The role of Berenice was created by Ethel Waters, and the role of Frankie Addams, the motherless, lonely, and dramatic 12-year-old, by Julie Harris, onstage and on film. John Mason Brown said (The Play) deals with torturing dreams, hungry egotism and heanbreak as childhood ends. Both Berenice and Frankie have become classic roles. The play won both the N. Y. Drama Critics ' and Donaldson Award.
