Auburn University where he coached freshman basketball before coming to Athens. He IS married to the former Peggy Walker of New Market. They have two children, Leah and Bubba. Leah is married to Ronnie Oakley. Bubba IS a student at Troy State University and a member of the Crosscountry Team.
