A THENS COLLEGE Athens, Alabama 1963-1964 COLUMNS Editor-in-Chief . . . Sandra Bonner f Foreword Teaching hands dusted with chalk, Studious hands stained by ink, Victorious hands moistened with sweat, Creative hands colored by paint. Working hands caked with mud, Loving hands clasped together tightly, Worshipping hands folded in prayer. These are the hands of Athens College. ■!mi Athens College is many things both abstract and con- crete, but no matter what part of Athens you are consid- ering it always involves one thing — people. People creat- ing, people living and working together, people doing things and going places. People make Athens College . . . Athens College is people. Registration For freshmen, registration is frightening. For upperclassnien, it is hopeless. For eveiy- one involved, it is endless forms to be filled out, crowded tables, nowhere to sit, tired feet, grouchy professors, veiy long lines . . . MASS CONFUSION. .,.-«l  i ' ' %m ' Rat Week Rat Week is a tradition set up to help freshmen become better acquainted with other freshmen as well as upperclass- men. For some, it is frightening or even humiliating, but for most who take part in the activities, it is one of the most memorable experiences of their lifetime. • ' ■ , ' -S t ' I ' -i ' , ' ' - Classes The word classes means many things to many people. To some it means preparing an exhibit for an education course. To others it is listening to a lecture and frantically taking notes. To still others it means learning the techniques of life saving, pounding furiously on a typewriter or performing a complicated chemistry experiment. These and many other things make up our classes, the prime source of learning . . . our major goal. u Dances The dances at Alliens College are the most important social events of the year. Students work long days and nights decorating for the dances. During the hours of decorating; students become closer friends or make new friends through working side by side toward a common goal. Many times it seems impossible to finish on time, but through a team effort the goal is finally reached. Tired, hard working students rush back to the dorm and return shortly transfomied from sloppily dressed students with dirty faces into smartly dressed young men and women eager to enjoy a well earned even- ing of dancing. %l .. It is called many things — the dog, the big B and other things, but no matter what it is called, everyone is doing it. The adult world has labeled it the wildest, most savage dance ever, but even if it does bring out our ancestral traits, it is the dance that everyone can do — just merely relax and let yourself go. We have seen the twist, the slop, the continental and others, but this is THE dance of the year. 14 15 Dorm Life Though the resident students at Athens lepiesent only a small fraction of the total enrollment of Athens College, these students receive something that can only he found in a college dormitory. Dorm life is made up of many things — a casual card game, a quiet evening watching television, dreaded room checks, song fests around the piano, exercising in an effort to remove unde- sired pounds, and simple tasks such as that necessary cold cream massage. These and many other things make up our lives as part of the dormitory families. Although we may not realize it. dorm life plays almost as great a part in our education as classes. Very few students pass through Athens College without participating in physical education and intra- murals. Through this participation, students ' intellec- tual growth is balanced by physical and social growth. 19 Emotions 20 Basketball Basketball is not only the activity which brings a note of warmth and excitement into winter quarter. It creates the greatest period of school spirit present during the year. This year the spirit was increased by two additions to the cheering squad — the mascot cheerleader Leah Belcher and the Bear portrayed by James Hambv and Stick Smith. •a j- .. V -T- — — X ' Since the spring of 1963 we liave witnessed a dream slowly becoming a reality on our campus. This reality is the much needed and long planned gymnasium. The completion of this building will not only bring a much improved facil- ity for physical education classes, but it will also bring the varsity basketball games to the campus for the first time. The students are not merely watch- ing the progress of the building. One of the biggest projects ever undertaken by the student body is that of raising twenty thousand dollars to provide bleachers and scoreboards for the gym. m 25 All Athens College students have gazed in awe and wonder at the ante- bellum home on Beaty Street. There have been many stol ' ies told about the inhabitants of the house and incidents related to it. All the legends, however, have been killed this year because the college was able to purchase the house during the summer of 1963. The building is being converted into apart- ments, and students have wandered through its two stories and satisfied their curiosities. 