Hughes, then national president and head of our English department. Two of our members received national recognition when Terry Vereen and Martha Morrow placed second and third in national critical paper competition, and Charles Boley placed first in the state in undergraduate poetry. Dr. McLin, advisor and national historian, was awarded the honor member- ship certificate and pin for her work in the organization. The society meets the second Sunday of each month, usually in the home of a member, for discus- sion or literary entertainment, sponsors the literary magazine The Gyre, and conducts an annual contest for student writers. Intramural Activities for 1977-1978 included flag football, volleyball, innertube basketball, basketball, badminton, paddleball, ping-pong, billiards, bridge, chess, softball, tennis, swim- ming, track and field events, frisbee competition, bike races, kite contest, and archery. The Intramural Program is a program for all students, planned by students, officiated by stu- dents, for all students at Athens State College. The Gyre, is sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta and published by the Student Government Association. Winners of the annual writing contest, published the Gyre along with 44 pages of other fine student writing, were Charles Boley, first in poetry with From Gates of Ivory ; Leovis Whitt, second, poetry, Haiku ; Gwen Elliott and Mary Ann Richards, tied for third, poetry, with, respectively From the Mill and Throw Away Girl ; Mary Ann Richards, first, prose, with Squish ; Leovis Whitt, second and third, prose, with Rosita and The Cabinet. Dr. Penne Laubenthal serves as advisor to The Gyre and for the writing contest. The editor this year was Charles Boley. The writing contest was judged by the English faculty at Calhoun Com- munity College. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Thomas dis- play the 1977 Gyre which they co-edited, and for which the printer. The Tennes- see Valley Printers of Decatur received first in its cate- gory from the Alabama Printers ' Association. 132 Charles Boley, editor of the 1978 Gyre, shows Dr. Penne Laubenthal, its advi- sor, the certificate he received as first place win- ner in the Alabama Poetry Society ' s annual poetry contest. Several poets from other northern colleges in Alabama also placed, from third to honorable mention. Gwen Elliott looks over the 1978 Gyre with editor Charles Boley. Gwen won third place along with Mary Ann Richards in the annual poetry contest with From the Mill. 133 Dtama This year the plays have been put on primarily by night students. Bob Johnston, director of the Hartselle Little Theatre and various drama groups, has taught night classes in technical theatre, acting, directing. The group has produced tNO Neil Simon plays to appreciative audiences — God ' s Favorite in the fall and The Last of the Red Hot Lovers in the spring. At the spring Honors Assembly, Gwen Elliott was recognized as best actress for her roles as giddy females in both God ' s Favor- ite and The Last of the Red Hot Lovers.
