Edgar Moore arrived on the campus he has won our deep admiration for his devotion to student welfare. A genuine understanding and appreciation of people permeates his personal as well as his educational philosophy. He is never too busy to pause in the midst of his work at that notoriously untidy desk of his to share in our interests and problems and aspirations. A sensitivity for the meaning of liberal arts education, a devotion to his academic standards, a practicing belief in democratic processes, and an innate personal integrity — these are the principles that guide his actions and invoke our confidence. We affectionately dedicate this book to The Dean. MADISON L MARSHALL ATHENS COLLEGE 1954-1956 He graced our campus with the dignity of a quiet smile; and in the classroom he was our preceptor and our ideal. S, NORTON k Wtf THE PRESIDENT Perry B. James II PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE From the vantage point of history we see Athens College in action across the stream of one hundred thirty-five years. Few schools in the South have lived so long on the same campus. We are proud of the achievements of our trustees, faculty, alumni and students. But we must not stop here. We must look ahead to a more glorious future in which we will be privileged to bear high the torch of learning. The paths ahead are bright for the fulfillment of our mutual dream; the completion of our new N. H. Waters Science Hall; the enlargement of our student body; and, the enrichment of our program. Together we can carry our idea and ideal to reality for a greater Athens College born out of shared de otion and enduring love for our Alma Mater. THE DEAN OF THE COLLEGE R. I feel that progress has been made but at the same time must admit that mistakes have been made. We hope that future officers will profit from these mistakes. To all who have contributed and assisted in any way to the work of the Cabinet we are truly grateful. Without the cooperation received from you it would have been impossible to have made the progress thus made. Especially to Dr. Moore, Mr. Leidig, and Miss Gray do we offer our grateful thanks. In their relationships to the Student Body and the Cabinet they have given, unreservedly, of their time and energy for the benefit of the students. In behalf of the Cabinet we are indeed grateful for the privilege and opportunity of serving you and contributing what we could for the progress of Athens College. Throughout the entire season mjuries were a determining factor and, consequently, made it impossible for the Bears to approach in full strength the roughest schedule in Athens College histor) ' . Improper gym facilities also greatly influenced the four-win and eighteen lost record which the home quintet registered this season. Seasonal highlights glowed most brilliantly with victories over strong Jacksonville State Teachers, 96-78, Florence State, 71-70, St. Bernard of Cullman, 79-71, and power- ful Howard College of Birmingham, 73-72. The Bears scoring crusade was led by forward R. C. Powers, a Junior, with a total of 225 points for an average of 12.2 points during 21 games. Ace rebounder Jake Bailey had a 11.0 point average and James Mo Robbins, owned a 10.6 point average to round out the Athens scoring attack. R. C. POWERS Leading Scorer CLIFF HOLLADAY Captain VARSITY In its first year of Collegiate competition during the 1956 season, the Athens College tennis team compiled a 4-3 record. Victories over Lambuth Col- lege, Huntingdon College, and two wins over Martin College pulled the netters above the .500 mark. TENNIS John Childress, James Robbins, and Nofflet Williams, returning lettermen from last year ' s tennis team, are expected to pace the Athens netters during the 1957 season. A l4-game schedule awaits the racket men when they take to the courts.
