HIS MESSAGE Atljcns Cullege ATHENS. ALABAMA OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT November 17, 1959 Dear Students: The program of Athens College attempts to combine a rich heritage of the past with a rocket future. You are the beneficiaries of both. I would like to bring to your attention several features about the college which are most significant. 1. Athens is the oldest college in continuous operation in the State of Alabama, founded in 1822. 2. Your school was the second chartered woman ' s college in the U.S. 3. Founders Hall, built in 1842, has been selected by the Advisory Committee of the Historic American Buildings Survey as possessing exceptional historic or architectural interest and as being worthy of the most careful preservation for the benefit of future generations that to this end a record of its present ap- pearance and condition has been made and deposited for permanent reference in the Library of Congress. 4. Half of the Athens College faculty has Doctor ' s degrees. ( National average is 40%.) 5. Our Counseling Service is one of the best in any college. 6. There are 42 students preparing for the ministry and other types of church service. Our men ministerial students are serving over 5,000 church members in this area. 7. There are 300 Ph.D ' s within a radius of 25 miles, many of whom are employed for late afternoon and evening classes in highly specialized courses. 8. A Development Program is now underway to accommodate 1,000 day students and 500 night students by 1970. May each of you, in return for the many opportunities offered here, resolve to help make this college a better place for your having been a student.
