Behavioral science students , under the direction of Raymond McCaslin , sociology chairman , have worked with many per- sons this year, mostly on a 1-to-l basis but sometimes in groups , gaining valuable field experience useful both in career and graduate school. Cooperating agencies include welfare agencies, the Mental Health Center, Lurleen B. Wal- lace Development Center, Veterans Administration, Juvenile Court , and Catholic Social Services . Participating students include Leslie Manaugh, Joanne Brown, Tim Dunlap, Jimmy Massy, Ron Keel, Brenda Britton, Greg Smith, Paul Critten- den, Susan Carriger, Greg Beitzel, Ken Dunnivant, Kandy Gardner, Pam Mitchell, Jane Skinner, Claudia Purdy, Wil- liam Davis, and Meridee Lawson. Leslie and Joanne each had a special pro- tege this year , acting as big sister , pro- viding companionship and counseling , as well as new social experiences. Journalism minors had the opportunity for summer practi- cums in their chosen fields , spending a minimum of 90 hours in assigned instruction and work for each three hours of credit . RIGHT: Carol Malone chose a practicum in news photography with the Athens News Courier. BELOW, LEFT: Sheila McLin sees the show from the cameraman ' s angle at WMSL-TV (Now WYUR), and RIGHT gives weather and market report, with N. C. Milwee on news, and behind them Sonny Sims, who hosts the early morning show. This job required rising at 4:30 a.m. five days a week. T- A ' ♦ Li i 107 B ERVMAN One of the year ' s most ambitious drama projects was the pre-Christmas double dinner theatre bill: EVERYMAN and SECOND SHEPHERDS ' PLAYE, a Sigma Tau Delta project, with more than a little help from their friends in Alpha Psi Omega. Both plays date from the fifteenth century. Hal Beach, manager of WHIQ-TV, filmed both plays for the Sunday program FOCUS. Second Shepherds ' Playe was seen on statewide ETV the Sunday before Christmas, and Everyman , also on statewide ETV, on Easter Sunday. Overall director of the project was Dr. Elva McLin. Introducing EVERYMAN , Cathy Atchley as the doctor of theology warns the audience: Hear how Death comes to Everyman, in the midst of life. EVERYMAN, a moral- ity play, is an evolvement from the miracle play by which the medieval church taught dramatically the events of the scripture . The morality play concentrated on right living. Death, on God ' s command, beckons to Every- man, telling him that he can take with him any who will go on that last journey . Everyman (Paul DeBerry) first asks Good Fellowship (Sheila McLin) who quickly refuses. Death (Rita Achen- bach) is relentless. The Cousin (Kayo Pinson) and Riches (Myra Sparks) next refuse , Riches telling him that although she is a comfort in this world , she would only handicap him in the next . 108 where can Everyman find help on this lonely jour- ney? Knowledge (Ken Chapman) shows him the way to penitence , and there he finds that Good Deeds (Susan Foster), once weak from neglect is stronger now. Good Deeds alone can accompany him to Judgment. Surely Kindred will accompany him , since blood ties are strong? But Kindred makes excuses , offers to send her servant , and the servant also runs away. Kindred, Rhonda Pruitt; servant, Susan Carriger. CREDITS: Dr. McLin, director; Rita Achenbach, acting coach for both plays; Harry Howe, stage manager and set designer for both plays; Lucille Clem, ticket manager; Margaret Biglin, caterer; S. and E. McLin, costumes; Helen Cunningham and Steve Lee, publicity; Phi Mu, Zeta Tau Alpha, Delta Tau Delta, and Tau Kappa Epsilon for assisting with hosting details. Assembled for curtain call: Ken Chapman, Rhonda Pruitt, Cathy Atchley, Paul DeBerry, Susan Foster, Rita Achenbach, Myra Sparks, Sheila McLin (foreground). NOT SHOWN: Kayo Pinson , Jimmy Dykes , and Ronald Austin . 109 (Secunda Pastorum) Directed by Paul DeBerry; A project of Sigma Tau Delta and Dr. McLin ' s Humanities class This second play on the December dinner theatre bill is surely one of the funniest plays ever classified as religious drama . The Nativity is paralleled , from the ridiculous to the sublime - the stolen sheep cradled as the 15th century conman ' s newborn son, and then the swift poignant scene of the shepherds at the man- ager of the Lamb of God , newborn Son of man . Coll knows by the signs that company is coming and at first this is Mak the thief , then , astoundingly , the Angel of God . Unforgettable in the final scene was Connie Prater ' s Ave Maria as she and the other angels (Susan Foster and Debbie McDonald) gathered around the Mother (Kim Sandridge Snell) and Child. How can a smell so vile come from a new- born child? the suspicious shepherds wonder. Shepherds: Coll (Tom O ' Hara), Daw (Ken Dunnivant), and Gib (Harry Howe), Mak (Lynn Terry), their child , and his wife Gill (June Cooley). Mak remembers that thievery is punishable by hanging, but puts that thought aside . Borrow- ing is easier than working any day! 110 t4 Either that woman murdered her husband, or there was an intruder. We ' ve got to note every club , ' ' the county attorney (Dennis Terry) reminds the sheriff (Paul DeBerry) . The neighboring farmer (Tom O ' Hara) tells again how he found the body. It is all right for the farmer ' s wife (Sheila McLin) to stay in the kitchen and fool with those trifles, he says. To the farmer ' s wife and the sheriff ' s wife (Myra Sparks) some trifles begin to loom big - a bro- ken bird cage and dead bird , suddenly erratic quilt- ing stitches , and the memory of a lonely woman who was no longer allowed to have music in her house .
