Athens College will offer a course in World Regional Geo- graphy. The course will be taught by Mr. L. Calvin Aday, who has expressed a personaJ interest in ' the field of geography. Mr. Aday is the Chairman of the Department of Foreign Langu- ages. Dean Thomas A. Rodgers has e)qjressed hopes that this course can be used as a stepping stone leading to a Department of International Affairs, the de- partment covering such subjects as geography, foreign language, history, political science and sociology. Mr. Aday expressed the fol- lowing thoughts concerning his background and the structure of the course: Just saying that geography and travel are my hob- bies does not reveal the true character of a long and intense attachment, i would rather pre- fer to speak about a life-long adventure in the course of which many of my dreams and aspir- ations of childhood and adole- scene are t eing realized. To be adventurous means that one has both interest and courage to ejqjiore the unknown. As any adventure, this has its risks and rewards. Venturing beyond the limits of one ' s country or civil- ization offers many opportunit- ies. In asking how and why people of other countries and cultures are different we will inevitably ask questions about ourselves. New Curriculum by Bob Goodman Next fall many programs will taice on a new face, as emphasis on more varied programs will begin. Already in effect are the soc- iology-phsycology major and the biology-chemistry program. More emphasis will be placed on these programs axid a third call- ed the Social Science Pre Law plan. Of special interest to individ- ual programs a grant from the Kellogg Foundation has tjeen giv- en to Athens College for furth- ering studies in Environmental Ecology. Also Mr Aday, will be teaching a World Regional Geo- graphy course. The new major. Social Science Pre-Law according toDr. Colane the programs inltlitor, has tteen established in order to give Pre- Law students a varied and more liberal background In the over social science area. Colane cit- ed that law schools are search for students with more educa- tionally liberal backgrounds cov- ering a wide area of Interest and with exposure to several professors ranging in different lines of thought. A student may compete for a B.S. B.S. or B.S. Ed. degree covering 36 hours in social science including history, poli- tical science, sociology, and economics. 218 The gyre is an annual publication of the Student Government Association, Athens College, Athens, Alabama. Athens College Board of Trust chooses the one less traveled by and they begin the course with purpose, with an intense, burning desire which recognizes no such word as impossible and accepts no such reality as failure. Athens College Board of Trust indeed! Their many- faceted life is a source of inspiration and objects of emulation, for those who come in contact with them may well call them scholar, gentleman, friend, Because of their leadership, their scholarship, their deep understanding of student need, ca- pability, and their incomparable contribution to Athens College and Athens College Community, we lift our trumpets high in tribute to these men of trust. 225 PROGRAII ATHENS COLLEGE ANNUAL HONORS and AWARDS CONVOCATION Miy 13, 1971. 10 45im PHVSICAl EDUCATION CENTER Processional Invocation Introduction Presentation of Honors William D, Wells, Sr. Pres. Sandridge, president of Athens College, charged members of the 149th graduating class to support their alma mater, to set high goals, and to establish standards of excellence in work and in personal life. Ours is a day of realistic searching, began Doctor Sandridge and continued, Never has any society been so willing to look at itself with honesty and in the light of hard truth; never has any group of people been so uncompromising in its self-criticism; and never has the search for real and lasting answers been more intense. The President underscored that the causes of brotherhood, quality, social justice, peace, and individual worth will no longer be pacified with lip service. 231 Then Dr. Sandridge emphasized that daily we lay bare the vrtongs of our way of life, and that in so doing, we open the possibility of finding ultimate, though often uncomfortable, solutions. In a real sense, commented Dr. Sandridge, Athens College j£, not was , your college. The President then stressed that the future of A.C. is important too 232 ... because it will determine the eval- uation given to their education in the years to come. Dr. Sandridge issued a charge to the grad- uates to keep in touch with A.C. and You will represent the college and the ed- ucation it provides to the world in which you live and work. I challenge you to set high goals and to establish standards of excellence in work and personal life. 233 Dean Thomas A. Rodgers stepped to the mike; Dr. Sandridge moved to the diploma stack, graduates filed across the stage to receive diplomas, all stood for benediction, recessional began, and graduation was over. 234 BREAKFAST: WHAT FOOD AND WHAT SERVICE! 235 W T ■ rij HI?
