The first team had its inception in much the same way the present team was assembled, with some notable exceptions: The boys attending the college wanted to play football, which most of them had participated in while in high school, and, with the encouragement of a number of local enthusiasts of tie sport, a team was outfitted by the college. The late Frank H. Armstrong and Ewin Grisham coached the 1930 eleven which, like the present team, was composed almost wholly of Athens boys. As recalled by some of the members of that team, Athens College met six opponents —Tupelo Military Academy, Branham Hughes Military Academy, Anniston Military Institute, Columbia Military Academy, Birmingham-Southern freshmen and St. Bernard College. The Athenians won their contests with BHMA (18-0) AMI (6-0) and St. Bernard, but were losers to Tupelo (0-7), CMA (6-13) and Birmingham-Southern ( 0-19 ) . After that abbreviated season, football languished at Athens College until this fall, when a group of a dozen or more Athens businessmen and farmers, cognizant of the wishes of the now-much-larger group of boys attending Athens College to engage in intercollegiate competition, took the ball themselves. It was a matter of a few days for these local businessmen to raise the guaran- tee necessary to provide practice togs and uniforms for the squad, and to engage Robert Witt, former Mississippi Southern end, as coach. Others of the sponsoring group got busy arranging games, the response at the box office at the first game on Nov. S being such as to vindicate their belief that the community would strongly support intercollegiate football. Your attendance here tonight and for the remaining games on the schedule will go far towards determining whether you will again have the privilege of seeing this same team on the gridiron next fall. . 64 ATHENS COLLEGE SQUAD No. Name Pos. Coach Llovd Stone ' s Golden Bears are in the midst of a truly rugged schedule and are improving with every game. Captained this year bv Don Densmore, the Golden Bears are greatly handicapped by their lack of height but make up for this disadvantage with their sharp-shooting. RECORD Won 20 Lost 8 The Athens College Softball team entered in the Limestone County Softball Association and finished third in a very fast league. The team was a menace to the top teams all summer and would have fared better if exams and trips home had not interfered. Billy Nelson, college pitcher, had the second best won-lost record in the league. The team was the best hitting team in the league, but was also high in the error standing. A league rule stated that if a team were ahead ten runs after five innings of play, the game was called. Athens College won more five-inning games than any other team. Also, they were the only team in the league that wasn ' t beaten in a five-inning contest. This year the College will be back in the league and the increase in enroll- ment should enable us to field even a better team than we had last summer. 73 Norene Lower?
