Buchanan This was the first year that Athens College has produced a full-scheduled football team. Playing most of their ten games with much larger schools, the Golden Bears built quite a reputation for themselves on the gridiron. Coach E. M. Smith did a splendid job in getting the most out of his material. We are confident that Coach Smith will turn out winning teams for us in the future. J. R. Russell and W. B. Buchanan also are to be congratulated. Through their aid and influence our Athletic Association was made to function well. [VUl: The 1948 baseball team at Athens College was one of the best that has been developed at our century-old institution. Coach Lloyd Stone did a wonderful job and his knowledge of base- ball that he passed on to the boys paid off in games won. Athens College finished one-half game short of first place in the Mississippi Valley Conference. In the conference tournament Athens was de- feated by Bethel, 3 to 2. Denny Rice, ace Bear pitcher, was chosen on the All-Conference team. During the season he- won eight games while losing only one. Lump- kin and Morris led the team in hitting with .479 and .424 respectively.
