The Columns 19i6 Published by THE ANNUAL STAFF OF ATHENS COLLEGE Foreword . . . .With the flow of inexorable time, those things we cherish are destined to become but dusty memories . We ore together for only a fleet- ing moment, then the diverse ways of destiny will send us on, each to his fate, each in his way. The trails in life we take will lead us farther and farther apart. The memories we will hold, fresh when the year is over, will grow dimmer and dimmer as the years in the future swiftly become the present, and the present become the past . Because of this acute realization, our motive in making this book is to capture a part of this magic moment together, so that in the years to come, even though, we cannot cross the barrier physically, we can, in memory, return to Athens College and relive in part, the beautiful, care- free times so wonderfully spent together Founders Hall Founders Hall, famous for itsbeautiful columns, wasbuilt in 1842. By an act- of Congress, Founders Hall is to be preserved as one of the finest examples of Southern Architecture. Mc (landless Hall ■• McCandles Hall contains Laboratories, Art rooms, Offices, and an Auditorium. New classrooms have recently been constructed on the third floor. BeauHFul Sanders Hall was constructed in 1924 as a dormitory for girls. t was named in honor of W. T. Sanders, a true friend of Athens College. Brown Hall The Flag Pole (left) and a corner of Brown Hall (right) Gymnasium in rear. Dedication DR. EMORY C. UNNEWEHR We are ever too reluctant to express acknowledgment and appreciation for those people who render us great services in a modest and unassuming manner. We, of Athens College, owe much to such a man. Dr. E.C. Unnewehr, who, by his greatability as a scientist and teacher, his high ideals, and his unselfish service to the Col lege and Community, has aided invaluably in the growth of Athens College. By his very capable efforts and his unsurpassed character. Dr. Unnewehr has won a permanent place in the hearts of those associated with him. To you. Dr. Unnewehr, we dedicate this book, in the hope that it will convey some of our tardy appreciation for your efforts in our behalf. The Editor Speaks... It has been my honorand privilege to edit The Columns during 1956, without a doubt, the best year that Athens Col lege has ever seen . It seems to me that Athens College has entered a new era. The year 1955-56 has been the year beyond the crisis. The college has passed the point of danger in its life. We have watched with pride and admiration the undefeatable spirit of Athens College asserting itself. In the long-awaited accreditation of the college, we have seen the hopes and dreams and efforts of many people become a dynamic reality. Athens Col lege is possessed of a long and glorious past but lam singu- larly convinced that its future will be far more glorious and much, much longer . ' ' ■- From I he S (i A 19.16 Athens College is a unique insHtution in many ways, and nowhere is this fact more apparent than in the distribution of its student body. The doy and night Classes actually constitute two schools. Each has its own peculiar problems, and each demands fair and equal consideration from the faculty, administration and stu- dent government. Each deserves that consideration. But limited facilitiesand finances sometimes prescribe actions that under different circumstances would not be necessary or desirable. This is the dilemma that faced the Student Government Association this year, and that problem will continue to exist as long as the present distribution prevails. One government must govern two Colleges . What we have done (and are doing) to equalize the social opportunities between the two groups is a matter which we hope speaks for itself. We have certainly made mistakes, but we have also made progress. In the course of time, someone may introduce the ideal program. We trust that our small work will have made the solution easier to find. For all the assistence and encouragement given to the Cabinet throughout this past year, I offer the sincerest appreciation. Without student interest, the S.G.A. becomes a meaningless term. Especially to Dean Moore, Dean Leidig and Dr. Paus- tain goes our grateful thanks. The student body has in them sincere and constant friends. By this means the officers and members of the Cabinet express their gratitude for having been given the opportunity to promote in o small way the progress of Athens College. Sigma Tau Delta ktional English Fraternity Kappa Zeta Chapter Another sign of the accelerated progress! veness that Athens College is currently experiencing was the recent organization of a new college fraternity. The Kappa Zeta Chapter of The Sigma Tau Delta National English Fraternity. Organized specifically for English students, the Fraternity provides an outlet for individual creative writing and gives the student an opportunity to become acquainted with the work of English students all over the United States. Certain requirements and standards must be met by the students before they can enter the fraternity . Among these are high scholastic rating, and a manifested interest in English or closely allied fields. The Fraternity was begun by Dr. Herbert L. Hughes, Professor of English at Athens College . Dr. Hughes has had much experience in this particular phase of Col lege English . He began several chapters of this fraternity in colleges he was associated with before coming to Athens Col lege . 58 The Colnnins Staff George Crutchfield Faculty Advisor STAFF Editor Harold Raley Business Manager Diane Davis Picture Editor Jeanette Smith Advertising Manager ....
