To this end this book is given birth. ATHENS COLLEGE ATHENS ALABAMA Bertie Pope, Editor Ray Stdnichcr, Co-Editor Nell McCloud, Business Manager LIFE AT ATHENS COLLEGE AS SEEN . . . THROUGH THE COLUMNS THE BUILDINGS . . . FOUNDERS HALL Characteristic of Founders Hall is the four majestic white columns which greet those who come to the campus of Athens College. The administration offices, development program office, parlor, student lounge, prayer room and class rooms are located in this historic building. MCCANDLESS HALL Known as the Fine Arts building, McCandless Hall contains the auditorium, the art department, the music rooms, offices and class rooms. This building is a memorial to a former director of music. Miss Kate Leslie McCandless. BROWN HALL Brown Hall, formerly the President ' s Home, was recently reno- vated. It now serves as a dormitory for women students. Built in 1909, Brown Hall is a memorial to Miss Sarah Frances Brown, who, at one time, served on the Administrative Staff. SANDERS HALL Named in honor of W. T. Sanders, former president of tiie board of trustees, Sanders Hall houses the men students. It is an attractive dormitory with four lovely parlors. WATERS SCIENCE HALL The newest building on campus, the Waters Science Hall i s named for Mr. N. H. Waters, president of the Board of Trustees. It houses the various science laboratories in addition to offices and class- rtxjms. The building is one of the most mcxlcrnly equipped in the region. STUDENT CENTER The Student Center is located in the basement of Naylor Hall. A snack bar and recreational facilities including ping pong and a new Hi-Fi set purchased by the S.G.A. are provided. The S.G.A. of- fice is located here. The Student Center is a favorite spot for students and faculty to meet to exchange a joke while drinking coffee or a coke. DINING HALL The kitchen and dining room, located on the first floor of Houston Hall, are modern and spacious. The preparation of food is under the direction of a trained dietitian. The food is served from a well-equipped steam table. Guests are invited to join students and faculty for meals. LIBRARY Erected in 1946, the Athens College Library, a two-story brick building, adjoins Founders Hall. The book collection now totals about 20,000 volumes with annual additions averaging 2,000. Over 400 per- iodicals are received through purchase and gift subscription. The li- brary contains the best source materials in each area of study of the liberal arts program. During 1955-56 definite steps were taken toward building a collection of local historical interest, including letters, manuscripts, and other material. 10 HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION BUILDING Erected in 1918 through the efforts of students and the trustees, this building has a gymnasium which is used for the physical education classes and a swimming pool. The office of the Director of Physical Education is located in this building. The Annex contains a large classroom in addition to an equipment storage room and the office of the Athletic Coach. n BOARD OF TRUSTEB Seated: Mr. A. C. Michaels, Dr. J. S. Christian, Dr. Virgil McCain, Mr. N. H. Waters, Sr., Dr. R. E. Kimbrough, Rev. O. S. Gamble, Dr. R. B. Lavender. Standing: Mr. J. Homer Crim, Mr. Sim S. Wiibanks, Rev. E. L. McFee, Rev. John C. Glenn, Mr. R. Carl Martin, Rev. Charles O. Moore, Dean James E. Bathurst, Mr. P. W. Hendricks. 12 DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Dr. John C. Glenn, Director; Mrs. C. E. McLain, Secretary. Today nearly every college employs one or more persons working in development. Where this is not so, you will almost always find the President doing this job himself. At Athens College the Director of Development works with the President and the Board of Trustees on the long-range as well as the more immediate plans for the College. Anything that has to do with the present and future development of Athens College is of interest to this group. 13 DEDICATION MISS ANGELINE NAZARETIAN 14 =4tLn CotL ATHENS, ALABAMA February 16, I960 Dear Miss Nazaretian; Congratulations! The Columns Staff wishes to honor you by dedicating the 1 959-60 edition of the annual to you. This is our means of saying thank you for the excellent way in which you have led the annual staff as faculty advisor. Without your constant faith in us and the willingness on your part to do all you could, this yearbook could never have been successful. We, the staff, represent Athens College in giving thanks to you for your interest in the college as a whole, thereby, sharing with each student in their concerns. Each organization that you have guided takes pride in your leadership in help ing to develop better organizations, activities and school spirit. You have worked faithfully in the Health and Physical Education Department in order to keep its standards fully accredited. You have instructed well; may we follow equally as well. Your influence will long be remembered on this college campus. As one student of the college has said — There are five columns, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Angeline Nazaretian. May this dedication serve as a means of stamping your name indelibly on the pages of history of Athens College. Most Sincerely - _. Bettie Pope FJitiir 15 ACUITY AND i: i ADMINISTRATION THE PRESIDENT . 