26 The construction of the new gymnasium has been the most discussed and obsei-ved improvement on the campus, l)ut there were others during the year. Some of tliese such as the cleaning and repairing of the pipe organ in Mc- C andless went almost unnoticed on the campus. However, all the music students and some others realize and appreciate this effort. Our Lives Contain . Our lives contain the chatter and tensions of teas and receptions sharply contrasted against those rare moments of peace and quiet with a good book. 28 Our lives contain the excitement and spirit of being with a crowd at a basketball game, but there is also the time when we must escape from the crowd to be alone with our thoughts. Female members frantically go over their lines for the last time before going on stage. Costumes require at least two people for buttoning, lacing, and pinning. Necessary adjustments are made to make certam that a wig stays where it should. Director and star seem cjuite nlaxcd as they revie« their lines. 30 a The Rivals ?? The major dramatic production of the year was sponsored hy the Atliens College Players during the Fine Arts Festival. Dr. Sam L. Greenwood directed the play and also acted. The delightful comedy proved to be hilarious to all who saw it. The application of stage makeup seems to be a painful ordeal for this actor. After weeks of rehearsal and preparation, the play finally goes on stage. 31 Yea, Freshman Boys! The ' 63 freshman boys truly deserve tlie thanks of the upperclassmen. This group, fol- lowing the tradition of former classes, set out to build the biggest bonfire in the histoiy of A.C. — and they were successful. They did not stop with this accomplish- ment. In an effort to foster school spirit, eleven of the freshman boys decided to dribble a basketball from Athens to Florence — a fifty mile trip. Again they were successful, but the trip was not smooth all the way. A group of Florence students attempted to steal the ball, but our detennined freshmen de- fended it well and dribbled it to the Florence State campus. THE DRIBBLERS — Kneeling: Craig Bodner. Norment Baker. Jerry Greene. Harold Fuller. Standing: ' Serf Baxley, Nikita Archipov, Charley Meagher, Jim Powell, Larry Burch, Pete Tharp, Jimmy King. The Rumble — fists fly as the dribblers fight to retain possession of the ball. The Florence boys may have been bigger, but the Athens freshmen were faster. One of the injured dribblers receives first aid for a bruised face. 33 Lest We Forget His widow, wearing a suit stained with his hlood. slipping the wedding ring from her finger and placing it on his . . . tlie same widow keeping vigil over his hodv on the long journey and throughout the night at the Naval hospital . . . the torches lighting the White House drive as his body was brought home in darkness . . . his devoted staff removing his personal effects from his office . . . the last trip to the Capitol where he had sei ' ved his countiy so devotedly . . . the flag draped casket on a horse with inverted boots in i B stirrups . . . the muffled drums . . . the strains of Hail to the Chief and the Naval hymn . . . his bright-eyed little boy and his sandy-haired little girl clinging bewilderedly to their mother ' s strong hands . . . the heartbreaking eulogies delivered by Congressional leaders . . . his widow kneeling and kissing the flag which covered his casket and his little daugh- ter kneeling beside her and slipping her hand under the flag . . . the mournful, silent thou- sands climbing the hill to the Capitol to pay their last respects ... his two brothers who were always so close to him, flanking his widow on the walk behind the caisson from the Wliite House to the cathedral . . . dignitaries from sixty-nine nations also walking in trib- ute to him . . . the somber faced priest saying the funeral mass for a dear friend . . . Ave Maria sung by the same man who had sung it at his wedding ten years earlier . . . his lit- tle son, on his third birthday, standing on the cathedral steps and saluting his father ' s casket ... the long procession from the cathedral to Arlington Cemetery ... the fifty jets plus his personal plane dipping their wings over the open grave ... the twenty-one gun salute ... the haunting cry of taps ... his widow receiving the flag which had covered his casket and then bravely stepping foiTvard to light an eternal flame in memory of him . . . the firmly clasped hands of his widow and his brother as they slowly walked away from the final resting place of the man tliey both loved so dearly ... the man who gave so much to his country, but received so little in return — John Fitzgerald Kennedy. 35 Dedicated to Mrs, Velma Nugent 36 Listening to problems, chaperoning a dance, helping in the Snack Shack, driving a student to town or just talking with students — these are the things that have caused Mrs. Velma Nugent to l)e known to all Athens College students as Mama Nugent. ' Mama Nugent fills our need for a mother away from lionie — an advisor and a friend. For this we love her. In an effort to show our deep appreciation for the many things she has done for each of us, we, the Columns staff of 1961. proudlv dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Velma Nugent. nnC g T1 TT1 38 39 40 President — Dr. Virgil B.
