C. POWERS Assistants ARDYCE HOBBS ANITA BROADWAY EUGENE WILCOX DEAN McMINN Advisor MR. ROBERT COWAN I hope that you will find this edition of The Columns a pictorial re- minder which faithfully records Athens College, its organizatons, and its ideals. It is the sincere wish of the 1958 Columns staff that your ap- preciation and enjoyment of this book will increase with the passing of time. We have endeavored to overcome obstacles which could have blocked the successful production of this yearbook. We have come to recognize the fact that achievement is born of obstacles met and defeated. To Mr. Robert Cowan, our advisor, and to the many people who have given of their talents and of their support, we say thanks. Your co-op- eration has made this book possible. Memories are made by gossamer threads which connect us to our past. Your experiences, your friends, and even a part of you are all here lest you forget. GRADY HATCHETT HISTORY OF ATHENS COLLEGE In 1822, five years after the incorporation of Athens, three years after the admission of Alabama into the Union, the citizens of Athens bought five acres of land, erected a building, and established the institution, Athens Female Academy. Twenty years later the people of Athens raised a ten thousand dollar endov ment and expanded the Academy into a four year college. In January 1843, the legislature of Alabama granted a charter in- corporating the Athens Female Institute of the Tennessee Annual Con- ference of the Methodist Church. The institution became co-educational in 1931, and subsequently the name was changed to Athens College. One of the oldest institutions in the South, Athens College has continued its program uninterruptedly through epidemics, depressions, and wars. Notably did the College continue its classes while Athens was under seige from the Federal troops during the Civil War. From the second floor windows of historic Founders Hall, the students were able to watch the Battle for Athens in progress. Though the town was under Union oc cupation, the College property sustained no damages and the student life continued unmo- lested. Athens College has had twenty presidents since its founding. Men and women of moral stature and wisdom have guided it from the be- ginning. As an institution of the church, she has sent missionaries into mission fields around the world. Many of her graduates are leaders in religion, education, and business. DEDICATION DEDICATION TO THE MEMORY OF THOMAS SIMMONS In our lives there may be a million or so faces, making their brief and fading impression on our minds. A few of them become more than just faces. They become real people we can cling to. In short, they become friends. Tom was such a person. He came into peoples ' lives with a smile, and his smiling spirit made them smile. He had a bold and tenacious out- look on life, which he gave freely to anyone who would reach out to accept it. This outlook offered hope and promise for the future, plus a view of man ' s potentialities. His ability to share his outlook with others and make them aware of their own potentialities was Tom ' s unique talent. The memory of Tom will remain fresh as long as we who knew him live, for he gave us more than just his smile and his radiant personality. He gave us himself. Tom, you were our friend; but, what is more, you were our example in Christian living. No man, no matter what heights he achieves, can do more than this. Your youth, your memory, and your pattern for living will serve us all our lives. Your life and what you stood for have guided us as we prepared this book. It is with humb le gratitude that we offer you our poor effort and dedicate it to your memory. il III! in I 1 iiii t ! m I 1 III 111 .m ■t FOUNDERS HALL Founders Hall, famous for its beautiful columns, was built in 1842. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY THE PRESIDENT PERRY B. JAMES II PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Athens College has its roots firmly planted in the past and exists in the present and future. Across the stream of history for a hundred and thirty-six years students have been gathering upon this campus. They have seen many changes in the cultural pat- tern of our civilization and will see many more as the forces of life move on. Just as the college of today grew out of the planning of yesterday, so the College of tomorrow must grow out of our planning of today. We propose as quickly as possible to expand our curriculum and plant facilities to meet modern needs that are pressing in upon us. Our goal must be a larger student body, added new buildings and the enrichment of our program. The North Alabama of the future will require an institution of higher learning with an extended program in science, humanities, and the fine arts. To this end we carry our dreams, love and devotion for Athens College. DR. E. C. PAUSTIAN ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATOR F. Alford FRANK ALFORD Physical Education JOYCE ALFORD _. Music R. N. Powers, President Student Government Association The Student Government Association is an organization in which the whole student body participates. This organization has endeavored to promote harmony and good- will among the students and to provide wholesome social and recreational opportuni- ties for all. Through this organization students govern themselves, and take part in the administering of student affairs. Both progress and mistakes have been made this year, but we feel that the mistakes will be profitable to the future officers of the Student Government. We are truly grateful to all of you who have contributed and assisted in any way to the work of the Cabinet. The progress made would have been impossible without your co-operation. Especially to Mr. Whiddon and Mr. Bailey do we offer our grateful thanks. In their relationships to the student body and the Cabinet they have given, unreservedly, of their time and energy for the benefit of the students. In behalf of the Cabinet we are indeed grateful for the privilege and opportunity of serving you and contributing what we could to the Student Body and progress of Athens College. R. C. ATHENS COLLEGE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Ten years ago there were few development administrators in the field of higher education. Today, nearly every college employs one or more persons working in development. Where this is not so, you will almost always find the president doing this job him- self. Inasmuch as the professional development officer is still a new phenomenon, you may be interested in learning something about his functions. In most colleges he is solely and directly responsible to the president and, through him, to the Board of Trustees. Frequently, those in the college who work with public relations, publicity, publications, recruitment, and alumni affairs find their activities closely allied with those carried on in the development office. At Athens, the director of development works with the presi- dent, and a development committee, to set down in as definite form as possible the long-range as well as the more immediate plans for the college. Anything that has to do with the present and future development of the college is of interest to this group. Some of these things are: historical background and prestige; alumni and ex-students; present students; future students; mem- bers of the administration and staff; the cultural and spiritual ambient; the academic as well as the extracurricular picture; effi- cient use of teaching facilities; financial aspects of the institution; money received from all contributions, gifts from foundations, corporations, and individuals; the condition of the campus and the status of the physical plant; plans for improving efficiency, and for plant improvement and expansion. This is but a partial list of what must be encompassed in the over-all view. Too often, the word development is taken to mean only fund raising. Certainly more money must be raised for increas- ing salaries, enlarging the faculty, and for services and buildings. These and other things are necessary if Athens College is to con- tinue to hold a place of leadership in higher education. But im- portant as fund raising may be, development means much more than that. ADVERTISERS c reating new frontiers in fibers Industry and education are working hand !n hand to meet the promising new challenges created by the growing Tennessee Valley area. The close ties between the Chemstrand Cor- poration and Athens College reflects this team- work. Higher educational standards for which Athens is ever striving means more qualified scientists to help Chemstrand in its search to create new ease of living through chemical textile fibers. niK CHEMSTRAND corporatiox SEWELL ' S BARBER BEAUTY SHOP MILLER BRO.
