McCain, Jr., president of Athens College. We, the students of Athens College think you are a man of many talents and responsibilities each of which you fulfill in the highest, most admirable manner: a Christian gentleman, a scholar, and most of all a true friend. Your courage and vision have stood and will stand as a guiding force to our college. For your whole-hearted support and sincere personal in- terest in the student body, we wish to express our thanks by dedicating this, the 1961 COLUMNS to you, Dr. Virgil B. McCain, Jr. Ray Stonicher Editor-in-chief FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION ' ■ w Dear Students: I want to express to you my personal appreciation for the many fine things all of you are doing to help Athens become a better college. Your enthusiasm and friendliness create a joyful atmosphere in which to live and work. You are tops in my long list of young friends with whom I have been associated over the years. Athens College is on the move. Of the following, we are especially proud : 1. Our enrollment this year (491) is the highest on record. 2. Standards at Athens College have been made higher than Southern Association requirements in admissions, graduation, faculty, salaries, faculty degrees, and general administration. High standards mean a better education. 3. The first college level program in the State of Alabama for training Electronic and Instrument Technicians began here in September I960. 4. Money has been provided for a new girl ' s dormitory to be opened in September 1961. This will enable us to take 50 more students on campus next year. 5. Special gifts ($60,000) from friends of the college have enabled us to fully complete the furnishings of Waters Science Hall — now one of the best equipped science buildings in our state. You and our fine faculty have made these accomplishments possible. For this I shall be forever grateful. Sincerely, Virgil McCain Presidetit n ACADEMIC DEAN Dr. J. E. Bathurst DEAN OF STUDENTS L F. P R E S I D E N T JOHN CARTER, PRESIDENT To Dr. McCain, Dr. Bathurst, Dean Edwards, the faculty, and staff, I wish to express my deep appre- ciation and earnest thanks for your support in helping me make this the best year in our history. To my Cabinet, who has faithfully sup{x rted my endeavors, I wish to express my gratitude. To all students of Athens College, thank you for your cooperation. The Student Government Asstxiation of Ath ens College set as itself a goal when it first came into being. The goal: to create a friendly and hospitable atmosphere within the college, to provide an opportunity for social and recreational activity, to sponsor worthwhile projects, to hold high the torch of sch(x l spirit and to carry it down through the years. The S.G.A. has always held a grc t responsibility in representing the student body. But the Cabinet alone would fail without the full support and interest of all students. What we have accomplished we have not done alone; leaders and followers together have met the goal. It is my hope and my Cabinet ' s sincere hope that we, the S.G.A., have succeeded in fulfilling your wishes and suggestions for improvement on our campus. Again, thank you — and may you retain happy recollections of our year together at Athens College. 78 s . C G. A A. ATHENS COLLEGE SINGERS The Athens College Singers have several purposes, and all of these purposes contribute to the ultimate preparation of each of the Singers for post-graduate professions as teachers of music in the Public Schools, as Choral Conductors, as Church Music Directors, or as people who would have music merely as a hobby or avocation rather than as a vocation. The Choral Department hopes to increase its singers ' repertoire of great choral works of both the past and the present. It also strives to perform as a service organization .... a public relations unit, carrying the name and standards of Athens College over an area as far and as wide as possible. The projects of the Athens College Singers are varied, depending largely on the entertainment needs of the public. More specifically, the Choral Department plans to present a Spring Musical and to represent Athens College at the Choral Contest for Colleges held in Birmingham during the latter part of the academic year.