18 DR. VIRGIL McCain, JR. HIS MESSAGE Atljcns Cullege ATHENS. ALABAMA OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT November 17, 1959 Dear Students: The program of Athens College attempts to combine a rich heritage of the past with a rocket future. You are the beneficiaries of both. I would like to bring to your attention several features about the college which are most significant. 1. Athens is the oldest college in continuous operation in the State of Alabama, founded in 1822. 2. Your school was the second chartered woman ' s college in the U.S. 3. Founders Hall, built in 1842, has been selected by the Advisory Committee of the Historic American Buildings Survey as possessing exceptional historic or architectural interest and as being worthy of the most careful preservation for the benefit of future generations that to this end a record of its present ap- pearance and condition has been made and deposited for permanent reference in the Library of Congress. 4. Half of the Athens College faculty has Doctor ' s degrees. ( National average is 40%.) 5. Our Counseling Service is one of the best in any college. 6. There are 42 students preparing for the ministry and other types of church service. Our men ministerial students are serving over 5,000 church members in this area. 7. There are 300 Ph.D ' s within a radius of 25 miles, many of whom are employed for late afternoon and evening classes in highly specialized courses. 8. A Development Program is now underway to accommodate 1,000 day students and 500 night students by 1970. May each of you, in return for the many opportunities offered here, resolve to help make this college a better place for your having been a student. Our purposes are many; and we hope our accomplishments will be lasting. It has been the primary responsibility of the S. G. A. to create a friendly atmosphere, to provide opportunities for both social and recreational activity, to promote school spirit, and sponsor worthwhile projects which would benefit not only the students, but all Athens College. Our accomplishments have been your accom- plishments. Without your support and interest, our successes would have been failures. The Cabinet of your Student Government Association has worked diligently to carry out your wishes, suggestions and ideas. To them, I am most grateful. I personally appreciate the keen interest, the cooperative spirit, and the earnest support which I have received this year while serving as your president. To Dr. Mc Cain; Dr. Bathurst; Dean Edwards, our faculty advisor; and the faculty and staff, I express my sincerest thanks. It is my hope that in the future students at Athens College will continue to appreciate and enjoy the truly Christian spirit as it reigns over our college campus. Another page has been added to the history of Athens College and through this edition of The COLUMNS, I hope you will find a pictorial reminder of its activities and organizations. Years from now when you occasionally thumb through this annual, may the memories which come to your mind bring smiles because for you this year has been a rewarding experience. We, the staff, have endeavored to overcome obstacles to produce a book that you will be proud to call your own. We have accepted the challenge that is involved in producing a yearbook. This challenge calls for many hours of work and to the staff I wish to say thanks for a job well done. Many changes have been made in the organiza- tion of the annual which we hope will be beneficial to future staffs. We are adventurers, in a sense, traveling into the unknown. I wish to say thanks to all the people who have made this annual possible. To Dr. Bathurst who co-operated so willingly in helping to work out problems, to Miss Nazare- tian for her guidance as faculty advisor, to all the faculty and staff for their contribu- tions, to Dan Glenn of Florence who did an excellent job with the photography, to Our supporters who made this annual possible through their advertisements, to every- one who contributed to its success and especially to Dr. McCain who insists that college is a formal occasion to which one must wear shoes. Our thanks to him for the fine leadership he provides as president of Athens College. It has been a valuable experience for me to serve as editor. I wish to thank you for the opportunity, and with pride I present to you, this your annual, the 1959-60 The COLUMNS.
