This, endurance test taxes not only one ' s resourcefulness as in schedule manipulation and one ' s ingenuity as in divining where to go and when but also one ' s patience, stamina, and general state of health. If a naive, unsophisticated freshman can survive the trial of registration, he has cleared his first hurdle in preparing himself for life in which one may expect the unexpected. Rats as the freshmen are traditionally and affectionately known are the lowest form of life on a campus. To them are assigned the commonest and most menial tasks which they are compelled to cany out without complaint and occasionally with expressions of joy at being able to sei ve. A rat ' s excuse for being is to entertain his betters, the upperclassmen. Any reason- able request must be fulfilled upon demand — regardless of how embarrassing it may be for the participant. To the relief of the freshmen RAT WEEK lasts only 7 days and is climaxed by a sock hop in honor of the newly initiated freshmen. 156 Shine those shoes rat! At one minute after 12:00 rat week begins. Toward the end of the week a Mr. and Miss Rat are elected as best representative of the freshman in RAT WEEK. When all is over but the shouting any RAT will tell you it was really fun. Congratulations Rat, you made it. Plays The dramatic department has not been idle. First major production of 1964 was All the Way Home, a prize winning play adapted from the Pulitzer prize winning book A DEATH IN THE FAMILY by James Agee. The most am- bitious and successful production of the year was a Robert Mulder version of Learner and Lowe ' s musical Camelot. This musical featured both amateur and professional actors and musi- cians. Doggone costume. 162 Lefs Dance From sockhops to Sadie Hawkins dance the campus rocks with music. Dances, seemingly weird and ecstatic interpretations of tribal rites, include the DOG, the MONKEY, and the WATUSI. All that is needed for a swinging evening is a stack of platters, a turn table, and a room full of students abounding with energy. 163 164 166 The Beauty Ball The most formal and most impressive dance of the year is the Beauty Ball held at Christmas. At this time the Beauties and favorites which will be pictured in the annual are presented. For this occasion an orchestra plays, a leadout is staged, and all the girls wear floor length gowns. The decorations for the Beauty Ball are always most elaborate and may or may not feature the Christmas motif. 167 Those who do much work and reap little glory are the students on the social committee. Laborers to decorate the Armory must be recruited and since materials are at a premium talent is an important factor. This is one quality which Athens College has an abundance of. 168 The Judges, Judy Short, Mrs. Redden, and Mrs. O ' Neal. The Beauty Review The girls who are represented in the Beauty Review are elected from the various classes and organi- zations on the campus. The girls are then eliminated through interviews and careful scru- tiny until the elect few that remain are the Beauty and the Favorite rep- resentatives for the annual, and are presented at the ball which is in their honor.
