DEDICATION The COLUMNS Staff is proud to dedicate the 1962 COLUMNS to Mrs. Frances Murrell. We feel that you, Mrs. Murrell, have been a most gracious influence during our college years. Your in- terest, your guidance, and your help in all the phases of campus life have endeared you to us. It is with deepest thanks that we dedicate this an- nual to you, Mrs. Frances Murrell. Frances M. Chambers Editor, the COLUMNS ilk m ' % ' ' « tk « Ik ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY, AND _ STAFF «s V c -N V N Dear Students: Many of you, as I, came to Athens College almost three years ago. Together, we have witnessed many changes. Let us briefly reminisce about some major happenings during this period. These hav e come about because of a cooperative effort by a team made up of students, faculty, trustees, alumni, and friends of Athens College. Enrollment: Increased from 127 to 351 in the day school (from 26 to 125 in resident students). The fall quarter 1961 enrollment reached a total of 375 day and night students — the highest in the history of the school. Academic changes were: B. S. degree was added in Education; foreign language was added to degree requirements. Admission standards were raised and the pre-ministerial training program was revised. New programs were: Two years in Electronic and Instrument Technology, full-time counseling and guidance for all day students, two years of Basic En- gineering, and Fullbright Teacher Exchange through U. S. State Department. A full-time Director of Public Relations was added to the staff. A campus chapter of Circle K was organized. Building improvements included: Rearrangement of use of four buildings; spending $76,000 on repair and redecoration of buildings and campus improve- ments; addition of four acres of land to the campus by draining, filling, and grading lower portion of property; addition of three asphalt tennis courts; buying one acre additional land for locating a new girls ' dormitory; building and furnish- ing a new dormitory to house fifty girls at a cost of $200,000; paying for a new president ' s home through special gifts of friends of college. A total of $60,000 worth of laboratory equipment was added to the Science Hall and $11,000 worth of equipment to other departments. Space in the library was enlarged to accomo- date 3,500 more books. Air conditioning was installed in the library and dining hall. A Development Program has been approved by the Board of Trustees of the college. This program calls for enough buildings and faculty to accomodate 750 day and 250 night students by the fall of 1970. Thus, we plan for your Alma Mater to continue to serve the youth of the land as the need arises. Virgil McCain President II JAMES E. BATHURST Academic Dean 12 LAWRENCE F. EDWARDS Dean of Students E. Each one of you played a vital role in the editing of the 1962 COLUMNS. This book is a pictorial account of a year at your college - I hope that it adequately represents both you and Athens College, and that in later years it may be a little bond with old fun and friend- ships. Again, thank you all. Frances M.
